Badger 100 race report

If you don't mind and out and back and out again mostly flat course, this is a great race. The volunteers were top notch and very helpful. All were experienced and very helpful. The course was as exciting as a mostly flat repeated course can be. It was hot and sunny during the day and cool at night when the bats came out. It was more exposed than I expected. I put sunscreen on every 10 miles and still got sunburned. At one point during the race, you go to Dot's Tavern for an aid station. It's a 70 year old little dive bar and the people are so nice.

It was kind of a deceptive course. I think a lot of people thought it would be easy, but 65 people ended up DNF'ing. My official end time was 29:20:07 and I finished 31st out of the 75 people that finished. I know a few people got injured, but I'm sure a lot of people went out too fast and weren't careful with the heat.

You end the race with a hug from RD Scotty. The buckle is really nice, and there was a bunch of swag with the race - shirt, socks, patch, buff, bandana.

I pushed pretty hard at the end to get sub 30. I spent more time at aid stations than I normally do, mostly because of the people I ended up running with, but that was ok. I was on pace for much faster early on but I think I started to get in my head. I was able to still run towards the end of the race, which was something I really wanted to get better at. At Bandera and my first 100, I death marched most of the last half of the races. I wasn't quite as consistent as I had hoped, but I'm getting better.

All in all it was a really good race, but I think a lot of people underestimated it. It was a good mixture of experienced people and people running their first 100.

Its been over a week, so pity party is over.

AC100 did not go well. About mile 14, my stomach started not feeling great. by Mile 24ish, i was puking. I took some ginger and my stomach settled for a short time, but by mile 33 it was bad again. We got to about mile 40 to an aid station. I couldn't take in any calories, but I had enough on me, that I knew I'd be ok if I could get out of the aid station. I drank 2 cups of ginger ale and started hiking out. I got maybe 30 yards out and started puking again. I told my brother-in-law that I was done and to just go. He took off, I started walking back to the aid station to drop and turned back around. I said f-it, lets go. So I started jogging. There was a 500 ft climb staring at me, and i started pushing up the climb, where i quickly realized i was having delusions of grandeur. Still, I thought I might be able to make the next cut-off and I was gaining on the girl in front of me. It quickly turned into a death march. Having not had any calories for hours and puking up most of my fluids, I kept getting slower and slower. Ultimately, I missed the cut off at mile 45 by about 6 minutes. Even had I made that one, I'm not sure I'd have made the next one simply b/c I was so dehydrated. I'm glad I sent my brother-in-law, as he did end up getting his finish.

Traffic on this thread has slowed to a crawl, but in case anyone missed it, David Roche crushed Leadville this weekend and broke Matt Carpenter's 19 year old record. Hell of a 100 mile debut for him.

I'm sure if you threw Zach Miller and Walmsley on the course, they'd probably crush it, but Leadville doesn't really have the same cachet that Western and UTMB have, so the fields aren't as competitive. Though it does seem to be getting a little deeper lately.

As a mid to back of the packer, I guess I just don't really care much about Leadville. I respect the course but it seems like as long as they get their money, they don't care if you finish or not. I know a couple people that went this year, as their first 100, and didn't make the 50k cutoff. I know there are going to be DNFs every race, but it seems like a lot of people that have no business getting into Leadville do it as their first 100 or first ultra.

you could say that about a number of 100 milers.

Leadville is tough b/c the cut offs early on are pretty aggressive. I don't have the stats handy, but if you look at those that make it to around mile 60, the finisher rate is pretty high. Most of the DNFs come from those who can't hit the early cutoffs.

Honestly, AC100 is similar. With the early climbs, some of those cutoffs felt really aggressive. Even with the bad shape I was in, I feel like I could have rebounded and finished the race, but I missed that cut off at mile 44.5 and I wasn't even 13 hours deep on a race with a 31 hour overall cut off.

I would just think that a race like Leadville would have some kind of qualifiers.

we'll have to just disagree on this one. in general, i'm not a huge fan of requiring qualifiers outside of a handful of races. And even some of the ones i'm ok with having qualifiers for, i don't necessarily agree with how they choose their qualifiers.

