Went to Slowpokes this weekend. Great coffee and menu - panino sandwiches, salads, and great flatbread pizzas.
Isn't that in Oak Forest?
Third location just opened up on LoPo. 8147 B Long Point Rd. It is behind the strip center that is being redeveloped by Braun.

The front awnings have been torn out and placed with temporary signs. They still have a long ways to go. One article mentioned by the end of 2020. Another article said that Feges BBQ would be there in 2021.

Sounds like good progress!

I noticed last week Kirby's Ice House posted on their Insta with some updates. Looks like it's coming along. They still are holding on to a Spring 2020 open date though... unsure if they will hit that mark.

Do we know if Kirby Ice House will be "kid friendly"? I know the other location is 23 & up, I wouldn't bring my kids to that one but hope this one is different...

I hadn't thought of that but it'll be interesting. I bet it won't be kid friendly.

I was at KIH on a Saturday around noon one time and some guy was trying to come in with his kid in a stroller after the farmers market next door.

Guy at the door told the dad with the kid it was 23 and up. Dad said it was an infant in a stroller. Door guy said everyone has to be 23 and up to enter. The dad turned around the stroller in a huff.

I bet KIH knows they make money selling alcohol and not families taking up space feeling like they're living their best life.

Not a knock on families but it's a fine line when you're in the bar business of managing the clientele and what you want your place to be.

I get that if you're just selling booze but kid-friendly places in the Heights clean up if they have stuff to entertain the kids and sell expensive food. Cedar Creek has long been a place to let your kids play with snakes in the ditch, Wakefield Crowbar just put in a playset to keep up with Petrol's wooden train and jungle dome of death and Preslee's seems to be doing very well with their assortment of toddler/hammock swings. Live Oak Grill on Hempstead is basically Spring Branch and they have a great playground (and happy hour).

KIH's 23 & up policy always seemed to try to limit the *****es anyway but I've never wanted to take my kids there.

What you want your place to be should have nothing to do with the decision making process.

You do what makes you the most money.

That's what I meant. You manage the clientele for what makes you the most money. You may want to appear kid friendly but it's not because you like kids. It's because you think you'll have more families paying higher tabs. It's a fine line appearing what's best for everyone while figuring out the best way to make the most money.

It's why bars are constantly trying to refine "dress codes". It ain't about how people are dressed. It's about getting clientele through the door that pays the most money.

Assuming this KIH has no kitchen like the other it's not going to be kid friendly I bet. It exists to sell alcohol. It may not be what the majority of the families in the area want but that's my guess.

At best for families there will be a time cut off when there's a strict age restriction.

I could be completely wrong but I think the lack of a kitchen will be the driver on ages allowed.

I could see it going either way.

Unlike the other location I'm just not sure there are enough single no kid people in the area to support it.

Seems like all the kid-friendliness would open up a niche for places geared towards adults and singles. We used to call them "bars."

I'd be surprised to see them limit it to no kids. I could be wrong, but it would make more sense to have a cut off time where no children would be allowed after a certain hour. The memorial/spring branch area is definitely more family oriented than the current location. I think they would attract more customers by allowing families to take their kids their for an afternoon to watch a game, hang out, etc., but that's just my opinion.

The best is when you light up a lung dart on the patio of a "kid-friendly" bar and you get glares from mom or dad. Years ago, had a lady lecture us after one of my buddies said the word "sh*t" in normal conversation in the outdoor area of Onion Creek. Nothing crazy and it wasn't yelled out or anything. Had to remind her that she was bringing her kids into A BAR.

I love kids, but when you bring them into a bar, you are knowingly exposing them to second hand smoke and naughty language at a bare minimum imo.

KIH is Little Woodrow's group I believe.

Does the Little Woodrow's in Katy have an age restriction?

Yep. No kids would be a very stupid move in this area imo.

Great spot.

It's one of those guys along with the Morgan Group. I'm feel like the LW guy is more of a consultant to the bar but I could be wrong.

AFAIK, no Lil Woodrows allow minors. The one on White Oak sure doesn't.

Are there any bars that successfully navigate families during the day and boozers at night?

I feel like all the ones I know that have families with nice weather are generally dead at night. Those are Cottonwood, the Creeks, and FM Bar.

Pretty much anything in greater Spring Branch that's family friendly is dead after 8 from what I've seen.

That's not the end of the world. I don't know how people in some area in the heights can get sleep with some of those places. Guess its a catch 22.

I've become more of a day drinker lately so I am glad there are places to chill around here.

Plus, there's always the Blue Lagoon for late night fun!

I don't know what the Truckyard is like during the day, but they have a "21 and up after 9" sign and they were doing fine when I went by.

Cedar Creek does OK at night, at least on Friday and Saturday. I suspect some of the more adult-ish bars like Big Star and Shady Tavern benefit from spill-off from the more kid-friendly places.

Don't all these "kid friendly" Places have extensive food menus? Sone are more restaurant and bar.

Yep, AFAIK. Onion Creek was just as much a coffee shop (no extensive menu) as a bar and I remember going by there at 7:15AM to pick up my card and some coffee several times when I forgot to close my tab the night before.

Most of the places I mentioned have kid menus, so save any pearl clutching.

I agree with you for most bars. However with KIH, it has a pretty open outdoor area, which would make it more inviting to families with kids and allow families to move around away from smokers or other people they don't want to be around.

Maybe I'm being selfish because I'm really looking forward to this place opening and I want to be able to take my 4 month old with my wife and meet other friends with young ones to catch up over a few beers. If I'm turned away because of my son, we'll head over to Lazy Oaks or The Powder Keg, neither of which are as nice as KIH, but will get the job done.

I'm not saying they need to build a playground or anything, but I don't see the harm in them allowing kids until the evening and then flipping it over to adults only at night.

Truckyard was definitely doing okay the few times I've been but I've never seen a lot of kids there during the days.

I think it would make sense to have something that appeals to both depending on time but I just haven't seen it done very well.

I think the key is allowing kids at certain times vs having it too kid friendly where it kills the evening vibe.

KIH will be a welcome addition because there's really nothing like it in the area. It'll be great for grabbing a beer and watching a game(s) with easy access.

BW and Pluckers are really the only two places that offer that now and they both have their severe limitations between parking and too crowded at Pluckers to food quality and overall vibe at BW.

I'm curious if the OTB crowd that hits City Center now will trickle down one more exit for what's going in.

I really think that KIH is going to be a slam dunk for them. It would be a bad idea to not allow kids in this area. I assume they'll be smart enough to understand the types of people in this area

So for parents that want it to allow kids - Would Saturday and Sunday from noon to five be enough?

Would the lack of kitchen with no kid friendly food truck menu change the appeal any?

This KIH will be interesting because it is in an area with a lot of families but there's also no competing bars that are similar for people that don't like kids to go to.

Idk why you would exclude people from your close proximity.

You could probably do 11-5 but I agree about keeping it to weekends only. I think the original plans were to have a Torchy's and a Mia's built on that lot too (not sure if this is still the case). If that still holds true, it provides a nearby solution for a place to eat within walking distance.

I think the closest competition is Lazy Oaks, which is definitely kid friendly, has a kitchen, and a yard for the kids to run around in. But it doesn't have the selection nor the atmosphere that KIH will have.

Marathon recently broke ground on their new building over in city center. Sure they will take advantage of bars there, like yard house. But Kirby's will offer a nice option.

Because a lot of us don't want to go to a bar to drink and be bothered by Breighden and Aydyen running around unsupervised.
