Leave about noon, drive to Dumas, and have a beer at the roadhouse and take a hot shower at the Holiday Inn Express.

Leave in the morning, take your time, grab brunch at Rock Inn inn Memphis. Cruise up and over hills, no sudden stopping or turning, arrive late that afternoon.

Nothing is going to be open Monday. Work or school.

Storm feels more Dallas and East, so 287 might not be that bad, but take it easy.

Dreading this so hard. Flew up here to help my parents. Nothing been done to prep for this. Got food squared away, but I'm going to have to figure out hose bibs tomorrow.

They got their old house they are trying to sale prepped but did nothing in the house they live in because my Dad: "House will be warm enough so no need to worry about hose bibs and we have that foam insulation." Yeah, ok.

Another WWYD

Took care of the house and pool stuff, my wife and I and 5 year old went skiing, flew into COS. We are supposed to ski Friday and Saturday, fly home, via southwest, Sunday, direct from COS. Did a Turo at COS airport, so have to return a car there.

Options:
Rent a car at COS and it's going to be the longest day of our lives, driving from there to home, with unknown conditions. Roughly 12 hours nonstop from where I currently sit, so assume it's a 14-15 hour trip.

Reroute our flight to HOU or AUS and drive home, also unknown road conditions, but definitely south to north is better.

Stay for an unknown amount of time in COS and get first available to DAL.

See if dfw via AA is an option, not sure if dfw or dal will either be open.

I would extend the stay until Tuesday or Wednesday unless you absolutely have to be back.

Ehh, he could be right. I've been around 48 years. Sometimes I protected hose bibs, sometimes I didn't. Never seen a pipe burst. Maybe I've just been lucky.

But I'm not gonna press my luck any more.

What about chlorine tablet containers (w/tablets) in an uncovered pool?

Good, bad, no big deal? Any benefits or danger? My GF removes the containers because she "always has".

DFW area

I run my pump. My equipment is a couple years old because I replaced it all when I purchased the house. So I don't worry about running for extended tie. Changed the filters today because leaves are done dripping. Little earlier than planned but filtered the run time is a good clean the water opportunity.. Chlorine float and robot will stay in pool and run. It's theee days. Not the end of the world.

The covers are not going to prevent freezing for an extended period. But they make you take off the hose off the faucet which is most of the battle with frost proof hose bibs.

I have an older hose with faucets coming out of the ground and no frost proof valves. I disconnect the hoses. I wrap a towel and put a bucket over them. They probably freeze, but none have broken yet.

Truly people, do the common sense things you can. Run your heat, maybe turn it up a little, drip your faucets, open cabinets. Think positively that you won't lose power. Stay home if you can. It will be ok. If a pipe freezes, ie you don't get water when you try, leave the valve open and hop for the best.

I really think that we have somehow been scarred or trained to really over think this stuff.

What sort of robot? My dolphin can't be in water below 50 - jacks the o-ring protecting the motor. Learned the hard way last year.

My hope at this point is that we get enough above freezing on Saturday to clear the roads. Then just have snow to deal with Sunday.

Once we go below freezing Friday night or early Saturday we will stay there until late Monday. Might even be Tuesday the way it's trending. Plus we are getting rounds of precip on Saturday, roads are going to be a no go.
Yep. I didn't realize that the high temp of 34 on Saturday is going to be at 12am.

Should I be covering the Japanese boxwoods in the front yard? I spent a hell of a time getting all of them. (30+) to take well, but they have all been in the ground at least a few years. I'd pissed if I had to start all over. I did put a good 2 inches of mulch over the base of them a few weekends ago.

Hmmm okay. Maybe I'll pull Jerrynout and give him a vacation. He just got replaced under warranty from a design flaw breakage.

all I know is that after winter 2021 I just knew we would have to replace $4000 worth of landscaping. It all came back. Never spent a dime.

We just replaced all our front landscaping that died from 2021 and 2022 winters or some mysterious ailment this year. Debating on how much needs to be covered. Get to do that tomorrow. Part of me thinks if it can't handle our winters it shouldn't be in our yards.

Dallas officially out of decent wattage portable generators. Waited too long to search

Don't forget to try commercial tool house, they often get overlooked. Colony hardware, Big D Tools, Southern Carlson, even most plumbing, electrical, and welding distributors will carry generators. Ferguson, Morrison supply, linde, metroplex.

New model runs are coming in colder. With the amount of moisture coming we are going to get more precip than expected.

Oh, and we won't be above freezing until midday Tuesday from looks of things. Also look to make a run at zero on Monday morning. Or at least low single digits.

Do you know what variety? Some of the newer ones are more cold hearty, such as 'Wintergreen'. But only you can decide whether to cover or not.

So this morning - projections are 24 hours of freezing rain starting early Saturday morning.

This is the worst possible projection. An inch of ice will be a nightmare.

One more liquor run this morning to make sure I have enough anti freeze.

After the big freeze in '21, we bought a whole home generator, so I feel good about this storm. HOWEVER I just wanted to say to all the TP hoarders out there...GET A BIDET!! They're cheap, easy to install, clean better, healthier for your bum, but most importantly...cut down on TP needs SUBSTANTIALLY.

This is the one I got but I'm sure there are a ton of good options:

I know this is suppose to be a weather thread and not a pool thread but curious with the amount of precip and the duration of cold for maybe a week of non-stop pool running has anyone switched from "let it ride" to "shut it down"

No. I'm letting it ride. Been down this road before. I have a tarp over my equipment (suspended above) to minimize it getting wet. I'll probably cover the pipes this evening. But otherwise will just run the pump. If power goes down I've got 5 drain plugs to pull.

Letting it ride. I've got my equipment covered in a tarp and also ran heat tape along all the pipes.

The overnights have us with rain through the day today, going to freezing rain overnight. A pause. Then heavy sleet throughout the day tomorrow with accumulation of 6-9 inches. Finishing off with snow (1-2") on Sunday. Below freezing til noonish Tuesday.

Temps at all layers seem to be cooling faster than the models show, so lean towards those precip transitions happening faster. Ie, faster to go from freezing rain to sleet, and faster to snow.

Met my pool guy yesterday during his normal service and he said to let it run. I've draped the equipment with towels and blankets, then covered with a giant tarp. We dont have quite the power loss threat being in Prosper/Celina with buried electric and limited trees, but he lives close and will come drain it for me if that becomes an issue. If we were more in Dallas with all the trees, I'd probably lean drain and shut down, then still cover everything.

This would be the best scenario, right? The fast transition from freezing rain to sleet to snow? Sustained freezing rain was the big concern, or am I wrong?

Yes. The longer there is warm air aloft melting the precipitation to freezing rain, the more trouble for everyone with ice.

We want to see sleet sooner overnight.

I am in Plano near park / tollway....the lines in our area are all underground.

My sticking points are that my pumps are a few years old and single speed....so suck electricity and not sure how reliable for possibly 4+ straight days....
