Hunted first rifle in Colorado. Oct 13-17. We got into elk every day. Snowed on us during camp set up and when we broke camp. Monday morning the 15th was 9 degrees when we got out of our tent. Beautiful country.
Killed a 5x 6 bull on Monday, by buddy killed a 5x5 on Wednesday ( last day) . We spent most of the day Tuesday(3/4 mile one way, unfortunately uphill to the truck) on packing out duty, and all day Thursday on pack out duty(6 miles round trip). Great time and a lot of work. It was my first Bull.

Mine still hurt. Mind over matter, one foot in front of the other.........
I tried to carry out the head, antlers and cape at the same time, it was too damn heavy and cumbersome ( and I'm too old) I made it about 20 yds and told my buddy , there is no way I can carry this . Ended up caping out the head and making 2 trips for the head and cape.

What part of the state where you in? I was with some friends who had cow tags in the Routt National Forest that same weekend.

Probably not worth that many points, we got stuck in the pp game in a kind of no mans landvfor a long time, too many points to just use anywhere, and not enough for some really good units , 61 was a very cool , beautiful area. We saw lots of Elk, only saw one hunter while hunting the whole time we were there. So from the standpoint of a great hunt, no crowds and seeing animals it was fantastic. If you only want a trophy bull, there are definitely better areas. Hard to complain about 2 bulls in five days on a do it yourself hunt.

Because it would have taken that many points to draw that tag this season. I looked it up on GoHunt.com, and assume he used a similar service.

Almost all the information you could ever want on any unit in Colorado is available on the CPW web site. It is on the Big Game page under Hunting Statistics. It breaks everything out, resident vs non, youth and landowner.

Congrats. Went on a trip to Colorado and hunted 1st rifle season this year. Really tough hunting with all the early snow. Eating tag soup but had an awesome time.