Yea I think that's another issue. I just enjoy showing up to a race and feeling like the RD cares about my outcome.

i don't think that has anything to do with qualifiers.

But, I can see your point on leadville with it being a Lifetime event. It has definitely changed since they took over.

Leadville is on my radar - hope to do if before I turn 50 - but that is due to my connection to the Collegiate Peaks area more than anything I think. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Silverton area and mining country north of Durango but I guess I view Leadville as a little more manageable than Hard Rock. 30K of elevation chage? Oof...

I guess I equated it to qualifiers in just making sure the entrants are prepared for the event, kind of like hardrock, which has as much higher finisher rate. Of course, that makes it a lot harder to get into.

I have heard bad things about Lifetime also.

I've put my name in for the Leadville lottery many times, both for the bike and the run. Never been pulled.

I still want to do it. I don't really care about Lifetime, I just want to do the Race Across the Sky. Its an iconic race.

As for Hard Rock and the 30K feet of climbing...that would be hard, but i think spending all that time at or over 10K feet would be the hard part for me. But that's why you get two days to do it.

If anybody needs a pacer for anything now through about March, let me know and I'll see if I'm available. I need to try some gear out (that wouldn't impact pacing) and get some good runs in, and I'm not sure if I want to sign up for anything else yet. Already pacing some one at Arkansas Traveler.

I ran the Captain Karl's 30K at reveille peak on saturday night. Used it as a training run and to test some nutrition. On that front it was a success, in that I never got an upset stomach. I was dumb and didn't double check my pack before I left. I had extra batteries, but apparently I took them out at some point. Even though I had new batteries at the start line, they didn't last long. By mile 12, they were so dim I could barely see. The trails out there are super technical in many parts and they were very overgrown this year. It was impossible to run b/c i could barely see where I was going. After a few falls, i gave up and just hiked for several miles until i got to the next aid station. I got super lucky there that another runner had a spare battery pack that happened to work with my headlamp, and he let me borrow it. I went from 17-18 min miles to 11-13 min miles to finish out the race. Ended up 3rd in the Masters category (ugh, that makes me feel old). Overall, positive experience. Hoping the stomach issues are starting to get figured out.

Well, I wasn't pushing up any steep, four mile climbs.

But I increased the carb intake in training and pulled back a little during the race. Did some back of the napkin math an realized I was pushing over 125g of carbs per hour on race day, but closer to 75ish in training.

Curious what yall do for carb intake, mostly liquid? and supplement with food at aid stations?

I'll drink Skratch or Tailwind for electrolytes. I did one with only Tailwind, and that made me really bloated by the end. I'll eat gels while I'm running, and I supplement with aid station/drop bag food. At the aid station, I'll eat whatever looks good. I'll usually. have some candy and sometimes something salty in my drop bags/with crew.

I start to get tired of gels, so I prefer the neutral flavored ones later in the race. I also generally only use gels during races that are 30g of carbs or higher so I have to carry less.

Depends on the distance of the race. For stuff like the 30K it was almost all tailwind and gels (maurten, BPN). Though I'll also eat apple sauce packets, b/c those are really easy on the stomach.

For 50 mile and up, I'm definitely eating real foods more often. Mashed potatoes, noodles, broth, fruit, etc.

Tailwind and Gu for me. Solid food joins the rotation if going more than a couple hours. For races its whatever looks good at the aid stations and if I am packing my own its some combo of pretzels, PBJ(or honey), chips, oranges, bananas. No carbs, but pickles & pickle juice are part of the line up too as a heavy sweater.

I've also recently started snacking on mini chewy sweet tarts during long runs and those have been tasty, but they are not nutritionally dense at all. Just a nice change of flavor with the tart/sour.

I like Honey Stinger chews with Tailwind. For really long efforts I like to throw some baby food in my pack. Easily digestible.

He had a knee issue he was trying to manage and it flared up again. Not worth risking long-term damage when you're a professional athlete.
