Thats been the issue from the get-go in my mind. We got a bunch of medical folks and mathematicians trying to drive the ship.
They should make recommendations to be considered along with all other factors, but we shouldn't snap to react to everything these people say. They are looking at the problem through a soda straw.
I've said it before, economic destruction will kill 10x more people than the coronavirus.

Hospital CEO is probably a bean counter, not a doctor. Bun B has no business on that list. You would be far better off with a city manager or head of public works than a city planner type.swimmerbabe11 said:

The CEOs are afraid that their hospitals will be overrun with patients and they will not be able to treat them. They don't want those statistics on their hospitals.
Instead of shutting down the economy, build the worlds biggest ICU. Bring in the national guard and ACOE and give them what they need to make it happen. NRG is empty now. Rodeo volunteers need something to do. Let them be innovative.
Take the box of supplies we have available like Apollo 13 and let NASA or SpaceX tell us how we can build a ventilator with household parts.
Best case we have a giant hospital we never use, but were able to keep people working and the economy going.

The math just doesn't make sense. There are around 200 positive cases in the Houston area. General rule of thumb is 20% of positive cases require hospitalization therefore we should expect 40 to be in hospital.swimmerbabe11 said:

I'm guessing expected exponential growth.
the whole purpose of flattening the curve is to keep hospitals from getting overrun.
so a hospital ceo/bean counter is definitely useful. also, if doing their job correctly, has listened to docs on staff.
City of Houston isnt trying to research a cure, they are trying to handle resources and run the city.. so I'm not sure why you'd overload the dream team with doctors.

Exactly, it doesn't matter if it's 100 infected with a 100% hospitalization rate or 100,000 with a 1% infection rate if you only have 20 beds in your hospital

whatever, that would be most of us at these meetings too. Honestly, us Monday morning quarterbacking all of this is just a replacement for the sports we can't watch...and we are probably just similar in skillset (handling a pandemic vs coaching professional basketball)

I found an article stating that we have a higher hospitalization rate than NYC at 26%, but without knowing how many people actually have the virus that information is useless. If we are a week behind NYC maybe they expect it to ramp up, but there are a number of differences like population density, public transportation, weather, and travel that lead me to believe we will not ramp to that degree.
So if 200 people in the Houston area have the virus that means we have 52 hospitalized (assuming none have been discharged)? If that is the case we literally have an entire hospital for every patient we have today.
It could also mean some borderline cases were hospitalized because there are beds to do it now.
