None of these rifles will win any beauty contests, but will make a excellent truck or trunk guns. All rifles have been test fired and all are as-is. The $20 hand select fee will ensure matching furniture and nothing too majorly flawed externally. Some rifles don't have a dust cover installed, but will have one included.

All rifles are currently 16" 1/9 M4s. Hand select only pertains to external condition, not make.

That's a heck of a deal. Too bad I don't have $550 lying around... Parts are cheap to replace for the most part.

I'd say go for it. I'd probably jump on this if I didn't already have a couple of other AR and M-14 projects in the works. AR's, especially M4geries, are meant to beat. They're going to get dinged up with use, and buying a brand new one is only going to leave you disappointed the first time you scratch it. Heck, I built my M4 with a blemished flattop upper from LAR. Got it for $36 I think. Runs fine and had one mark on the left side that made it "blemished". And I've put a few more on it since then.

Additionally, you have to try hard, really, really hard, to build an AR for less than $550. If you get one, and don't like the color of the stock, the trigger, etc., it is easy to change stuff like that.

I would see if you could get ahold of one with a Double Star or CMMG lower though. The rollmarks look nicer than the DPMS, EA, and Olympic ones, and they will bring more if you decide to sell it down the road. They are all the same dimensionally, but people pay for the label on the side.

Anyone have a transfer FFL in Austin?

Buy a lower at a gun show, no FFL needed for the transferee. Then order the Rock River Arms parts kit. About the same price and you will have a much better weapon.

What is the accuracy degradation in shooting .223 in a 5.56?

I like mine. No scratches, looks new.

It sounds pretty good to me for what the add described. Who knows, with a little work and a few bucks you might trick one out. I stand by DPMS and Olympic Arms. I have heard good things about Doublestar. I don't have any experience with EA or CMMG.

At the same time, you can get a new DPMS 16" bull barrel flattop for about $200 more. So if you want to be sure, go with the new in box.

Hard to say. Buying site unseen is always a little risky.

Realistically, negligible.

Both bullets are essentially .224 bullets..the case and charge have tiny variations...

Ended up going with an RRA LRA-15 16" CM heavy barrel, with a match trigger in 5.56. Gonna top it with a 3X9-40 Elite 3200 firefly...

For the price, you definately cant beat them. Now I can put my RRA to rest for plinking.

I am AR noob. It says CAR on the case. All I know is it looks bad a$$!

this may be really dumb... where do you get 5.56 ammo?? Is that what people are shooting with these things? I want one but don't know anything about 'em

not dumb....

5.56 NATO is very similar to the .223 Remington but runs at higher pressures, so you can shoot .223 through a 5.56, but the reverse is not advisable. You can buy bulk 5.56 from just about any ammo supplier.

Ruger poo poos the difference between the two cartridges and says either can be safely fire in any of their weapons marked .223

hmm... guess about 15,000 extra CUP is ok for the rugers.

also, can you pros list in order of preference brands of m4s? i think this was done in an earlier thread but i can't search that far back. -or really, i just need to know the brands to stay away from.

also, how much is having a chrome barrel and rear sights worth (actual value and practical value)? this rifle doesn't come with either and i'm wondering if that's the 'catch' of the deal...

TOP BRANDS: (In Order, In my Opinion)

BUSHMASTER
COLT

STAG/CMMG

There is really no argument to that fact that RRA and Bushy lead the pack.

Cost of Chrome Barrel upgrade ~$85
A lot of people say without much knowledge that you "have to have a chrome barrel"
In reality, its only needed if you plan on putting hundreds of rounds down the pipe quickly and over heating it a lot. Chrome barrels are not as accurate as non-chrome. This is a fit choice. It is not something i would worry about.

Rear sights are good if you dont plan on putting a scope on it. If you want to scope the top, no need for it. IF you want them, pick some up for 45-65.

These probably have a street value of 650-750

My BIL picked up ours for $710 plus tax at the gun show in H-Town.

are there any gun shows going on this weekend in TX? i really want to 'pull the trigger' on this deal, but i'm nervous i'm getting something less than i'm expecting.

Are deals like this common? if i sit around will i find some good buys like this other places?

You can buy nicer AR's, but as far as function and value, you can not steer wrong. These uppers on these AR's are all CMMG, which normally sell for 575-600 just for the upper. Even the double star lower (the least quality of what they have) is worth $250 complete.
I think this is a good deal to get in to the AR market, and you can modify it to suit your needs.
If not, you can easily resale this gun for 650 to someone ftf.

Wrong. Olympic is the lowest quality. Double Star (made by LAR) is high quality; I've got a stripped lower waiting for a build, and it looks nicer than the RRA (made by CMT) I built my first AR on. Please read this:
