A .50 cal sniper rifle has such a satisfying boom when fired... Found my first .50 cal rifle today that I made into my new sniper and a legendary chameleon leather chest piece that helps me sneak unnoticed and makes me go into predator mode when I sit still. Very awesome for sniping.

Finally cleared that satelite farm for the BoS and made it into Act II (?) after completing Fort Hagen. The phase into the next part of the BoS questline series was pretty epic.

Almost had a panic attack when I saw my saved game was corrupt. Luckily there was an auto save a few minutes before it.

Tried something new with clean water in settlements and business is BOOMING.

Most profitable settlements in order:
1. Nordhagen Beach
2. Sanctuary
3. Taffington
4. Castle

Depending on how much room you have you can build a ton of purifiers and water will be stored in your workshops. Sell them off for 20-40 caps(depending on your barter level) and you'll bring in A TON of cash.

Next step is to build defenses and walls to protect my resources. Maybe later I'll try to get a monopoly from the kid in diamond city.

This is nordhagen. Still plenty of room to build more just ran out of ceramic

Are you trying to buile machine city from the matrix? Thats what it looks like.

I got a hunting rifle from a legendary enemy that deals +50% damage to robots that I tricked out with a scope and every attachment and put a .50 cal receiver on it. With rank 3 in the rifleman perk it does 107 damage. I love this thing. Makes such a satisfying sound when firing.

Does rifleman work with the assault or combat rifles?

Yep. Anything that fires once per trigger pull and is not a pistol. Works for shotguns too. Just took rank 4. Combat shotgun does 164 damage now. .50 cal hunting rifle is at 120. Plasma rifle does 90 regular and 90 energy for a combined 180 per shot. Combat rifle does 92 and I have 711 rounds for it.

Feel like an idiot. 30 hours in and I only just figured out that my PipBoy could be used as a flashlight...

Also, Mirelurks suck.So much wasted ammo.
spieg12

The flashlight color is also controlled by your pip boy color. If your like me and freaking hate that stupid green flashlight, change your pip boy color to some form of white and the flashlight is way more useful.

That's OK...I've had local leader ranked all the way up for 4 levels before I finally realized how to start supply lines

I am getting HUGE fluctuations in my population at Sanctuary. I got to about 18 people with 80 happiness when over the course of one day it tanked to 55 happiness and 9 people. In 24 hours. Went there and could not figure out what happened. Slept a day there and then it went back up to 14 ppl and 73 happiness. Since then it just goes from around 11 ppl to 15 and about 55 to 75 happiness. Absolutely no rhyme or reason I can find. I have not changed anything at all. Been doing this daily now for about month in game.

I still have not been able to figure out exactly the parameters for settlements. I figure building luxury items would help me break that 80 percent happiness rating but alas...I just can't seem to do it.

Also assigning named characters to jobs like store workers is folly. They will wander to the store, sit there for about an hour then wander off again. I think they have hard coded instructions in the game that trump assignments. Can anyone confirm or debunk this?

I have read in multiple places that named characters don't really do assignments, however, I have also heard (not confirmed) that they can be assigned to scrap stations and still produce even when not there.

I don't have shops yet but i have one of the original 5 named characters from Concord farming (I think they mention she is a farmer and that is likely her default setting) and I have the old drug addict lady standing guard duty and she actually seems to do it.

As for your fluctuations in happiness and population ... have you noticed that the happiness goes down when the population goes up? or is it one goes up the other goes up? I am curious if there is enough "amenities" there to drive up the happiness, which causes the population to go up (I have noticed I seem to get settlers quicker the higher the happiness is) but that with additional settlers, there is not enough to maintain that happiness level so happiness drops and predicates a drop in population. If the rises and drops are not synced or are not in equal proportion then it could be just a lack of equilibrium in the game where over population causes unhappiness, unhappiness causes population decline which allows happiness to go up and attract more population ... rinse repeat. Maybe trying throwing down more seating area, spreading the sleeping quarters (I have heard that anything closer together than 1 bed per floor tile can cause unhappiness), add some lighting, radio, and television.

Not saying it will fix the issue but if you overkill on the amenities, maybe you can level your population off at a higher level? This is all just speculation but it seems to makes sense in my mind.

this may be a dumb question:

is a legendary enemy indicated by the skull next to the name when targeted?
MGS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The skull just means that the enemy is several levels higher than you. Legendaries have a star.
Wildmen03
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
A skull means they are way above your level and very lethal. A legendary character will say Legendary in the name as well as have a star by their name.

