He meant the least quality of what CMMG is offering on these guns. You can argue that the DPMS is a better lower than double star.

Just ordered one of these bargain bin ARs and it is shipping today. Found an FFL in Houston for $15. My total investment will be $730 including the rifle, five 30 round mags, shipping, FFL transfer, and BUIS.

I went to the gun show at Reliant this weekend and failed to locate any better deals on an AR. I did find some sweet prices on surefire flashlights though. Bought two for me and my dad.

Texas Tactical Gear on 45 south. I also looked at BUIS at the gun show and didn't see anything I liked better than the $89 Larue.

AIM surplus has some (not BUIS) that are similar to what you get when you chop carry handle for a whopping $30 bucks.

Just went and picked my two up with a friend who got one as well. All three of them had doublestar lowers and were in perfect, brand new shape. Not a single dent or scratch anywhere. Beautiful firearm and definately an outstanding deal. I am taking it to the range on Sunday, I will let you know how it fares.

Did you use the hand select option or not?

Yes, I did use the hand select option. So did my friend. All three rifles were FLAWLESS

Man... I'd love to have one of these. Hell of a deal and it may not last long. Only problem being that I'm really not in a financial position to buy one what with college and rent and all.

Interestingly enough though, I've got about $800 worth of paintball gear here that I am seriously thinking about selling off so I can get my hands on one of the beautiful black rifles.

I just hate to sell off my paintball gear and quit playing just so I can have a plinking/varmint gun that I can only use 3-4 months out of the year (though I really haven't even played paintball since February and play sparingly at best)... but then again, the AR's could be illegal within the next 12 months and paintball won't be.

Of course I imagine if I were to sell my paintball gear I wouldn't buy an AR right a way and would end up using the money on rent, thus negating the original purpose of selling my paintball gear.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. What is the difference between LAR and CAR as well as A2 and A4 designations?
aggielostinETX

No dumb questions...

A2 upper has a fixed carry handle and asjustable fixed rear iron site.

A4 has a Picatinny rail for attaching optics in place of the handle. Some A4's come with feed ramps as well. these allow for more reliable ammo feed, BUT ONLY WHEN USED IN CONJUCTION with a A4 barrel extention.

LAR = Rock River Rifle

CAR = Carbine, created by COLT

I think that is more trademark BS than anything else.

Thanks. I got confused when I saw a RRA LAR CAR in either A2 or A4...

How about a really dumb question.

What is the difference between the M4 and the HBAR?
aggielostinETX

HBAR(heavy barrel) is smooth contoured barrel that .750 inches most of the length of the barrel.

And M4 profile is thinner in points to minimized weight but still thicker in spots to improve accuracy over the light barrels.

This provides a good visual.

I'm picking mine up today and I'm stoked. Still don't know what I want to do for sights or optics so ill probably just put on a rear sight for now.

Picked mine up today. Doublestar lower. Looks good except for a few superficial blemishes here and there.

It's chambered in 5.56 but I believe you can shoot .223 thru it. If it were chambered in .223 I don't think you would be able to shoot 5.56 thru it. Can any of you in the know confirm this?

5.56mm is the NATO desigantor for .223 caliber

I've noticed that the CMMG lowers are a bit lower than RRA lowers, and I've understood that RRA's are one of the best valued guns out there.

What's up with CMMG that theirs are cheaper?

quote:
Q. What is the difference between 5.56×45mm and .223 Remington ammo?
In the 1950's, the US military adopted the metric system of measurement and uses metric measurements to describe ammo. However, the US commercial ammo market typically used the English "caliber" measurements when describing ammo. "Caliber" is a shorthand way of saying "hundredths (or thousandths) of an inch." For example, a fifty caliber projectile is approximately fifty one-hundredths (.50) of an inch and a 357 caliber projectile is approximately three-hundred and fifty-seven thousandths (.357) of an inch. Dimensionally, 5.56 and .223 ammo are identical, though military 5.56 ammo is typically loaded to higher pressures and velocities than commercial ammo and may, in guns with extremely tight "match" .223 chambers, be unsafe to fire.

The chambers for .223 and 5.56 weapons are not the same either. Though the AR15 design provides an extremely strong action, high pressure signs on the brass and primers, extraction failures and cycling problems may be seen when firing hot 5.56 ammo in .223-chambered rifles. Military M16s and AR15s from Colt, Bushmaster, FN, DPMS, and some others, have the M16-spec chamber and should have no trouble firing hot 5.56 ammunition.

Military M16s have slightly more headspace and have a longer throat area, compared to the SAAMI .223 chamber spec, which was originally designed for bolt-action rifles. Commercial SAAMI-specification .223 chambers have a much shorter throat or leade and less freebore than the military chamber. Shooting 5.56 Mil-Spec ammo in a SAAMI-specification chamber can increase pressure dramatically, up to an additional 15,000 psi or more.

The military chamber is often referred to as a "5.56 NATO" chamber, as that is what is usually stamped on military barrels. Some commercial AR manufacturers use the tighter ".223" (i.e., SAAMI-spec and often labeled ".223" or ".223 Remington" chamber, which provides for increased accuracy but, in self-loading rifles, less cycling reliability, especially with hot-loaded military ammo. A few AR manufacturers use an in-between chamber spec, such as the Wylde chamber. Many mis-mark their barrels too, which further complicates things. You can generally tell what sort of chamber you are dealing with by the markings, if any, on the barrel, but always check with the manufacturer to be sure.

Typical Colt Mil-Spec-type markings: C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7

Typical Bushmaster markings: B MP 5.56 NATO 1/9 HBAR

DPMS marks their barrels ".223", though they actually have 5.56 chambers.

Olympic Arms marks their barrels with "556", with some additionally marked "SS" or "SUM." This marking is used on all barrels, even older barrels that used .223 chambers and current target models that also use .223 chambers. Non-target barrels made since 2001 should have 5.56 chambers.

Armalite typically doesn't mark their barrels. A2 and A4 models had .223 chambers until mid-2001, and have used 5.56 chambers since. The (t) models use .223 match chambers.

Rock River Arms uses the Wylde chamber specs on most rifles, and does not mark their barrels.

Most other AR manufacturers' barrels are unmarked, and chamber dimensions are unknown.

Opinion: In general it is a bad idea to attempt to fire 5.56 rounds (e.g., M193, M855) in .223 chambers, particularly with older rifles.

Took these out on Sunday and shot a few hundred rounds through them (.223 Q3131) with no issues. Also shot some steel case. Flawless.

Also, my other buddy got his in today, and he got a DPMS lower (both mine were doublestar)

How long did it take them to process your order? I just ordered one and my FFL guy just faxed in the FFL. I am just wondering how long to expect to wait. I hate waiting.

Great find for AR-15 enthusiasts.

Off topic but I love my Colt AR-15. It was passed down to me after my father died in my early teens. It is my most prized firearm.

Has anyone had them sent to a Gander Mountain? This will likely be my route as I know they only charge like a $10-$20 fee. Would I have to get the Gander Mountain store to send their FFL to CMMG or would the likely already have one on hand for such a large store?

Also, not sure I understand the taxing provisions of the Clinton bill (I think it was in that one). Will this gun be taxed when I go pick it up at my FFL?

I know that if I buy Rock River and buy it in pieces, it won't be taxed, I'll just have to have the lower sent to an FFL and pay a $10-15 fee. But I understand that if I buy a complete gun, then it is taxed. Do these "used" rifles get taxed even though they are complete rifles?
