Houston Controller Warns of 'Disastrous' Coronavirus Tax Hit
2020-10-12 17:01:34.664 GMT
By Danielle Moran
(Bloomberg) -- Houston collected about $50 million in sales
taxes in August, marking a 11% decrease from the same period a
year ago, signaling the impact the continued impact of the
coronavirus pandemic on city budgets, according to a Twitter
thread posted by city controller Chris Brown.
* For the first two months of FY2021, sales tax revenue is down
9.3%; if the city were to finish the year down that rate, it
would translate to $58 million less in revenue: Brown
** Houston is also impacted by low oil prices
* Houston's adopted budget assumes a sales tax reduction of
0.74% compared with last year: Brown
* "If the adopted budget's sales tax revenue projection is
wrong, it could mean disastrous financial consequences for the
city," Brown tweeted
* "This much is clear: the financial impact of #COVID19 and low
oil prices is significant and -- as stimulus dollars run out --
will continue to strain city finances," Brown concluded. "Sales
tax revenue projections should be adjusted or the city could be
facing a budget shortfall of its own making."

I get the point you're trying to make. People shouldn't get too riled up about Sly's moving target b/c it has little authority. However, that is really missing the point. There are plenty of schools, churches, businesses, and individuals who are looking for guidance and don't follow/understand this stuff well. The listen to local leaders rhetoric is strong.
I just want want our leaders to tell the truth and lead. This goes to all reaches of government and ideological tribes.

Well said, and I would hope we can all agree with your last two points.CowtownAg06 said:
