I've been training for the Blue Bell 10k in a couple weeks. First time doing a training program that wasn't for a marathon. In the last month, I've set 5k PRs of 20:30 and 20:18. Think I would have broken 20 yesterday, but the last mile was all uphill and I had to stop and Ralph at the top.

Makes me want to focus on lower distances for a bit. But, I'm starting training in May for the Air Force marathon. Anyone done that one?

I had been training for the Panther City Ultra (50K trail race) in Fort Worth in early April, but got a calf strain that kept me from training for the past two weeks. Just running at a recovery pace and a 'pinch' and slow burn feeling.

Ran 5 slow miles yesterday with no issue and would love to still give the race a try....but it feels like the smart answer is to withdraw, keep training slow & easy for a bit and focus on something a bit further out in the future.

Dang dude that's moving. Sub 20 5k is a goal I've had for a while. After Ironman I may focus on speed.

Followed advice, slowed my pace down from about 12:30 to 13:30-14 and keeping my heartrate at high zone 2 to low zone 3. It's nice to be able to breath, and recovery is super quick. It's a quarter mile walk from my house to where I run, and by the time I'm halfway home I feel like I can run it all over again.

Mileage is around 10m/week still, and I can definitely see people starting this and then getting injured trying to add more than the plan says to. I feel like I can push more.

Thanks man.

It's been crazy seeing gains by focusing more on speed. I also attribute it to moving from Hal to Pftizinger.

I wanted to put in a plug for my business here in the Austin area. I work with a good amount of runners in my practice and offer high speed run analysis and custom orthotics as well. I have had the pleasure of working with some of the Texags community over the years.

If anyone is in need of physical therapy, I would be glad to help. I offer a nice discount to Texags members.

I'm running Blue Bell 10k! You'll probably be on your third ice cream by the time I finish.

Anyone interested in doing the "houston" Spartan race on Sunday? I bought a couple tickets at discount at the tent last year and now one is pregnant and can't join. There is like a $30-40 transfer fee but dont really care to sell it at ticket price just want it to get used

Well, managed to snag a marathon spot for the Disney Marathon in January. I guess this is real now.

Training has been going well, and can definitely feel myself getting stronger and breathing getting much easier. I've only watched my heart rate while running and look at pace after, and my pace is slowly creeping faster while keeping HR relatively the same. Progress is progress.

Congratulations! WDW was my first marathon and where I set my personal worst, which still stands. Not having run over a mile in two months before starting was not the best idea, in retrospect.

It will probably be considerably hotter than one would like and you will wait quite a while at the start line before they send your wave off. I would advise against having any kind of time goal for the race (probably a good idea for your first marathon anyway) as the simple volume of the crowd and a higher percentage of people being there for the experience rather than to "race" will slow your progress, in addition to the heat.

Thanks!

The goal from the start was to finish. Goal 1b is to finish it without walking. I understand the WDW marathon is a little unconventional with people stopping for character pictures and rides. I'll worry about personal best once I have a baseline.

Thought briefly about scheduling a half marathon before August 31st to get an official time and move up corrals, but I would have to do it under 2:22. I think that's a too aggressive, so I'll just deal with the crowds. I can use all that experience of walking around Kyle field before and after football games.

There's nothing wrong with walking when you need to.

I hit the wall pretty hard in my first marathon and had to run/walk the last 4ish miles.

Marathons are hard!

How'd you do? It was warmer than I liked and I cramped pretty bad towards the end. Got first in my age group though!

Ran a PR by more than a minute, 5th in my age group! Didn't know if I would try to go for it until the halfway point. My fastest mile was 6, on "the hill". It was indeed a bit warm. I ate 3 ice cream bars. We parked 0.8 miles away so we had no issues exiting (my kids ran the 5k).

Congrats on winning your age!

Question on how y'all handle a day where you're walking a ton but have a scheduled run.

For instance, I'm at a cheer competition until Sunday. Had a 3.5 mile run scheduled for yesterday. By the time I ended up running I had walked 6 miles throughout the day. 10kish steps, I think. First mile sucked but was fine after that on the run.

I have a 2 mile run Saturday and a 3.5 mile on Sunday. I'll most likely have similar walking numbers today and tomorrow where I clear 5+ miles and 10k steps throughout the day.

My main concern is obviously fatigue and injury. I'm following Hal Higdon custom plan on the app until closer to my marathon just to get my miles up. Do y'all normally adjust your runs? Listen to your body?

First, always listen to your body.
How far out is the marathon? One weekend with tons of walking and no running is probably not going to set you back, especially with the running distances you mentioned. If you're still up for a run, adjust your pace according to how you feel.

Marathon is in January. First race, but I'll pick up smaller ones along the way as they line up with training. It's smaller distances, but trying to get my body ready for Hal Higdon's novice training when time comes

I know my body pretty well from decades of sports and marching, but not distance running so there is still a level of mystery. Just want to make sure I'm staying in that range between overwork causing injury and not enough and getting behind.

I appreciate the response. Legs felt great getting up this morning, but I already hit 4 miles before lunch today and the day has barely started.

The only walking distance I count toward running would be walk breaks during a run due to fatigue, elevated heart rate, rest intervals, etc. I don't think walking as such is strenuous enough to be outside of "zone 1". It may burn a few calories but I don't think it contributes significantly to running fitness otherwise.

One thing that I don't do a good job tracking and don't really know how to account for is how much walking affects the useful lifespan of a running shoe. I wear my daily training shoes at least 95% of the time outside of the house; I doubt that walking does as much "damage" to the shoes as running but I presume it does more than nothing.

I do the same. I don't keep track of how far I walk in them, though, so it's really a moot point. I only keep track of running mileage. I'll probably just replace them a little earlier.

What would y'all value more in the 5 weeks of a training cycle? Speed work or Tempo runs? Running the RBC Brooklyn half in the middle of May.

Decided over the last few weeks to put in an extra day of speed work during training to help. Thinking as I get into the final few weeks I may drop it back to one or the other, rather than both

Tempo all the way. Spamming threshold pace is easily the best bang for your buck.

Time to retire my Nimbus 26's (wore them for a while before I started running at the beginning of this year). Conventional wisdom says stick with what you like, but wanted to see if there were better recommendations.

I'm heavy set, so I love the max cushion, but more return would be nice. First marathon, and not looking to set land speed records.

Top 2 guys under 2 hours, top 3 under the existing world record. Sawe also beat Kipchoge's Breaking 2 time by 10 seconds.
