Compositions need work; read up on the rule of thirds, that's a good place to start. Angles for angle's sake is never a good idea.

Your focusing seems off in some of them, and it's apparent that your aperture was too large in some to get everything of interest in focus (the first few of your collage).

I would also have liked to have seen some color versions, as these b/w conversions are pretty muddy, with no apparent curve/channel adjustments.

Thanks... I'll definitely have to read up on some of your terminology because I'm ignorant on that account. The only thing I used to doctor them up as best as i could was picasa...not the best but that's all i got

There's a free beta of Lightroom 3 on Adobe's site; no excuse not to use the best, especially when it costs nothing.

Agreed. And if you ever feel like not paying for an editing software... Gimp is a great option.

Wow... good pics labmansid. Guess I missed them when you originally posted.

Here's a new pic I took at Big Bend:

I haven't uploaded any in a while so I figured I'd do several from the past few months.

I have had nothing to update with and have been staring at my watchlist waiting for someone else.

Great pics. I really like the one of the hands. Also, the dogs are great subjects.

And no matter how many squirrel pictures I see, I can't get enough of them. Especially when they have character like that guy.

EDIT: The squirrel pic reminded me of one I took a few years ago at Barton Springs in Austin

Here are some of my favorites.

This one is of Anuhea, a local Hawaiian artist that is starting to make a name for herself on the radio here.

Here's one of those pictures that looks timeless but in reality lasted about 2 seconds before the two girls were off and running.

These three I took somewhere in Arizona.

And here's one of Waikiki from Diamond Head:

And lastly, a Maui sunset...

I'd crop this to take adv of rule of thirds instead of having the horizon break up the picture into 2

Chasing Tail... Thanks for the comment but I tend to disagree with moving the horizon. I chose the horizon at the midpoint for a reason. The Rule of Thirds is intended to place points of interest in the photograph at the intersection of the imaginary grid lines. The sun and clouds are very near the POI and if anything all that needs to be done is crop the right side a bit.

In the end, it's a subjective thing and one of the things I like about the SmugMug website that my photos are hosted on is that it allows the purchaser to crop the image as desired at the point of checkout.

Aero, I love that Big Bend photo. Your watermark is terribly distracting, though. Ever thought about monochroming that bad boy in your B&W shots? I really feel like it takes something away from what is otherwise an outstanding photo.

...and a quick HDR pano. The uncropped version is very dark on the edges, so I have some tweaks to do in Photomatix, but the crop is decent as is.

This cropped pano represents about 5 pictures across with the camera oriented vertically, but 1/3 of the frame is outside the bottom of the crop.

Thanks. I've never really thought about making the logo B&W... I'll have to try that.

Here are a few more from a recent photography focused trip to Joshua Tree. If I could only do this for a living (and not take a big cut in living standards...).

I can't wait to print this one big! This is a stitch of 6 Canon 5DII images. I plan on printing it at 40X16 but it would easily go to 50x20 or larger without an uprez.

I love large format landscape prints. I think that would look great in a gallery or on a nice big wall at home. Nice capture.

What kind of equipment did you use?

EDIT: on second look, I really like the flight picture a lot. All are great caps.

Thanks! I used a Nikon D80, a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lens with a 1.7x Teleconvertor which got me up to 340mm at the long end and a monopod.

I've been tossing around the idea of getting a 2x for my canon 70-200 2.8 since the price is around $300. I really like what you have done with your setup and I may expedite my purchase.

Also, including the FOVCF you would be at 1.7x * 200mm * 1.5FOVCF = 510mm equivalent on a full frame camera. That's swinging some pretty hefty zoom considering you only lose about 1.5 stops.

Again, nice pictures. I was really inspired after last weekend's symposium and am headed to Big Bend this Friday for a sunset-->sunrise camp out.
