Love this thread. I'm still learning (a lot), but here are a couple random shots. The pictures of my ring I ended up taking with my cell phone because my 20D battery died while I was snapping sunrise shots... whoops. Critiques are welcome (especially ones suggesting that I calibrate my monitor... I plan on doing that at some point).

Ive had a Rebel T1 for about four months now so I'm still getting used to the step up from a pns camera. Went to the Motocross of nations over the weekend. Its a little blurry on the action, but the bellagio is my favorite so far.

A bullfrog near my koi pond was kind enough to let me get really close to her last night.

The bullfrog shot is awesome. Any post-processing? Just natural lighting?

GS, your Chiefs/Texans game shots are great. Sorry to hear about the back troubles.

bq06, I used a floodlight from my garage to provide some lighting because the flash just made the shots too washed out. The bullfrog wasn't jumping so I put on a macro filter on my 70-200 f/2.8. Handholding at night with a macro was quite the challenge, but I didn't want to waste time with a tripod if she jumped. I did a little color correction, but otherwise this is an uncropped shot.

I was literally inches from the bullfrog for this shot. I was shocked she never jumped away. This one took a few tries before I got the eye in focus.

Cool! Thanks for the info, Dave. I hadn't heard of macro filters before. They essentially allow the lens to focus at closer distances?

That's correct. I use the Canon 77mm 500D lens filter on with the 70-200 f/2.8 lens. Works great since I don't have a dedicated macro lens. I may add one to my collection at some point though.

Recently went to Asheville, NC for a few days. Asheville and the surrounding area is very cool, we would like to spend more time around there in the future. We were a little early for the best fall colors, but did still see some.

A few from the Biltmore estate, a modest home just outside of Asheville.

Here are a few from Asheville, NC proper. The women especially liked this area, for some odd reason! :0

Thanks dubi and bq06. The shots of the Biltmore were pretty much all done with the Canon 10-22mm. It was pretty dark inside the Biltmore almost everywhere, so I was surprised to get some decent handheld shots. I did utilize the poles that held up the restraining ropes quite a bit to get a little extra stability. A majority of the shots were from the camera hanging from the strap around my neck, partly for stability and partly since there are signs going in supposedly banning photography/video captures.

We also took a trip south of Asheville to Chimney Rock Park, a neat drive along a river bed that eventually leads to Lake Lure. Chimney Rock is a pretty good destination for a group that may include people not physically capable of much hiking or climbing, since they have an elevator that goes up from the parking lot to decking near the outcrop.

The drive going to the park.

A lovely carpet of Kudzu, one of many we saw.

A view of Chimney Rock from the parking lot.

Finally reached the top of the rock. And, no, I did not use the elevator to get up there!

A view from further up the trail looking down onto Chimney Rock.

This is Hickory Nut Falls, which is nearby along a side trail from Chimney Rock. Not much water at the time, I'm sure there are times it's more impressive.

Stopped at a roadside farm on the way back.

OK, I'll stop for now!!

Alright, one more small set. I experimented this past weekend with photographing oil on water and got some cool results with different patterns:

dubi,

In the underwater world it's a cave. Dry cavers use different terminology though. It's pitch black down there except the lights and strobes we have with us. Water temp coming out of the spring is about 68 degrees year round. Surface temps in the pond vary by season.

This photo won 2nd place in the Amateur Digital division of the 4th Annual Photo Maui competition held a couple weeks ago. I was annoyed that they moved it to the digital category because it had not been digitally manipulated in any way. I'm not complaining because I still got an award. C'est la vie...
