So, do you guys have (or have you seen) any cool ideas of what to do with elk ivories? I'm having a euro mount done w/ the head, but was wondering if there was anything to do with the ivories, other than stash them in a drawer.

I've heard of guys having them made into jewelry as a thank you to the Mrs.

My dark secret is somehow in the chaos of deboning and packing I didn't get the ivories from my elk.

I've seen rings and buckles made out of them. Mine are all stashed in a drawer somewhere...

Cool, thanks guys. I'm not particularly interested in making jewelry or something out of them, but I will run it by the wife and see what she says.

I'm thinking in might just drill small holes, run a string through them, and hang them on the mount.

Add in one more antelope for my party (buddy shot a doe). And as of yesterday I got a cow in the NW corner of CO.

I've been slammed at work and been a bum and haven't posted any updates. I'll try to fix that tonight or tomorrow.

mine are in a jar with my recovered bullets. I've seen them inlaid into knife handles but it wasn't particularly pretty.

I inlaid mine into a knife handle and gave it to my old man for Christmas. Turned out much nicer than I expected (and pics don't do it justice). I'm going to start on another knife when my 2nd set of ivories for myself someday soon. Pics don't really do it justice, you can see all sorts of colors and rings in the ivories when polished.

Just a non-jewlwery idea

Could also inlay them on a wood backer for your euro mount, if you are going to do that instead of a skull-hooker or just plain on the wall.

Would I regret buying a wood stock on a rifle that may see the west occasionally?

I can be rough on things

Nah, rifles are tools. You can see my dad's wood stocked rifle I used in my pics above. It got some knicks and scratches on it while I was hiking around with it (and I even used it as a walking stick once). He couldn't be happier about the "character" I added to it on this hunt.

I agree with AgEng06. My old 270 was bought 40 years ago specifically for a Colorado mulie hunt. My uncle gave it to me in high school, and it is my most prized possession. I have bumped and scraped it shooting deer over the years and felt I owed it to the gun to give it a chance to draw blood again out west. I'm sure I added a Wyoming scrape to it. Hopefully not the last.

You can always get a fiberglass stock for trips to the mountains. Save a pound or so too

If you do, I'd take apart and do some stock work. Bed it, and make sure the barrel channel is sealed well and it is free floated, to minimize POI due to moisture potentially swelling it. Since the mountains really like to rain/mist/snow on you during prime hunting season.

Thanks. No offense taken at all. I honestly hadn't seen your post when I. posted, thought it was ironic. Hardest part was getting the hole for the inlay just right. You can see a little of the clear epoxy on the top- looks more pronounced in the pic. In real life, it blends in. I was happy with it for a first go, but it is no where near perfect . But it bothered the heck out of me, becuse it wasn't a perfect seam. But I figured out how I should have done it to get it perfect, after I was done, ha ha! The sentimental aspect probably made the satisfaction of this piece more than the actual technical appearance.

Why can't the stupid teeth just be a uniform shape?

Thanks for that idea!

My wife was surprisingly interested in a pendant necklace, so I'll probably go that route with one of the ivories. The other I will likely get inlaid into a knife handle, as you have. The only difference being I will buy the knife, because I don't have near the level of talent required to make it look nice.

I made a paracord "bro" necklace for my 3 year old son with one of my ivories. He looks pretty cool with it. I can't pull it off. My grandmother-in-law has earrings and a necklace set that look pretty good. I think my wife would wear them occasionally, I've been meaning to get that done.

Good ideas! Let me know if you need any help or have any problems finding someone to do the inlay.

Finally have time to report on trip to unit 2b in NM.

First thing is a big shout out to Cowdoc for some great info on the unit.

We got in a day early for scouting. We spent most of the day mapping the lay of the land. There are oil /gas roads on every square inch of this unit, but some are behind locked gates and it is tough to know what is what from looking at maps.

We hunted hard behind closed roads for 3 days and saw a lot of doe and some very small bucks. We gave each spot a morning and evening then moved on. The area was so incredibly dry we realized that water was key. We found another spot with water and I was sitting up above it starting at 1pm. Around 5 I glass this buck bedded down across the canyon. 248 yards and down goes the biggest buck I have ever shot.

Most of all though it was a great week with my 2 brothers and Dad.

I've been thinking about western mule deer all day now thanks to you. I already bought an AZ license and I've done some homework on the Mazatzal near Payson.
