This is purely speculation on my part. I wonder if law enforcement is trying to work him for bigger fish.

What will the officers get for killing an innocent guy?

The lawsuit is lengthy, and they have the video in federal court CSPD needs to give answers

if he was innocent why did he shoot at the police?

They intentionally (or negligently) caused him to reasonably fear for his life.

City of College Station sure as hell better be right on this because they are doubling, tripling, quadrupling down on this big time. I mean, big time.

Did CSPD shoot at and/or kill anyone who didn't shoot at them first?

In my opinion, it the video shows that Hopkins fired the first shot, they will have a very difficult time winning this case.

From the City's statement:

Escobar had unfettered access and was repeatedly observed at the residence during the investigation.

I have never understood why, if they were surveilling the house and saw Escobar their repeatedly, why they didn't just grab him outside the residence and forego all that early morning crap.

Who knows. The way they keep saying 'every opportunity to open the door' is interesting. Because even if the yell it twice and bash in the door and flash the house in 20 seconds or less, that is not enough time.

I was woken up last weekend by some kid looking to play with my stepson way too early for a Saturday imo (7:45). did not hear the knock on the door. Did hear my dog start going nuts. Took me a good bit to just get my bearings, put some clothes on, check my ring camera then get to the door to open it up. Probably 2 minutes in total.

Also, if Hopkins was sleeping in a room that didn't have windows out facing the street, the claim of the bright flashing lights is meaningless. And I'll also add that we have a huge front window in our guest room that faces our street, but the combo of blind + curtains completely blacks it out when guests want to.

As stated above...the city better be extremely confident on this, but we still can't know because they think they can just not discuss what was a major incident in our city and that's somehow acceptable accountability and transparency.

Seems more and more these days the decisions boil down to toys and getting to play army. They'll claim that doing it the way they do it 'preserves potential evidence' or some *****

1000% to all of this.

Video should have been made public long ago. If cspd was right, it seems likely they would have released to show they did what they say they did.

You can't just barge into someone's home and shoot back when they were not the right person you were looking for in the first place. The blame may not be on the specific officer who was put into the position of defending himself, but it surely could be on the whole group of people who are being accused of a number of bad choices that led to that fatal moment.

If this was my kid, and that's how it went done, I'd make it my life's mission to f over every single person in the city of college station who refused to take ownership.

My post was not clear and the point has been made over and over.

Tldr: release the video.

I don't care if it was "by the book" if the book is wrong. What is the city going to change to make sure this never happens again? His parents are doing us a service by demanding accountability.

Overall, I trust CSPD over any other city out there. But, hiding the video tells us everything we need to know. If it didn't show questionable actions, we would have already seen it.

I've said it before and I still stand by this. If CSPD had been monitoring the house and were going to go to this extreme of a military raid style entrance...they should have known that Escobar wasn't at the house when they decided to raid it.

I did the whole college potluck roommate thing. I had a real winner that got placed into the other room of my apartment. Saying that everyone in the apartment was subject to the warrant and raid is absolutely ridiculous in a college town. CSPD's initial response to it was that Hopkins was part of the investigation and that turned out to be a big, fat lie. This whole thing was badly botched by CSPD and they are fighting that they aren't in the wrong. I'm sure they attempted to settle with the Hopkins family but good for them for seeking justice.

I also maintain that just because someone sells "police" when they break into your house doesn't mean you lose your right to defend your property and your life. I'm certain that if someone came busting through my back door at 5:30 tomorrow morning yelling police, the first thing I'm grabbing is my shotgun too. Just like Hopkins, I have no reason to believe that police would be busting into my house and my groggy, shaken from a deep sleep reaction is that I am being attacked and will defend myself and my family.

Raids are dangerous. Look at Fidelity street a few years ago. Somerville TX. Need a bad guy? Wait until they leave the house. Wait until the dude is eating his Egg McMuffin. Then arrest him. The stand-offs are too dangerous.

A pre dawn raid. FFS when will the police learn. We better get the body cam footage.
Curious what the numbers are on this. I don't do this for a living, so I assume they do this because it works well. Seems like a good opportunity for somebody to not hear the announcement and then react to somebody coming in.

EDIT. I didn't catch that this thread was already nine pages.

That was NOT a raid.

Brian was serving a simple eviction notice and was going to try and work something out with that guy and the landlord. It was also during normal working hours of the day.

He was ambushed and murdered.

Be factual if you are going to comment.

Kid thought he was the victim of a home invasion, and grabbed a gun, like many of us would do.

A bit of an aside, but for anyone who was in the Army prior to 1997 or so, calling it a "military style raid" is amusing, because the Army and Marines actually learned the tactics from SWAT and FBI HRT. So the military is actually using police-style tactics, not the other way around.

When I was a new Infantry 2LT in 1996, the copy of FM 7-8 I was given called for room entry and clearing to be conducted by tossing in a grenade, then spraying the room with full auto fire.

And it isn't as though home invasions like the one CSPD performed are not done by dangerous criminals. See this one that happened one month before CSPD broke into Hopkins' home.

We were home invaded when I was a kid in Los Angeles. It started off with a loud "Police! Search Warrant!" then they kicked the door in and robbed us at gunpoint. I got the gun shoved in my face for asking them not to take my catcher's mitt. 5 little kids and a mom (my dad was at work) home invaded and forever scarred.

Leslie Siddons is currently in the parole review process (I signed up for email notifications on her and Scott's cases and I got the email earlier today). I'll post when there's a decision on her parole (her parole eligibility date is August 11th, but I wouldn't be surprised if it takes longer than that for the decision to happen).
