you got a really tough year with the heat. Buddy of mine went out way too fast and ended up dropping at mile 77. He still averaged like 12 min miles, even with a death march toward the end before dropping (~19 min miles for the last 12 miles), so that gives you an idea of how quick he went out.

Give yourself a lot of credit for pushing through those conditions.

I will say this is the best I've felt after a 100. Hbc even said I seem to be getting a little better at this.

I told a guy this was my third 100 and they were all this year and he said I was insane.

you've now finished as many hundreds as I have, and my first was in 2013. I like the 100K distance a bit more than the 100 miler though, so i've done a lot of those.

The 100k at javelina would be fun because you wouldn't be in the heat for a second day, but it's not a WSER qualifier. I beat my 100k time that I got at Bandera, and probably would have pushed a little harder if I were finishing after 3 loops. I'm getting a lot better at being able to be more consistent through the end of the race. I walked the entire second lap at Bandera and the last 30 miles at my 1st 100 and since then, I've been able to run at the end.

I'm going to figure out how to get a 24 hour finish. I don't know when but I'm going to get it.

flatter, non-technical course obviously helps, but you already know and have done that.

dialing nutrition and hydration and minimizing stoppage at aid stations. That said, there are two BIG components of sub 24 or just running 100s faster:

1) in your "off season" training, work on speed. you need to increase your base speed. That will translate to faster running overall. If you're pace decreases even 20 secs a mile, that's over 3 hours of time, right there.
2) mental. There's a point where you just have to push yourself to run when you don't want to.

there's a lot of time to shave if you can do a combination of the above.

I've been working on 2. I was still doing a pretty good shuffle towards the end but I was probably walking more than I was shuffling. I have all my loop times. 2 and 5 were the slowest as expected. I may have been too cautious during loop 2 but I was seeing so many people go down, I wanted to finish. I'm going to work on getting more fit over all in the next couple of months then ramp up again. I may find a race to do in February or March as a last prep race for Cocodona.

I walked all the way through the airport with no problems. Saw one guy going very slowly with his Javelina hat on.

Just entered my first WSER lottery! It is very satisfying and took a lot of learning to get my first ticket.

It's fine for me because I don't really want to get in this year, but I hope it doesn't take a decade to get in.
AggieOO
How long do you want to ignore this user?
that's what it took me the first time, so that's what i'm expecting this time. especially with more entrants every year and that people now how onto their ticket counts indefinitely.

i also didn't get into BFC. going to try and get into that race regardless, but just makes things harder to plan.

I'm thinking about trying to find somebody to pace at Loup Garou. I may try to find a March race to do, but I haven't made any plans yet. Other than being tired, my body feels great after Javelina.

I'm registered for Leona Divide 100K in april, but the rest of the year is up in the air. K is running Sean O'Brien with Kyle in Jan. I have a feeling that she's not going to want anything else long after that, so I'll probably have the rest of the year open for me.

Anyone done Running the Rose in Tyler? Looking at the 108k. It's a lot of loops, but the timing is right.

sounds miserable.

i can't remember the usernames, but there were a couple guys back in the day who posted on h&f who were form the area and ran in that park. I'm not sure if they are still around or not.

rocky raccoon 100k is only a week later if you want fewer loops.

rocky is really only 1 less loop and an hour further away. I don't know. I haven't decided yet. I probably need a 100 for March too (not grasslands).

i mean, i know i went to A&M, so my aggie math isn't great, but...

100K = 1 x 2 mile short lap, followed by 3 x 20 mile full laps

the 100 miler is 5 loops, but since you were looking at a six loop 108K, i was looking at essentially cutting that loop count in half for a similar distance.

I think I've actually convinced myself to go back to Bandera for redemption and some climbing.

I'm wrapping up training for the Dinosaur Valley 25K in Glen Rose. Since it's short, my plan is to run, take a nap and then support several friends who are running the 100K.

Looking at the course, it looks like a trail shoe is best, but I may take a pair of old road shoes along just in case. Anyone run Dino Valley have any perspective re the course?

I did the 50k last year. I'd use trail shoes. There are some rocky parts. I just never feel like I can get enough traction in road shoes.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice/guidance! In that case, I'll wear the Mafate Speed 4's that I've gotten comfortable with. They worked well at the Silverton Alpine Duo (50K) and at Palo Duro Canyon (25K) and should work for this one.

i'd go trail shoes too. I've not done the Dino Valley race, but I've done a different race in the park.

Get there early if you can. It's kind of crazy the morning of. We set up a canopy in the tent city section the night before and unloaded a bunch of stuff. You can do it in the morning if you want, but it was just easier for us. Plus the turnoff was just marked with a small sign that we didn't know if was the right sign, so going the night before was kind of good to figure that out.

Yeah, I'm actually getting to Glen Rose around noon the day before and plan to spend part of the day just checking things out and getting a good night's sleep before.

I've been pretty inactive since running the Silverton Alpine Duo back in July, with the exception of the Palo Duro Canyone 25K a couple weeks ago. But it's too late to get in shape now so I'm just going to enjoy the 25K and be ready to help my 100K friends if they need support.

It's also a little bit of a walk from the parking to the start/finish. If you have a lot of stuff to carry, take a wagon.

boom...just got into Barkley Fall Classic on the second round of invites!

It feels weird to be excited to go back and suffer so much.

I have done running the rose 54km once and the 108km twice. Fairly "easy" course that drains well so not any mud and not too hilly. Ran it in 14 hours couple yrs ago. Last years rocky raccoon was so muddy if had to drop at 79 miles. It gave new definition to the word muddy, just sapped all my strength. I am going to try it again this year at Rocky 100mi.

I've been trying to convince AggieOO and his brother in law to come out and pace.

I'm sure I'll see you there. We will have to connect before.

Unfortunately for you, Kyle is going to be crewing/pacing the guy who paced him at AC100.

I'd like to make it out there, but we'll see. If it was later in the month, it'd be a lot easier bc the wife and kids could hang out at her sister's place in Prescott. But the kids will still be in school so it's gonna take some convincing since K will have to take care of the girls solo while I'd be gone. But maybe I can get out there for a couple days.

I really want to do r2r2r again, and Kyle has never done it, so perfect time to tack that on as well.

Well if he's out there, there's still a chance I'll see him. I e got one other guy aside from hbc that wants to come pace but I'm not sure how far he's going to want to go yet. I think I'll manage. I've been feeling cautiously optimistic this week.
