Wife has a scheduled induction tomorrow at 8am. Delivering at Baylor downtown. Any recommendations on best roads to take at 7am tomorrow from Lake Highlands (Audelia and Walnut Hill) to Baylor downtown? Worried about ice on the roads having formed overnight. Drove around to Kroger today and car (FWD) was sliding all over the place.

Curious how everything went yesterday. But you probably have your hands full (literally and figuratively) today.

It is melting, but not fast enough for my liking. Neighborhoods in Allen still have quite a bit of accumulation that needs to melt.

I'm concerned the districts will cancel again tomorrow. The neighborhood streets are still a mess in far north dallas. They have cancelled for less in the past. Really hope I am wrong!

At this point, cancellations are less about roads and more about days they (the ISDs) have available to spare and projected attendance if they DON'T cancel. The first rule of thumb in cancellations is that if one district, particularly a big one, does it, everyone follows suit. They can't take a chance on attendance being too low or it will affect their state money. Some districts have built in snow days and will make it up President's Day and/or Good Friday. Others have extended hours and just absorb the days off. Still others blow it off and hope for a waiver from the state -- and they often get it.

With afternoon highs where they are now, 4+ hours of this should clear most roads in all but the most tree-lined neighborhoods. Even there, snow and slush buildup at the worst. I think ice patches are gone, or will be by this evening.

There's also a groupthink aspect to it. If some districts cancel, I feel like others are more likely to join in.

It's not just groupthink in that regard. There's an email distribution with superintendents and district legal teams for DFW schools. They all talk.

Yeah the DISD and RISD announcements yesterday (for today) came out within seconds of each other. Probably not coincidentally.

Just went to HEB in Plano. No issues. I could see a delayed start tomorrow but a cancellation would be ridiculous IMO. Also HEB was surprisingly well stocked (and very busy)

DFW airport is still a **** show, especially American Airlines.

Their staffing is all screwed up and reportedly they don't know where all of their staff is stranded.

The Sun is definitely melting this stuff pretty fast on my street. I expect to go into work for the first time this week tomorrow.

Day 4 incoming?????

ALLENISD: Allen ISD is monitoring today's conditions and considering the ability of school buses to travel on neighborhood streets and the state of parking lots for staff and student drivers. An official decision regarding school for Thursday, January 29, will be shared at 5 p.m.

Just drove to HEB in Plano as well. Main roads were fine. Preston, Spring Creek, Parker, Custer all no issues. Shaded neighborhood streets are a different story.

Plano ISD wouldn't be able to operate on a delayed start because of their bus schedule. It's pretty much an all or nothing for them

The problem with late starts is staggered bussing that a lot of districts use now. Some of these districts can't pull off a reasonable late start that makes the times work

The key will be the school sidewalks and parking lots snd how much they melt by 5-6pm. I know someone involved with Frisco ISDs decision and that is what they are watching closely

I don't know. I just sent 2 kids thru PISD, we never had a late start in 17 years, and that's what I was always told why. I'm not sure what all of the needs are, but they are maximizing how efficiently they use the busses and shrinking the HS pickup closer to the elementary dropoff somehow blows it up. It's possible that it is lack of availability of drivers midday, as a HS drop-off at 11am is a different ballgame than 9am if some have midday commitments/jobs

It may also be that a 9:40 start vs 7:40 doesn't necessarily buy you much change in conditions when you consider what time those buses still need to be on the road (ie much earlier than 9:40)

Grapevine is open tomorrow; Irving, CFB, Dallas, Arlington, Plano and Coppell have no message indicating closed. McKinney says decision by 6pm.

The parking lots, even in shaded areas, shouldn't have ice. Wet and slushy, maybe, but no ice. No?

so many have already closed. https://www.wfaa.com/closings

I think they are all going to fall in line unfortunately. the main roads are fine but the rural areas, neighborhoods, school parking lots are still questionable in areas.

i just drove our middle school lot and it had what looks like 1 car drive through it all week. still solid white.

i miss the days of calling it at 6am. i think we will be fine by the time school should have started but these school districts are too big in enrollment and area to do delayed start or announce at 6am.
