It's actually a blended exposure, i.e. the sky and foreground are separate images that were blended together via layer masks in Photoshop. I think the sky was around .5 seconds and the water was around 2-3 seconds.

Before digital cameras, the only way to do this was by using a Graduated Neutral Density filter. While some still use them, I personally like the flexibility provided in Photoshop more.

High shutter speed, single bright directional light source. You wind up "under exposing" the background to the extent that it goes dark.

I took the picture in my apartment.

I had the flower set up in place and used a LED flashlight as a light source (from above in this pic, and also have some from the side). The shutter was actually set to 1/3s, which is pretty slow, but I had all the lights off in the apartment, all blinds shut, and didn't have any problems. Aperture was wide open.

I tried with a faster shutter and other things, but couldn't get the flower exposed properly doing it any other way (not a bright enough lightsource). I was quite please with how it turned out in the end.

If you're refering to the spots, those were in fact on the lens. Didn't notice anything wrong till I got the pics up on the computer and said damn. My first thought was dust, but then i looked at the lens and laughed.

If you're refering to anything else about the pictures...those are some HDR images I was playing with.

This thread is motivating me to go buy a digital SLR. Apologies to the GBers who have probably seen these already.
