This thread would be even more awesome if everyone would post details about their photos for the benefit of camera noobs like myself.

I don't recognize either person in the pictures but that crowd all knew eachother and I rode with them quite a few times on campus. This was, of course, a couple years ago. Not many of them left anymore.

Figured there was some overlap in there.

Yep. Unfortunately those were taken last year when I didn't know anything about HDR. I don't have the multiple exposures needed, and they weren't shot in RAW so all i have is the jpg. I could try tone mapping them when I get home this evening and see what happens though, I could probably make them look pretty cool with that.

They were from Yosemite, hopefully I will be able to make it back there in the next couple years.

HDR is High Dynamic Range imaging. Wikipedia has a good writeup on it if you are interested:

so it seems that you have to take mulitple photos of the same scene using different exposures and then use a program to interate them together? or if you shoot in RAW can this be achieved with one shot?

what are some good programs to use for this?

For a truly HDR image, you have multiple different exposures of the same image. This is usually accomplished by using a tripod and using exposure bracketing on your camera. Shooting in RAW, you can make an HDRish looking image by adjusting exposure settings, but it wouldn't be true HDR. The whole point of HDR is to get the details in the shadows by overexposing and to get the details in the highlights by underexposing, and then merging them.

Some programs I have heard of that do this are photomatix and Dynamic Photo HDR, I have played around with the latter. They both cost money for the full versions, but you can download a free trial of both, it just puts their logos on the created image. Photoshop CS3 will also do this I believe, although it is supposedly not as good at it.

PS - The Sul Ross statue photo was an attempt at a realistic looking HDR. Didn't turn out as well as I would have hoped, and it definitely wasn't a great candidate for HDR in the first place, I just wanted to see how it would turn out.

Photomatix is generally regarded as the best.

Basically, you don't lose any detail due to shadows or brightness. The above pictures are a perfect example of the brights being really bright, and the darks being really dark. Bracketing 3 different exposures and then combining them will let you see more detail with less blowouts and dark spots.

Flint Lake, Colorado, 2005.

This is a high mountain lake at about 11,000 feet in the Weminuche wilderness. It was about as still of a morning as I have seen in my life and the lake was just a mirror.

It's a ***** to get into, but what a beautiful place.
