I will try and clear up some incorrect information. Ole Miss still plays Dixie (often and with multi versions). We have Dixie Fanfare (our bands intro song), two different first down Dixie cheers, regular Dixie (played after scores or turnovers, and when the band first enters the stadium) and our new pregame song which still has a slow version of Dixie in it. What we stopped playing was "from Dixie with Love" because our fans would chant "the south shall rise again" during the battle hymn section. Word on the street is that it will make a slow comeback as early as this year in the grove and next year back on the field. The school wants a new chant to takes its place before its heard on tv again. Just YouTube ole miss band for any of these versions. Almost all of them can be heard at the Grove pep rally before the game as well.

No offense to the Magnolia State (it's a fine place with nice folks), but I'm very happy that Texas has more to be proud of in our history than coming in second place in a civil war.

You've got real nerve tbirdspur. I have bent over backwards for you and everyone else who has attacked me. I have treated you with respect throughout this discussion. It is apparent that you lack real understanding of this issue and are merely speaking emotionally.

Spare me the sob story. You've got real nerve insinuating that I should not be outraged at the cavalier attitude you exhibit toward a system and a society that destroyed my race so thoroughly that I couldn't accurately trace my lineage back past the 1800s if I wanted to. I have answered all of your condescending, holier than thou posts in kind, and if you cannot accept that I do not believe your interpretation of the events that led up to the war between the states as valid, then we'll have to agree to disagree.

But don't act like you're doing me this monumental favor by responding to my posts. Get over yourself.

Yes, the Alamo is kind of the same thing. But San Jacinto isn't.

O.K.

Getting off the the mucical topic of this thread...

Ever wonder WHY there are more Confederate statuary and monuments on t.u.'s Austin campus than in College Station ?

Marathon beat me to it. The massacres at the Alamo and at Goliad were rally points.

To end this thread, let me just say: I don't care if y'all play Dixie, Bonnie Blue Flag, Yellow Rose of Texas or Baby Got Back.

You will never, ever surpass this. And I mean evah!

Welcome to the SEC.

And, most importantly...Geaux Tigers!!!!

We don't need lyrics. Or ranting about whomever.

The amazing music and presentation speak for themselves.

GEAUX TIGERS!

Good God. I need to go to sleep.

But I will say this...

Speaking as a Daughter of the Confederacy, descendant of Confederate soldiers and officers - but not slaveholders or KKK members - just stop this stupid argument. Now! No one - and I mean, NO ONE - will win.

The War is Over. It's ridiculous. This is 2012. Yes, it was a horrible thing. It was our holocaust. Ugly. Horrible. But it happened, and we can't resolve this on a college football thread.

It started off with y'alls band playing Dixie. Okay. That said, don't worry about playing Dixie or don't worry about how the Aggie Band looks to everyone else. Y'all are taking this WAY too seriously.

It's college sports. No one cares about the cultural presentations. We just play ball.

Just present us with a football team whose "arse" we can kick, and we will be happy.

'night.

Just play Big Bopper's "White Lightening" and call it a day. He is from Texas and a good chunk of the SEC can relate to moonshine. No Civil War historical revision by blinded Confederates, nobody gets insulted...just good clean fun.

I don't even like being forced to pay taxes. The idea of being owned completely and utterly is disgusting to me, should be repulsive to any freedom loving American. And this Vile institution as old as mankind was ended peacefully everywhere but in the United States. War was unnecessary, and over the top. As was the following military occupation for 12 years where freed slaves were used as pawns in elections poisoned race relations for the next..... Still poisoned.

It's not that slavery would have ended on its own. It's that it should have been done peacefully through legal/ constitutional channels. Instead the federal government chose to impose its will by military force against their own people. And broke every constitutional principle there was, And have been doing so ever since.

And I don't know where this Texas ain't southern sentiment came from.

It seems that a valid argument can be easily made that distinguishes Texas from the other former Confederate states, much the same way (but for different reasons) that Florida is.

Florida isn't regarded as the true south because most of the people in Florida are from the north (either NE or Mid West). It's a transient state full of yanks, Latinos, and some necks. It's very regionalized, and there are definitely some parts that are just as southern as Deep Miss/Bama/Georgia.

Texas is often regarded as not the true south because of its geography (being the farthest detached from the rest, as well as its image of being "South West". For most who have not been there, they see it as rugged cowboy desert country (which parts are) through and through. They don't realize that from East Texas to the Hill Country, and from the Red to Rio Grande, that is very southern. Even the parts that are more Western are still very southern.

For Texas it's an issue of ignorance; for Florida it's largely factual.

Texas is separated from the "Deep South" by its distinct:

History
Demographics (smaller black population; larger Latino population)
Religion (Texas is more Catholic and less Protestant)
Economy
Victimization during the Civil War (Texas was largely spared during the conflict and was the first to rebound after surrender)

There are a myriad of other factors as well.

Texas has unique culture all it's own but it also has 3 distinctive cultural regions the size of other smaller states where that distinctive Texas flavor blends with that of larger US cultural reasons.

North Texas and the Pan Handle are a mix of Texas and the larger Midwest/Great Plains culture. Other than it's size, Dallas is not so much different from OKC, KC and Omaha. But to counterbalance Dallas, you have Fort Worth that is very Texas.

East Texas and the Gulf Coast are much culturally like the Old South. But like DFW, Houston and other cities are a blend of that Old South culture with the unique Texas culture.

South and West Texas are very much culturally aligned with the American Southwest. A city like San Antonio shows the blend of Mexico and Texas together to create Tejano culture.

Texas is more Catholic than LA?

Actually, Texas and Louisiana are both 28% Catholic. Louisiana, for obvious (Frenchy) reasons, is the outlier in the Deep South.

So somehow the Bonnie Blue Flag with the lyrics

We are a band of brothers and native to the soil,
Fighting for the property we gained by honest toil;

which strongly boasts that we are willing to fight to keep slavery is better than Dixie. Isn't any song that suggests that A&M longs for the good ole days of slavery and denying African Americans of their rights and refering to them as "as an inferior and dependent race" as the Declaration of Causes does make the school seem racist? This whole discussion of trying to identify with the Confederacy so A&M can fit in with the SEC seems silly at best and scary at worst IMHO.

Atlanta should have a statue of Sherman, Vicksburg should have a statue of Grant, and public schools in Texas shouldn't be named after the traitors that are Jeff Davis and Robert E. Lee. Proud to be a Texan and proud to be an American.
