If you happen to have an Instant Pot, BEPs come out just as good in that (as do red beans), but the cooking is a lot faster.

1) whole house smells great all day.
2) I get out of various social stuff during the day because I have to "watch the peas".

Anyone ever tried freezing leftovers?
They freeze fine. I would just recommend doing it in portions that you will want to eat. Otherwise, you'll end up defrosting a large block of beans, and if you don't want to eat it all, end up right where you started.

I'm going to try this year's batch with a Dutch oven on the smoker.
I have made this every year for the last 10 years, this recipe is fantastic and really this is a meal in itself.
Made a Dutch oven full yesterday.
My dumb *** somehow forgot to get black eyed peas until Thursday. Had to go to 4 different stores before I found some, but good to go for tomorrow.
Just rinsed mine and they are soaking in the Dutch oven.
BEPs are rinsed and soaking. Feeding this to family/friends for the 4th year in a row. Thank you for the recipe spadilly!

We are simmering
Simmering now with everything chopped up. Cooking cabbage in the bacon grease
Family now wants to wait until late afternoon / dinner to consume. I'm about 15 mins out on last simmer. Should I just keep on the stove all afternoon?

Yes you can simmer them all day.
Reading the original ingredient list makes me realize that smoked sausage is another item that's gotten smaller while the price has remained the same or more expensive.
