Wow, some amazing work here.

I just acquired a D90 about a month ago, and from the looks of things, I have a LOT of learning and work to do. I was happy with my stuff, until now...

Great looking stuff foamcows. I really like this one from your flicker site:

BTW, what are you doing to bring out the colors in the panos? Are they HDRs? I recall you mentioning that you use photomatix on some of your stuff.

Thanks for the comment Aero...

I have a hard time with the colors as I am colorblind, but more less what I do is I bump most of my Raw files saturation up about 15 or so points in lightroom before I export the jpegs, then I stitch the images with autopano pro. I then take the finished pano into "dynamic photo hdr". I turn down the hdr part, but leave the color slider either where it is or bump it up a little to give the color a touch of pop.

Very nice foamcows. I really like the first one (is that somewhere on the Cinque Terra I'm guessing?) Is that one a multi picture pano, or was it a single shot?

Heres a few more I finished up recently.

I think the name of the city was Riomaggore or something like that, it is the furthest south.

I had to stitch about 20 pictures for that image, I have no wide angle lens for the 5DII so the widest I get is my 35mm. (knew I should have got the Sigma 12-20 instead of the Canon 10-22)

I wasn't planning on working on Cross Canadian Ragweed pictures until next week, but I have been using the trial of PS CS4 and Lightroom just came out with Lightroom 3 Beta for free until April. Thought I would give the latest and greatest a spin.

Watermarking in LR3Beta is awesome and the noise reduction engine is keeping me out of Noise Ninja for the most part.

PS CS3 was working fine, but when I did the La Salle picture from a few posts ago, I wondered if CS4 would be any better. The edge detection was superb, but not really faster.

Lastly, I must be missing something on AutoPano. I know it works well for a lot of people, but the trial has not satisfied me. It says it can do HDR, but I still find myself batch processing in Photomatix to .hdr or .exr, photomerging in PS, tone-mapping in Photomatix, then editing in PS. Long process, but I don't expect it to be easy for hi-Res HDR.

This picture was not HDR.

Some pics from this past weekend. These were just taken with a PnS but I love this first one. Man it's tough going back to work after even a short trip like this.

Love the colors in the first three.

The second one has a really intriguing "mood."

Good job!

fyi, b2ag, the HDR part of Autopano is crap, don't bother with it. If you want to get HDR, look into Dynamic-Photo HDR. It is a little different than normal HDR, I like it more.

Foam,

Great color isolation on the series above.

Thanks for the suggestion on DP-HDR. I have used the trial for about 30 minutes now and my initial impressions are as follows:

  • Sliders and effects seem somewhat arbitrary, but then, many HDR programs do this
  • Motion and camera shift detection are superb
  • Presets are nice, but don't seem to work with the photo I have been trying initially
  • Very fast!
  • Clear and simple workflow
  • It's not Photomatix, both good and bad

I have used Photomatix for some time so I have gotten used to what it can handle or not handle. Photomatix seems more scientific than artistic, and when doing large format HDR panoramas, this is crucial for me. I really need my process to be adaptable and repeatable. I may find that working with DP-HDR that this is possible. It would really only be useful at the beginning of the workflow with its movement detection or at the end if I can figure out the tone-mapping quirks.

My workflow is:
  • Capture - vertical orientation, 3 photos per scene (-2, 0, +2)
  • Pan, overlapping 25%
  • Tilt up 33% for mult-row pano grids
  • Import and remove xml data with the Lightroom preset "zeroed"
  • Batch to 32-bit .exr in Photomatix
  • Photomerge in CS3
  • Retouch blending errors by adjusting masks before saving
  • Flatten and save as .exr
  • Tone map in Photomatix
  • Save as 16-bit Tiff
  • Final retouching in Photoshop.

If I can get my hands on a 1d Mark II or better I would like to add more pictures to the bracket and reduce the step size. Meanwhile, I am really enjoying the challenge of handheld panos (non-hdr). I shot 7 individual panos at the wedding I shot last week and I think it will give a different perspective on the whole day.
