The lesson she missed because she doesn't know any better is: "One of these is not like the others."

I would like to know the husband's thinking here as well.

Yep. My point was they're comparing a Porsche to a Toyota Camry...they aren't "all white" to us watch nerds.

You could probably make the same joke with crossovers. Porsche Macan, Toyota Rav4, Honda crv, vw tigan, Lexus nx, Mazda cx5, bmw x3 etc at a glance they are all just crossover SUVs

Not super high end, but very special. This is my grandfathers watch that he bought in 1976. It has his initials that match mine and my sons.

Got it repaired at Swiss Chrono based on FTaC recommendation. Will be nice to finally be able to wear.

Sir, this is as "high end" as it gets.

Love it. Vintage Rolex is best Rolex IMO. Good for you for getting it repaired.

I would put a hand me down Rolex from my Grandfather with 3 generations of same initials against any new luxury watch out there.

My wife's Rolex is her mom's '85 Datejust. We won't ever part with that.

My Rolex was Dad's 25 year corporate anniversary Date Just. Name, anniversary date engraved. I wear it to work almost every day.

Not trying to brag, but my 3 year old picked out my watch today. Talk about high horology.

This is awesome. And a very special piece.

Not only is vintage Rolex super cool on its own, something that is a family heirloom makes it truly special. I have a 1947 Rolex Bubble Back original dial that was my great uncles, my dad's, and now mine, and wouldn't part with it for any watch on the planet.

Wear it in good health man.

Ha. I've never seen this graph. Might be fun for everyone to list out their adherence to this. Here's mine:

1 - I will have to sub out Casio for a Pac-Man watch that you could actually play Pac-Man on.

2 - 1987 Swatch. It was a "skeleton" with a green ring on the inside dial edge. It was stolen out of my football locker, and I'm still pissed about it.

3 - Skipped

4 - Skipped

5 - Seiko Titanium?? - Japanese and not Swiss.

6 - Rolex Milgauss, Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra, Fredrique Constant Classic Worldtimer

7 - Apple Watch, Garmin Fenix 5, Garmin Venu 2, Garmin Instinct 3 Tactical

8 - TBD - The way things are going this is going to end up being a Grand Seiko.

9 - TBD - Glashutte Senator Cosmopolite (this could ultimately change)

10 - TBD

there's a new phase for gen z'ers apparently....buying superclone watches in bunches. I didn't know that was a thing until I stumbled down a recent and random rabbit hole on reddit. You've got kids buying a half dozen rolexes at a time at 300-800 a piece, and so much why. I don't know why a 24 yr old would walk around pretending to own 250k worth of watches with a 50k a year job fresh out of school, but alas here we are. Maybe it's the evolution of the 30k millionaires of the early 2000s with the entry level BMWs, but can't afford to eat or pay rent.

Interesting. My wife just shared a video with me last week about some watch company that makes almost direct clones of other high-end watches at around the 500-800 price point. They have their own brand name which is weird and I can't recall it. Actually, saw one at a local consignment shop that carries watches.

it's scary. these chinese factories are so good they can even fool a lot of seasoned watch repair folks now. some of them are so good that you have to get as deep as inspecting individual parts of the movement as even the opened casebacks don't give obvious tells. I've even seen stories of well respected shops mistakenly reselling clones. They're even getting good at cloning the packaging, cards, etc. They can get weight matched to within small fractions of a gram as well. They've done time comparisons on a lot of genuine vs superclones and even the timing can be matched up in terms of the +/- 2 secs/day, etc. wild.

AI came up with these brands as possibilities:

San Martin best "nearclone" quality
Lorier best vintageclone aesthetic
Baltic best dresswatch clones
Zelos best modern luxuryinspired builds

Also mentioned Christopher Ward.

I'm not talking about legitimately sold clones, I'm talking about clones of rolies, APs, Omegas, IWC, JLC etc.

Actually, it's these guys. The thing I saw may have been underselling them. Dunno. They specialize in divers but the video I saw discussed them now doing homage watches of other brands.

Here's what I'm talking about. This is what the kids are buying, just one of many factories in Guangzhou. But, they're not even paying these prices. There are locals that are "trusted dealers" that are reachable via WhatsApp and buy in bulk. So, instead of paying 1200 for a Hulk, you're paying 400-600…and it's at your door via high speed shipping within 7 biz days.

https://vsfactory.us.com/shop/

Obv no interest on my end, but I do wonder what if anything the true manufacturers think about this and treat it. It's all done in China and via WhatsApp or Discord etc, so pretty hard to enforce. I don't think it's to the level of cloned designer purses, but certainly a huge black mkt industry from what I've seen
