the VLTOR handguards are completely awesome. If they weren't so dang expensive I'd love to have 'em.

I got a Double Star lower and I've tried to find something...anything...wrong with it and can't. Just not a scratch on it anywhere.

Has anyone had any experience with blackgunstuff.com?

Was thinking about getting a carry handle and buis from them.

Would this be a better quality place than cheaperthandirt.com?

Met them at a gun show. Seemed nice enough. But I worry about quality when manufactures are not named.

Brownells gives you a nice discount when you sign up for a free membership.

66 bucks for a carry handle instead of the 89 list price.

Hey, what upper/barrel config and length is best? 16", 18" 20"? I'm talking with respect to these particular bargain rifles?
Kramer

Depends what you want to do with it.

I already have a 20", so I got the 16".

Okay....I just read through this entire post. Trying to figure all this AR business out. Very new stuff to me. But this appears to be a really good deal on the Bargain Bin rifles. I would be interested in a rifle that's pretty much used to shoot at varmints, hogs, and coyotes. Not any competition type shooting.

Should I go with the 16 inch M4, the 16 inch heavy, or the 20 inch heavy?

Also from the site...this confused me..."The 16" carbines come with 4 position stocks and the 18" and 20" rifles comes with an new A1 stock." What does this mean?

Hope these aren't stupid questions. I just don't know a whole lot about these AR's.

I would think for varmints you'd want the 20" HBAR for the accuracy.

4 position in a collapsable stock.

The A1 is a solid stock:

If you are going to go with a 16", get the M4 profile. It is quite a bit lighter than the HBar version.

4 position stocks are collapsible stocks, like the pictures show. You can adjust them to 4 different lengths. The A1 stock is a fixed length stock, like you would see on a full size AR-15. There is also an A2 stock, which they are not offering, which is 5/8" longer than the A1.

I'd get a 16" M4 as a starter rifle.

Thanks Kramer. I guess this is just a little overwhelming getting into it as a rookie. But these seem to be the next step up past a Mini 14 for my purposes. Plus I'm very scared of what may happen after November of 08.

Also, thanks Log. Very helpful info all throughout this topic. I have a local FFL that has a $25 transfer fee. Seems reasonable to me.

Log and deats are pretty much the experts here.

I'm not much more than a rookie myself.

AR15.com is the "sum of all knowledge" but it can be tough to pick through because there is so much information and it's so detailed.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've only recently found the "search this forum" feature. It really helps.

My only dilema is that I'll probably have to sell my mini-14 to buy an AR. No way I can talk the rib into spending another $600 on a rifle right now. The mini isn't the most accurate thing in the world, but I like it alot anyways. argh.

The question will be what can I get for a very clean excellent condition mini14 plus a scad of accessories, and where could I sell one...

I sure as hell can't take it to a gun store..they offer only ripoff buy prices.

Gunbroker. Name your price and be patient. Someone will buy it, and you do not need an FFL to sell a gun on gunbroker.

I've said it before here, but its worth repeating...Do not buy an H-Bar or any type of heavy barrel. They are not "more accurate", they are just more heavy.

For general purpose use I would reccommend a 20 inch rifle, compared to a carbine. Whatever you get, make sure it has a flattop so you can mount an optic of some sort.

You can always add iron sights or a carry handle to a flattop, but you cant go the other way and add optics to an A1 or A2 upper in any way that is really usable.

BRD suggests that you also have an A1 or A2 carbine in addition to your flattop rifle... Oh, its coming back again...where is my medication... Ammo! I need ammo here!

what is the distance that a 16" will be accurate? and how does it compare to the accuracy of a 20" (assuming the user practices shooting the firearm and is good at it)

Remember, there are two types of accuracy: Mechanical Accuracy- what the rifle is capable of when locked in a vice; and Practical Accuracy- how much Mechanical Accuracy degrades when rifle is attached to a human fire control computer (this can be a lot!)

Either barrel length (or even all the way down to 7 inch barrels) may have greater, or simply, equal MA; really the quality of the barrel dictates this...not length. Longer barrels, with their longer sight radius and better balance have greater PA.

Length really only gaurantees more velocity. Higher velocity is an issue for flatter bullet paths and longer fragmentation ranges with military ammo.

Does anyone know what kind of handguards are on the 20"? LIke are they the longer kind that extend the length of the barrel?

Alright, I've had this bookmarked for way too long and about to bite the bullet before politics make this more expensive. A quick question or two for the masses though: 1) has anyone bought one recently; and 2) what's with the 18" SPR? There aren't any details listed in the description about twist rate. Can anyone add any insight into the SPR barrel?

(edit my crappy grammar)

1/8", and you'll need to contact them to see if it has a CAR, MID, or rifle gas system and to see if the sight radius is CAR or Rifle.

The barrel itself isn't more accurate other than it resists heat better. However, it is a proven fact that a heavy barrel helps keep your gun from moving less when shooting outside of a fixed position. You would be surprised how much wind can move a light barrel.

Just got the email from UPS saying that my AR arrives tomorrow.

Can't wait.