Anyone playing on harder difficulties? Started playing normal, but now that I'm level 24 or so things are feeling a little easy. Get shot up a bit here or there, but for the most part my .50 cal sniper is one shot killing a fair amount of baddies. I would love to see more legendary enemies if the increase in difficulty is worth it.

Finally got back from offshore and am poking around Sanctuary. Where the hell is that nuka cola quantam north of Vault 111? The map says it's in a dry creek bed but for the life of me can't find it.

Sometimes synths will infiltrate and sabotage your settlements.

Try adding a good clinic too. Idk how much it affects happiness, but settlers are always complaining about how "everything hurts."
Thunder18

I think you have to have at least 1 point in the "Medic" perk to open clinics

It's worth it.
More legendary enemies with better gear drops.
My Gatling gun and Fatman still burn everything.

Ok, most of these are no brainers, but some I had no idea about.

Very minor spoilers ahead.

http://www.vg247.com/2015/11/20/fallout-4-secrets-tips-pc-ps4-xbox-one/

Some key things I picked up:

  • Select multiple objects at once in Workshop view
I got so mad when I learned this trick I threw a plate on the floor. Hold down activate (Cross/A) in Workshop view to highlight multiple objects at once; then scrap or store them all in bulk.
How much time have you wasted highlighting and scrapping objects one by one? Try not to bite through your smartphone in frustration, okay?
  • Take cover
Avoid death by never being where bullets are. Look, any fool can strafe back into a doorway to reload, but did you know you can actually fire from cover?
To activate this feature, just approach a corner and aim down your sights. Now you're doing that annoying thing enemies do where you can only get a clear shot on one arm in VATS and you'll take far less damage as a result.
  • Use VATS to counter grenades and mines
VATS is your best friend. it's not just for knocking Feral Ghouls off their feet (though you should) and leaving melee enemies with broken arms (do that too, obviously): it can save your bacon in a tight corner.
Grenade lobbed your way? Smash the VATS key and blow it up at a harmless distance. Worried about mines? Spot 'em and even shoot them! in VATS.
  • Put a floor down, you nimrod
No, I'm sorry, I can't help but laugh. So you're trying to raise your bed count, but for some reason the lovely beds you've plonked down in this amazing house you built don't count as "sheltered. Why??
Well, it might be because they're standing on bare dirt in a place where molerats pop out of the ground every ten minutes? Or maybe it's because your walls and roof are all slightly, slightly out of alignment because you didn't start with the floor. Ha ha. No, I am sorry. Ha ha ha!
By the way, you can scroll the mouse wheel or use the bumpers to raise and lower objects when placing them. Useful for not building shacks in mid-air.
  • Recruit traders to your settlements
If your settlements are big enough (build a recruitment beacon, keep meeting all the settlers' needs, and establish supply lines) and you meet their requirements (you need at least one of every kind of shop and service centre) you'll be able to recruit unique NPCs to come and live in them, tending your stores and providing neat bonuses.
There are eight traders to recruit. Two are found in Vault 81. One is found in Goodneighbour. The others are all in random encounters.

The biggest tip so far for me is (on PC)

Whenever you get the option of Enter or Cancel when doing anything, like crafting, You can press E. E equates to Enter. Huge deal when mass producing something.

I set up Sanctuary Hills to produce a bunch of water and mutfruit for me to sell....but after several runs, it just randomly stopped producing. Yay bugs.

Was reading that the timer for production is random. Could be as little as a day, or as long as a week.

I can store the junk in bulk, but can't seem to scrap in bulk. Is that a console only feature?

Fun encounters:
Ran into a legendary SM skirmisher, he was cooking something. Knee capped him from far away, then took out his other leg, kudos to him though, kept shooting until the end.

SM suiciders are now on my list of things I hate. After two failed attempts, got my self in a good position to shoot at him. After two shots I must have hit the nuke in his hands because he went boom.

I watched a legendary ghoul mutate in front of my eyes and recover all of its health once I had nearly killed it. It then one hit killed me. The *******.

Got this **** scared out of last night... by my dog... Both IRL and in game. Right after tackling a horde with 2 SM suicide bombers and several more super mutants with their psycho dogs and just making it out ... was hiding in a corner trying to recover HP and dogmeat basically jumped me from behind and I flipped my controller out of my hands. A few minutes later my dog who I didn't hear coming to the room started sniffing my ear and freaked me the F out. It was pretty late and I was starting to doze but I was wide awake after those two incidents!

I love the immersion .

The worst part about suiciders is when you can hear the beeping but can't see them. You really don't want to peak around that corner and get spotted
