Still no power in NE McKinney although apparently it's only a couple streets in our area. Haven't had a lick since 6-7am yesterday. Talked to a neighbor who said Oncor was out last night for an hour and then left with no changes.
Now that's a special alarm clock.

Would prob be funny if circumstances were a little different.

Had power for three hours and twenty minutes, but went out again 15 mins ago. That's the longest stint we've had since this started Sunday night so hoping it's a sign of things to come.

We are in same boat. Power been going off every hour for 3 days straight until around noon today. We are at almost 3 hours and want to celebrate but are just waiting for the darkness to happen at any minute

EDIT: power went out less than one minute after posting this. Lol. .

Not exactly DFW, but my parents outside of Grandbuey hadn't had a single second of electricity since Sunday night and just got it back this afternoon. Hopefully they are in the clear from here on out. I'm very thankful their fireplace runs on propane and they refilled the tank last week.

Has anyone gotten a good answer as to why certain neighborhoods never went down, or participated in the "rolling" aspect of the blackouts??

The question is "will we EVER get a good answer"?

It might have something to do with this:

https://www.oncor.com/SitePages/CriticalLoad.aspx

I haven't lost power at all, and there's one of those in-home assisted living places a few doors down from me. Just a theory at this point.

It's not a theory. Oncor confirmed in an interview with CBS DFW, days ago, that they don't cut power to areas with critical infrastructure (like hospitals and emergency services).

Austin power company sent out an answer to this. I can't recall which thread it was in but basically if you took a power outage right out of the gate most of those people got stuck with it while those who were not in first round of outage tended to avoid one.

Why? The intent to roll the blackout ultimately couldn't be done because there was such a catastrophic failure that there were no un-failed circuits to move to. IOW, they had no one to take your place in line once everything failed. I'm sure I'm not explaining this exactly correct but that's the gist of how it was explained.

I get that they've been very clear about not cutting the obvious critical infrastructure like hospitals. I'm taking about individual houses being deemed critical (think meemaw on her oxygen machine). One of the forms on the Oncor page I linked is for individual households to request that they be deemed essential due to life support equipment.

I'm in the camp where there is nothing obviously critical very close to me, yet I have have not lost power once. Trying to cover the question... "what else could it be?"

With the ERCOT cascade failure I'd imagine we took a lot more power offline than we should have otherwise. Mismanagement runs deep but I think that's going to be the last, worst decision that ruined the rolling blackouts plan.

One of the big questions coming out of this is going to be why rolling blackouts didn't happen. For instance - I was without power for 29 hours - the neighborhood just south of me never lost power - not even for one minute.

I realize that to give us power and cut them off, they had to move us somewhere first THEN cut their power. And maybe that's where the breakdown was. But no one EVER COMMUNICATED that - just dead ass silence.

IF I'D KNOWN this was going to be what happened, I would have left and gone to friends who offered their still energized house. Bu NOTHING was communicated.

As a point of comparison - City of Arlington water stopped yesterday around noon. Immediate posts to social media, e-mails, press releases, etc let us know what was happening. We have been getting updates every 4-6 hours on the status.

And as an aside - Dallas County Judge Jenkins had an excellent Facebook post earlier today about how ERCOT, Railroad Commission and the Texas PUC fumbled the ball. TPUC did not require certain weatherizing procedures for plants in order to lower costs - those plants tripped early. RRC did not require certain weatherization procedures to natural gas pipelines in order t save money, which caused their distribution system to fail.

Our highly deregulated energy system in Texas minimizes cost but leaves us vulnerable to this kind of natural disaster due to the emphasis on minimizing cost.

CoServ e-mailed us last night at 11:15 that power has been restored to our house. We had power all night. In Roanoke. Hope everyone else gets some good news today too.

I dont understand how this can happen. Dangerous and just stupid.

Plano emailed saying they will fine if they see you watering with the shortages right now....

This happens because there are people who don't know how to operate or change their sprinkler settings.

This was my sweet old octogenarian neighbor. She couldn't do anything around her house. I was constantly running over to turn off her sprinklers during a freeze or torrential downpour. She was a very sweet old lady though. she used to put birdseed around her crawlspace vents to feed the squirrels, mice and rats because she thought they were cute. RIP Mickey

re: Sprinklers.

People also just forget. I turned ours off because this was a big event but I can't tell you how many times I've run sprinklers in the rain because I simply forgot to turn them off. For you old timers, we have an analog Imperial Valet sprinkler system if you recall those so you can't hook a rain sensor to it (I don't think).

I'm guessing the younger folks on here have no idea what the hell I'm talking about. I'll take a picture later and post it. I actually prefer it to digital.

I leave my sprinklers off in the winter. If I think it needs some water, I run the cycle, but that's probably less than 5 times in the winter months. The default is Off for me, but Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Arlington has code that you have to have a freeze/rain sensor on your irrigation system. While they cannot force you to upgrade your system, they will (rarely) give you a citation if it's going when it's raining or (almost always) give you one if it's running while it's freezing.

Highly recommend Rachio or other automated systems.

They adjust by month, barely watering in the winter and sufficiently watering in the summer and will automatically skip based on rain thresholds you can set - either forecasted rain or accumulated rain.

The Rachio model will also skip for freezes and wind.

Still no power going past 50 hours. Since Oncor sent out their message of no more rolling blackouts, it's gotta be actual damage. Really worried about the pipes but we do have flow when I turn everything except guest shower and hot water side of the sink. Don't know about the washer and that's the only one on an exterior wall
