crew and pacers. Crew will be: wife, sister-in-law, 2 x brother-in-law, and wife's sister's friend. Kyle (wife's brother) will pace from 50K to about mile 52, other brother-in-law (who paced me for 25 miles last year) will take me from 52-finish. Unfortunately, the wife ended up with walking pneumonia in december and is still getting over that, so she hasn't run in well over a month. She was originally supposed to pace the last part of the race.

Tara Dower just posted a quick video of part of a training run at Black Canyon. It looks like it's going to get sloppy.
i'm fully expecting a bunch of mud in the first ~20 miles. I got stuck in wave 3, probably due to my crappy time last year, so 600 runners will have already run the course before i get to any of that.
can't be any worse than the mud years i've done at bandera. that clay on the low sections just cakes on your shoes until they weight like 10lbs each.
edit: just saw the video...it actually doesn't look that bad, but who knows after hundreds of runners hit those trails. not supposed to be rain tomorrow, so that should help.

Yea, it doesn't look too bad now, but I was thinking about after people have sloshed through it. Maybe that desert dirt will dry out.
Just drove past the start. Zero snow on the ground, but forecast is for 1-3 inches overnight. Course is definitely going to be muddy.

Just saw Black Canyon was delayed 2 hours because of snow accumulation last night and low temperatures.
Literally just saw the message...after I/we started drinking caffeine. I'm up now.

Best case scenario I'm looking at a 1030/11p finish time now. And if things don't go smoothly, much later. And it's a shuttle bus ride and the 1.5 drive back here after the race. That's what I'm mostly bummed about.
Looks like Hans got put in wave 3 too hope he was able to move up.

i was just looking forward to some post-race beers, but i think we'll all be wiped by the end of the race.

I'm not sitting at home in front of a computer. Cell reception isn't the greatest, so hard to get updates. Definitely can't watch the live stream.
wasn't sure about reception or where all your crew was. They haven't said much else except that the first 10 miles is probably going to be pretty sloppy.
Hoka Rocky (rainy) 50K this morning. Pretty gnarly conditions for my first ultra. It rained for basically the first 15miles with some lengthy stretches of straight up down pour. Needless to say it was sloppy. I was in a pretty dark place for miles 18-29, but survived. I had set a goal of ~5hrs and was able to gut out 5:27 though my watch clocked the course .25mi short, which is a bummer. All-in-all very challenging effort for my first ultra but given the conditions, I'm relatively pleased.
Little concerned about OO. I think he's off pace from what he wanted. The second half is faster, so hopefully he settles in and finishes strong.
I ended up way off pace, but finished. At mile 13, I started getting really dizzy. I honestly thought I was going to have to drop, but walked a huge section and forced myself to get to the 50k mark so I could pick up a pacer. Took until about mile 28 for the dizziness to subside. Battled stomach issues until about mile 45. Was finally able to pick it for the last 17, but that second half of the course is tough. All the climbing is in the second half and it gets much more technical. The mud for the first 8 miles was insane.

Oh interesting. When I looked last night she showed scratched.
Saw Hans Troyer ended up 10th, but was in 3rd through 60k. I think this kid has a very bright future. Seems to have his head on right and is very humble. I'm guessing there are some brands looking to pick him up.
