Bighorn and The Ball Room (that's the pool hall you are thinking of) were also in Shepherd Square when it was THE place to be in H-Tine. Like all good things, once it gets a little too popular, certain elements ruined it.

Do you remember that night when Lizzard was partially burned when a news helicopter crashed nearby? I was leaving Taco Milagro / Downing and almost got t-boned by the a cop responding at 100 down Kirby, who was followed by about 50 more converging on the scene. I lived off of Alabama and the smoke was so thick going home you couldn't see 10 feet in front of you.

Houston Avenue Commissary
This place was awesome. On Houston Ave, just south of Bayland. The building still exists and is now some dry cleaner shop. You can see that it was an original ice house for the neighborhood back in the day as the heavy freezer door is still in place facing Houston Ave.
The woman who owned and ran the place lived in a beat-up trailer house on the same property. Her commute was about 5 steps from her trailer steps to the front door of the bar. She smoked non-stop, in fact the whole place was like the inside of a chimney. Order a beer and she'd pop the top of a can of Pearl or Lone Star. I can't remember the price but seems like it was a $1 or so.
One time in there I wandered in the back and a bunch of old men were sitting at a table speaking Cajun to each other. Never will forget them talking Cajun....

Oh and if memory serves me right Velvet Elvis/Melvin had another name for a brief period.
I could swear it was a Woodrow's or maybe a Woodrow's ripoff like "Woody's" at some point in the early 2000's.
It was called Woody's Place after they had to stop using the Velvet Elvis name. It was Woody's Place for a number of years and it burned pretty brightly for two or three. I forget the exact details, but they had a mid-week promotion similar to Big @$$ beer night that would pack the place.

Richmond Chill. Because that spot is walking distance from my house.

Little Woodrows West Alabama

Baileys (off West Alabama near Timmons -- closed down probably 15 years ago). It was my Cheers.

And Confederate House. Used to meet a group of friends all in the commercial real estate business there for drinks on Friday afternoons.

The Tavern on W Grey

For some reason I thought JR's was an alternative lifestyle bar.

The Tavern was fun back in the day.

Jr's was just a pretty blue-color dive.

So maybe alternative to the Spring Valley lifestyle????

Different JR's. The other is an iconic Houston gay club.

Anyone ever go to the other Woody's Ice House around the corner from Texadelphia, next door to the hooor house?

Good call on the Confederate House. As a baby lawyer I had a lot of good mentoring conversations at the bar. I also met Frankie B. there and another lawyer named Whitey that I later ended up working with and who was one of the co-owners of the Velvet Elvis/Melvin. Great memories of that place.

Good ol' Woodies on Greenridge. Used to live right behind it at 3000 Greenridge and you could slip through the fence and come in the back or side door. At 2am they would roll down the garage doors and keep on serving until the cops got bored busting folks next door at the Polo club. I wish I still had one of those wooden tokens you could cash your unopened beers for when your plans changed. I remember at some point them have a grill that you could use on the front deck....bring your own burgers or steaks!

Volcano? On Bissonnet? It's still there.

And I don't know if there was another Muldoon's but the one on Augusta is still going. Just down from my office and we hit it up on occasion.
