I am currently one of Beau's deadlifting clients. I started his recommended cycle that he posted earlier a couple months ago and knew from the beginning it was going to kick my butt as the intensity and volume was much more than what I had been doing. I haven't been doing pause reps yet, but that will come with time I am sure. If I die deadlifting in my 90 degree garage gym, Beau is getting the funeral bill.

Tex117 - I am about the same exact spot with DL as you with similar goals. I am likely going to test a 460 pull in the coming weeks unless I am just not feeling it. I really want to get 5 plates by the end of the year. If you ever want exclusive Beau DL content (he may start charging) welcome to hangout in our daily WhatsApp conversations.
It may be about time for me to join!

But....I have to confess, I do a little cardio. (Just a little bit. I like doing a 2 mile job once a week).

I want to thank yall for helping me out on Friday, I was definitely bummed out, but feeling good again and ready to get back at it.

That's what I was saying about taking the L for the ultimate W. I came back for revenge today because I didn't go for a Pyrrhic victory on Friday.

I may lose the fight, but somehow I'll survive. Internalize that attitude and the sky is the limit, counterintuitive though it seems on its face. It's always there for you to hit next time and it's only worth regretting when you give up. You're doing 90% of the battle just by intending to try again.

And again, this is all hard-learned through a lot of discouragement myself. But I always come back and try again, and the numbers keep slowly going up over time.

You've got this until you and only you decide you don't.

Well done! You'll get there in no time!

200 on the bench today. My spotter intervened to steady the bar mid rep but I got it up. Progress.

How do y'all suggest warming up on a max rep set of 98% 1 rep max? I'm on week 5 of my first full cycle on the Candito 6-week program, and tomorrow morning I will go for as many as I can with 390 lbs. I have my 1 rep max at 400 (which I think is a little conservative by about 10lbs).

I have taken the last 2 days off from all lifting, and last squatted on Tuesday (8/6/24). I was thinking, after some ATG to half up, pause, and back down with just the bar (sets of 8), that I would use the 45% for 5 (180lbs), 65% for 3 (260lbs), and 85% for 2 (380 lbs) approach. Any other suggestions on getting ready for a max day?

BTW, I do definitely like the Candito program and will continue to do the 6-week cycle for a few (until/if/when I get bored). I do enjoy the first couple of weeks getting the higher reps in and then tailing down to heavy weight/low reps. Also, while it's more times per week (4-5), the workouts are quicker! I usually do the optional exercises unless I'm just either feeling too tired or pressed for time.

Candito is an absolute ass kicker, especially that rapid squat day.

My personal recommendation for maxing on squat would be to do some tempo pause warm up sets with a few reps (2-3) as you increase in weight. Once you get close to 85-90% I would do just one rep, two max. Focus on your form and drive and get locked in.

So if you're goal is 405, maybe something like:

135x5-6 reps tempo/pause
225x2-3 reps tempo/pause
315x2 reps tempo/pause
365x1
385x1 (I'd probably skip this weight but if you want to get acclimated, you might want this)
405x1
415-425x isohold

I'd make a point to at least do any isohold with your max or goal max regardless of what happens along the way. Set spotters high and just walk out the weight and hold for 10-15 seconds and then walk it back. I did this recently and it really helped me mentally, because physically I was plenty strong enough for the lift itself.

Good luck!

Are you saying to do the isohold after you max out, or a prep for maxing out? I can see it making sense as a prep for the max. Before I would do maybe 3 reps with 365 lbs, but after doing near 400 and then coming back down to 365, I could knock out 6.

Think there is any value in taking 110% of max and controlling all the way down (with the safety bars one or two notches higher than parallel) and then setting it down? Since it's only eccentric, it's not as taxing as going back up and doesn't exhaust you for the actual lift that 10% lighter. Thoughts?
ttha_aggie_09

I would do it regardless of if you hit your max. If you hit your max, do the Isohold with more weight than the max. If you don't hit the PR, do the isohold at that PR. You can even do a controlled eccentric and just rest the bar on the spotter arms. All of those will help familiarize yourself with the weight and help with the mental component

Yes absolutely. I don't think this should take time away from what actually makes you stronger (the working sets) but it is something to add to the tool belt

Wooooooo, 4 reps with 390 lbs! So new calc max is 425. I'm coming after you 500!!!

