Saw that OBJ finally spoke out and admitted his injury is 6-8 weeks. He's at around week 4 right now. Hopefully the Giants take at least 2 early losses because of it.

On the Cowboys injury front Jordan Lewis had full participation at practice. If he ends up being as good as advertised then the Cowboys will have found 12 players in the last 2 drafts that are active rosters starters / contributors / special teams and 2 more that are on the team. Even better is the fact that of those 12, around half are considered upgrades over the old guys they replaced, not to mention Zeke & Dak being considered with the top players in the NFL at their position.
The 2016 draft will go down in Cowboys history. Zeke, Dak, Collins, Brown and Smith are all either current or potential future pro bowlers. Brown was the #1 rated Corner according to PFF in week one.

The 2017 draft is too early to call. But at this point it would be pretty surprising if a couple of these DBs don't end up being studs.

Yeah I think Scandrick's days as a Cowboy arw numbered. Owuzie will probably show he can replace Scandrick and no need to keep 2 pricey vets. Scandrick is 30 now so I think he goes before Carroll.

I believe the idea is for Lewis to replace Scandrick as the slot corner and Brown and Owuzie are your outside CBs. But as we saw last week, those guys are sorta interchangeable.

If I'm looking at it right, after this year we would save around 1.5 million if we cut him. But his cap hit is only around $5 mil... that's not a bad deal for a solid Vet CB. 2019 is the year we can save quite a bit by parting ways. That's probably good timing cause it will be time to re-sign Brown.

Speaking of the draft (talking about recent 2nd round picks), heard somebody say that even though he's not back 100% yet, Jaylon did more in his game last week than Escobar did his entire time here. LOL, yeah that guy was not good. He was cut by KC if you didn't know.

How strange does is it that we drafted Marty B in 2008 as Wittens future replacement. LOL, Witten might still be in the league when Tellus hangs 'em up!

So the QB story lines between these 2 teams is pretty interesting and interconnecting:

  • Brock Osweiler enters free agency 2016 offseason. Houston overpays and Denver is left w/out a QB and looking at the draft for help.
  • Pre Draft Visits: Dak Prescott misses flight to Denver because of traffic. Denver is less than impressed.
  • 2016 NFL Draft - Denver out-bids Dallas to trade up and selects Paxton Lynch
  • 2016 NFL Draft - Dallas selects Dak Prescott in round 4
  • Present Day: Denver signs Brock Osweiler for minimum contract (Brock is still making major bank this year thanks to his previous guarantees).
  • Paxton Lynch has 0 starts and is currently not on the active roster (injured) and Osweiler is serving as the back-up
  • Dak Prescott is the man.

So I guess the moral of the story is, LOL & thanks Houston!!!!

Still looking at past drafts, this one made me throw up in my mouth a bit.

That almost trumps the McGee draft year.

Pretty sure the guy that had the most impact and played the longest was 7th rounder John Nix... and he wasn't exactly somebody you got excited about.

Good gosh those were some horrible years for the Cowboys!!!

And why didn't we have a 1st rounder that year? I'm guessing that was after the Roy Williams trade. As if we didn't learn our lesson with Joey Galloway. Friggin A, just awful!!!! The fact that Parcells took that team to the playoffs a year later is beyond a miracle!

No, 2001 was definitely Joey Galloway. Roy Williams trade was 2008.

Yes. Pretty sure that McGee had the longest tenure from that draft. 3 seasons.

http://www.espn.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4707009/the-bad-2009-class-is-officially-over

Quote:

