I was talking to this guy today and he offered me quite an interesting idea...and it had to deal with people wearing the Aggie Ring on the left hand. He basically stated the idea of a secret society of Aggies that show their membership to this secret organization by wearing the ring on the left hand.
-He also said that he thinks Earl Rudder is either a member or started the organization...supposedely Rudder's statue shows him with his ring on his left hand.

a few reasons that I didn't totally blow this idea off...

1) I have never heard of an Aggie Ring being worn on the left hand...so if there is a reason please let me know so I can inform this guy.

2) His friend was very hesitant when asked about why he wore his ring on his left...he said that he had it there so girls could see he's not married.

3) Another guy's grandfather won't tell him why he wears his ring on his left even though he has asked repeatedly about it.

4) He said it's rare to see a ring on the left hand and it seems that only "high ranking" Aggies do it.

Even if this guy is 100000% wrong, he did a great job at telling a convincing and enjoyable story.

so...

Has anyone ever noticed this? and of so, what does it mean?

I've seen a few mostly older guys do it. I assumed it was in place of a wedding ring, which traditionally goes on the left ring finger.

The original 1894 ring was to be worn on the middle finger of either hand. I found this out during Aggie Ring research in Cushing Library.

While going through old files and pictures I also found various black and white pictures of old Ags wearing their rings on the left hand. These weren't "high-ranking" Aggies, but rather normal cadets.

I've heard of 'secret societies' wearing their rings on their left hands, but I haven't researched that, nor do I really plan to.

I do know that there are certain current students who wear their ring on their left hands because they know the rumors about doing so and they like to mess with people. Other than that, I don't know anything about it.

Evidently back in the day, a lot of Ags wore their ring on their left hand. I talked to Rudder's wife and she told me that she was glad that Ags have taken to wearing their rings on their right hand b/c Ags would shake her hand and clasp her hand with their left hand and the ring would hurt her hand when it hit it.

It would be cool if we had a secret society on campus like Skull & Bones.

Oh theres a fairly well documented secret society at A&M, forget the name of it. I had never heard of the ring on the left hand however or if its related to that group.

I've heard the rumor of the secret society. I've also heard that WAG haters in the corps would wear it on their left hand...

And while those may or may not be true, honestly some people just wear their ring on their left hand.

I knew a girl who was left handed so she wore it on her left hand. Another guy who was in the band that wore it on his left hand because his grandfather and his father wore their rings on their left hand.

Personally, it is because I'm right handed. My ring was getting caught in things cause I don't think before you reaching for things. The left hand is less dominate, so a really large ring doesn't get caught or dinged. That's why I wear mine on my left hand.

There are tons of reasons why people wear their Aggie ring on the left hand. If you look at statues on campus, you will see the Aggie ring different fingers.

Im in Germany, wife is a German. We wear our wedding rings on the right hand (which was common in the entire world until the 1800s or so)(you can guess, because you wiped your backside with your left hand, so that was the unclean one). Anyhow .. point being, since my wedding ring is on my right hand and my wife comes first, here in Germany my Aggie ring is on my left hand. When I go to the US .. I switch .. but not because my Aggie ring should go on the right hand, but rather .. people look for a wedding ring on the left hand in the US.

I knew a guy who was in the secret society. (Dont tell you girlfriend anything, girls talk!)and it is true they do wear there ring on their left hand. I also have heard of old Ags in general wearing their ring on their left hand. So just because someone is wearing it on their left hand does not mean they are in the secret society, but they could be. The owner of my firm wears it on his left hand along with his wedding ring. He just said he always liked it better on his left hand.

Knew an old Ag who wore his on his left hand to keep his loose wedding ring from slipping off.

The Aggie Folklore folks claim there is a secret society, but I guess I was never important enough to know about it. Wasn't even a rumor of one back in my day.

id heard it from a BQ buddy. He even said the name of the society, but i can't recall it now...

according to him, the general idea of the ring on the left hand was that you were "married to the corps"

I used to wear my Aggie ring on my left hand, but then I left the secret society and moved it to my right hand. Oh, that event corresponded to getting married and putting a wedding ring on my left hand.

I've had my Ring for 30+ yrs. Always worn it on my left hand, for mostly personal reasons. I'm right-handed, and I am more comfortable writing with my ring on my left hand. I also wear a thin wedding band on my left hand along with my Ring... I told my wife that she was closer to my heart than A&M... she said "but not by much"... I said, "Well....."

I recently had a friend of the family, Class of '07 ask me about this secret society thing. I've been out of A&M over 30 years, and I've never heard of the left-hand ring thing being symbolic of membership in some secret society. Never heard of it when I was a student, either. I've never had someone assume I was a member of a group because of which hand I wear my Ring on. In my experience, this rumor is a fairly recent occurrence. I can only tell you that, in 30+ years, my Ring is on my left hand purely out of personal preference, and for no other reason.