Oooof, did 3 quarter reps with 425....sure feels heavier than what I can do....

Awesome! Now you know what that weight feels like though.

Just one rep with 290 on bench. Technically I was supposed to wait until Monday for the bench test, but we are flying out to Europe today so wanted to get it in. But, doubt tomorrow would have made a difference. My goal is to get 315 pause rep....gonna be a while

At least got 3 reps with 435 on deads...not bad for the day after squats. So at least ending the first cycle of Candito on a high note!

Hard to press that close to a heavy leg work out. I've never had an impressive bench day close to a heavy squat day.

Starting the 2nd 6-week Candito program tomorrow morning! Now without a vacation in this cycle, will be nice to follow it to a T and see the gains.

You probably have no idea what you can do. Getting ready for a real one rep max is a process. I'd bet if you tapered off and trained like you would for a meet, get mentally ready for one rep, 425 wouldn't be a problem. And don't underestimate a good spotter. If you have a good spotter who will hand off without pulling you out of your tuck, that is worth some weight.

I've always been amazed how strong I feel and how easy sets come after a longish deload.

I agree with y'all. Now, I lift alone in my home gym, so my spotter are the safety bars.

I probably won't ever hit super high numbers since I also do bjj. For instance, last night trained for 1.5 hours, rolled hard for 45 mins, got home late, slept 5.5 hours, and then did my 1x10 (345 lbs) and 10x3 with 1 minute rest (335lbs) on squats this morning. I was really happy about that considering the lack of sleep and how darn sore I was from bjj! Plus, I'm trying to stay in the 15% bf range, so the gains are slow but steady.

I will say, being on clomid for >1 year now, having a test level of 1000 versus the 350 before, at 42, helps!

Things didn't go so well.

I lost lean muscle mass and gained fat. Overall, it was a net loss but not how I envisioned it.

I met with my nutritionist and we agreed that I made 3 significant changes 1) I cut out cardio with the exception of (2) 5K's per week 2) I upped my calorie intake and 3) I actively made an effort to balance my macros (leading to higher fat intake and lower protein intake).

Since plan on keeping my cardio at 2-3x a week, we agreed to start by manipulating my macro distribution back to higher protein, re-scan and reevaluate.

If this doesn't work, I'll go back into a defect and work down to 10% body fat before I try to bulk again.

I finally got 315 for 8 on RDLs!

Took me 2 years to do what the untrained guy my size off the street is doing in the first 90 days. Maybe one day 1 for some of you.

Even though its a pretty modest thing, I know you'd all be happy for me!

Just bought like a 20 dollar attachment off Amazon to do belt squats from a landmine setup. Very low expectations for this, but I'll be damned if it wasn't easy to setup a way so sub parallel backsquats in this setup with plenty of weight to fail within 3 sets of 12-15. Had such low expectations for it, but I'll be danged if it doesn't work like a charm.

Next test for it…calf raises

Asked this in another post but never got any responses. Maybe someone who has suggestions will see it here

My son is a freshmen in high school and wants to compete in powerlifting. We live in Texas and he goes to school in Plano, but unfortunately none of the Plano high schools currently have a powerlifting team. I talked to the AD at West last spring and was told they don't have the budget or resources for one. And according to THSPA, you have to be part of a registered school team, no individual lifters.

Anyway, we are looking at other options outside of the THSPA I know there numerous federations, so wondering if anyone who's competed outside of the THSPA, had any suggestions, especially for teens / high school kids

Can y'all parent find a team with donations and fundraisers? I can't imagine it would be too terribly expensive as long as the school lets them use the gym.