A review of the 2009 class:
Jason Williams. He was a third-round pick, 69th overall from Western Illinois. He did make the team but had little impact. Williams was supposed to be an outside linebacker with pass-rushing ability. He struggled to learn Wade Phillips' defense and didn't earn a single start. He played a career-high 14 games with the Carolina Panthers in 2011.
Robert Brewster. The tackle was a third-round pick (75th overall) from Ball State. Let's just say Brewster's body wasn't in shape from the moment he arrived at Valley Ranch. He was on the practice squad and that's about it. He never developed the strength necessary to be counted on to play in the NFL.
Stephen McGee. He was a backup who didn't develop. McGee struggled to convert from a quarterback who played out of the shotgun to someone who needed to take snaps under center. The fourth-round pick from Texas A&M stayed way too long before getting released last summer.
Victor Butler. The Cowboys had hopes their fourth-round pick (110th overall) would contribute on special teams and provide solid pass-rush skills. Butler was inconsistent with the Cowboys, and after visiting at least four NFL teams this offseason, he found a home with the Saints. Butler has potential but needs to solve the inconsistency problems.
Brandon Williams. The linebacker from Texas Tech was another fourth-round pick. The Fort Worth native played six games in 2010 and that was it. He didn't show much ability. He did battle some injuries but was inconsistent when healthy.
DeAngelo Smith. Smith was a fifth-round pick who didn't make the 53-man roster. The Cowboys thought he could be a solid cover guy, but he just didn't provide the club with enough confidence to make the team, let alone sustain a long-term career. Smith's claim to fame was getting beat by David Buehler in the 40 during training camp.
Michael Hamlin. The safety from Clemson was a fifth-round choice who did make the team but had little impact. He didn't contribute much on special teams. He played in four games with Jacksonville in 2010 and is out of the league.
David Buehler. The kicker from USC displayed a strong leg on kickoffs, but a groin injury in 2011 ended his time with the Cowboys. A fifth-round pick, Buehler converted 75 percent of his field goals, including a career-long 53-yarder. Consistency was an issue, and he didn't kick for anybody last season as he recovered from surgery on his groin. He signed with the New York Giants and could make the roster.

Stephen Hodge. The linebacker/safety from TCU just couldn't recover from his knee injuries. Hodge was projected as a special-teams ace, but his health prevented him from becoming one. This sixth-round pick just didn't work out.
John Phillips. The sixth-round tight end played well at times. He wasn't better than Martellus Bennett, a second-round pick from 2008. Phillips tore his ACL in the 2010 preseason opener and it slowed his progress. He was surpassed by James Hanna, a sixth-round pick in 2012, late last season. Phillips signed a free-agent deal with San Diego.
Mike Mickens. He was a seventh-round selection who is out of the league and didn't play any NFL games.
Manuel Johnson. Johnson was an East Texas favorite who made some plays in the preseason but never did enough to make the 53-man roster.

I thought the "Special Teams" draft was in 2005 when the Cowboys took Barbie Carpenter in the first round.

Yep, that was the infamous special teams draft.

When post draft Jerry told the media this was a draft geared to improving the special teams. And everyone just looked at one another and thought "cause you guys have every other hole filled and are a championship team or.....?"

I remember after that draft wondering how they had 12 picks. It's almost impossible to choose that many and not hit on a single player.
jr15aggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think that was 2007 after the magical 13-3 season and Jerry thought "we are this close". Heck most of us thought that.

But yeah, that draft was ridiculous! Even the most blind loyalty fans (like me) thought it was a crap draft.

Green Bay has the Dallas syndrome tonight. Bad O-line play, dumb penalties and mistakes, QB is off and WRs can't catch.

I feel the one thing we are missing on offense is a legit deep threat. Denver never had to worry about someone taking the top off the defense.

I think that has more to do with Dak. I love him, think he's the future.. but if I had one complaint it is his inability to throw a good deep ball consistently.

Is Dez the worst Superstar in sports? He is only in the good not great status. He doesn't run good routes, hands are okay not great, he can mentally be messed with way to easy. He doesn't appear to me close to a game changer or even a real number one receiver on a most good teams.

Calm down. Cowboys just played the best coverage team in the NFL on the road. Dez is fine. The cowboys will be fine.

Not a Cowboy fan per say. Just started watching them last year after moving here. That's my observation from last year and so far this year. If he cannot dominate based on his size over the other guy he doesn't seem to have much game otherwise. I realize my sample isn't huge, but I get the impression that has always been the case? Am I way off?

The only play I was disappointed with Dez was the 50/50 jump ball he failed to come down with in the end zone. Dak was off with his throws and shoulda had 2 pick 6s if not for Dez playing defense.

He looked great agaisnt the Giants last week. The box score didn't show it but he was held at least 3 times by Jenkins and was inches away from a TD (couldn't get his left foot in bounds). If you aren't a cowboys fan and haven't watched more than a season, you don't really have credibility to commentate on the entirety of someone's 7 year career.

I partially agree with you. I think he is pretty average in all areas except when it comes to the point of the catch. He is not a receiver that will get 100+ yards consistently or lots of catches.

However, he is a receiver that will get a TD nearly every game. That isn't to be discounted. His strength is coming down with the jump balls. Probably the best receiver in the game when it comes to that.

I am a Cowboy and have watched every snap of Dez career. He is a number one WR most of the time but he's far from elite. He gets by on pure athletisism and toughness. So corners who are just as athletic and rough give him problems. It woukd nice if after all these years he could run a nice route and create separation. Just watch some tape on Antonio Brown or Julio Jones. Dez isn't close to those guys despite getting paid around the same.
