I do know the the fire prevention foam has leaked into the channel, and the rain sewer system has been compromised. That's all I'll say

Well, this is suboptimal.

I'm guessing API and OSHA will rethink their suppression systems and distances now the unthinkable has happened. API 650 and 653 mention really no plans for fire prevention. It's always been the thought that a fire starts its controlled at the source. I would always think doing inspections of a OMCC farm what would happen if everything went up. Well I guess were seeing that now.

If memory serves, NFPA 30 details tank to tank spacing already. If it's not NFPA 30, then it's another one but I know for a fact I've read that document and the table that dictates spacing.

CCPS also has similar guidance documents for spacing.

I don't remember if NFPA discusses fire fighting (foam) guidance. My experience that has been driven a lot by underwriters / risk advisors and since it is response and not prevention.

What is the unthinkable?

Has there never been a tank fire? Multiple tank fires?

Latest Update:
Quote:

Intercontinental Terminals Company released a statement Tuesday evening indicating that four of the 15 tanks at their Deer Park facility were experiencing various levels of fire.

As stated in the release, "Successful firefighting efforts for previously burning tanks has allowed resources, including additional third-party and partner-provided resources, to be concentrated on offensively extinguishingother tanks. Air monitoring continues and, as of this update, readings remain below action levels."

ITC indicated their next press briefing would be held on Wednesday morning at 10AM, and additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

NFPA 30 outlines tank spacing and briefly touches on fire protection options. NFPA 11 deals specifically with foam suppression systems and manual applications of foam for tank fires/exposures.

This got a lot of attention, as it should have, and I hope we learn how to prevent it from reoccurring, but people need to realize this could have been much worse.

You confident in that? My biggest concern is VOC contamination as the plume lowers and/or from heavier invisible vapors. You seem to be in the know though so appreciate the insight.

Please don't be one of those people trying to elevate operators to first responder status. It's stupid and the EMTs can't handle already scarce attention being divided any more.

From chron.com:
An air emission event report released on Tuesday evening states the cause of the fire as a leak.

"There was a leak that occurred in the 80-8 manifold. The release ignited, resulting in a fire within the manifold, involving Tank 80-8 and other adjacent tanks as well."

There was also an article I saw last night where an "anonymous" person said the tank overheated.

Yes, 3 am was too late to rescind.

Besides, the likely reason school was canceled was because freaked-out parents weren't going to send their kids to school anyway, resulting in increased absences thus less money. We had a LOT of absences Tuesday.

What am I missing? How does increased absences result in less money? Do public schools receive state money based on their daily attendance numbers?

That's not good if true, considering the 2 tanks on the right were not on fire as of 11:30 this morning.

It could also explain why they're no trying to put it out instead of only trying to contain it.

So within 12 hours of going on the offensive, the fire was out. Why did they not do this sooner? Did they underestimate the severity or not have enough manpower at the time?

All I know is, if something is getting the wall-to-wall coverage treatment on local news, my kids are staying home from school that day.

Especially if it's a Beyonce sighting at the Galleria.

Are you in management or a C-suite? This sounds like the standard executive response of proclaiming that the last thing done to solve a crisis is in fact the first thing we should have done.

No one. But to act like operators are some kind of heroes for doing their daily job is a bit ridiculous. What color is the thin line that they're going to appropriate? Red, white, and blue are taken.

This. All too common for these types to throw their hands in the air as if the solution to the problem was right there and everyone was too dumb to see it. Nevermind that they didn't understand the issue to be solved in the first place, nor have the skillset necessary to contribute to the solution.
