I thought the Velvet Elvis was off of Shepherd by Whole Foods/Bookstop. Maybe it moved; I guess that might help explain the Velvet part of Velvet Melvin (that name has always oddly creeped me out).

Anyway, I am wrong in remembering that location as a Woodrow's at one point?

Nope.

The Melvin was called Velvet Elvis until sometime in the mid-90s or so when they somehow attracted the attention of the King's estate and were sent a C&D letter from using his name. At one point after they changed to the Velvet Melvin they had the letter framed behind the bar. Haven't been there in years though, it might still be there.

If it ever was a Woodrow's that would have been a long, long time ago.

Not really the bar itself but Big Ass Beer night at Outback Pub had some rocking nights.

But it begins and ends with Kays for me. That was my Cheers. I'd trade every damn bar in this town for the original Kays to still have open doors.

Oh and if memory serves me right Velvet Elvis/Melvin had another name for a brief period.

I think it went Velvet Elvis to Velvet Melvin to some other name for a period and then back to Velvet Melvin because the chosen name trying to make Velvet Melvin cooler actually ruined it. I could be wrong but that's my story.

And definitely not the bar itself but there were some rocking Aggie Happy Hours at Sherlocks on Westheimer when they'd take in the parking lot. I think one night we went through 36 kegs and like 60 cases of Bud products they didn't normally sell on a Thursday night.

I'm shocked it's still open. Had a buddy in town a couple weeks ago staying at the Hilton across the street. Met him for drinks that Sunday night for Game 4 of the Rockets/Spurs or whatever game it was and there was maybe 2 other people. We went to the bar at the Outback right there and there was 6 times as many people.

Well if we're talking Aggie Happy Hours, then we have to mention Roak and Hendricks.

That Sherlock's is 100% an after work/happy hour bar.

I could swear it was a Woodrow's or maybe a Woodrow's ripoff like "Woody's" at some point in the early 2000's.

Wait, where was the original Richmond Arms and if it was elsewhere, when did it move to the Richmond & Chimney Rock location? I'm almost certain it was in that same spot circa 1995/96.

I went there back then when I was at Rice in 95-96 and again when I moved to Houston from DC in '03. The only real change since '03 is the fact you can't smoke inside anymore, an ordinance which they vehemently protested.

You could still smoke there in 06 I think. I remember watching a WC game there at lunch with a beer and a smoke.

No hurricane hut? They had good wet t shirt contests.

Know Mr. C personally. He used to bartend at the Westcrest Pub (now Molly's) at Wilcrest & Westheimer. Drank an awful lot of take home pay at that place back in the day.

Anyone remember the Pig and Whistle? Before Shepherd Plaza became popular. I still see the building it was in.

Not my favorites but fun to recall: Rhino Room, Voodoo Lounge, 8.0s, Velvet Room was the pool hall i think.

I have a lot of old matchbooks from these old bars. I have an Aquarium Lounge one somewhere.
