Personal anecdote but we received much different treatment in Europe when people would hear us speak Spanish as a family. My wife also speaks French and the treatment in Paris is night and day when she code switches on them.

I was in Italy 2 decades ago and they absolutely hated foreigners, especially American tourists. This was during GWB times and the GWOT. We still had a good time, though, because we had some coin and the Italians had no choice but to serve us.

The lie about Americans being the most racist country in existence is just that. Lies made up by the grievance class who always seems to want more. Interestingly enough, they want to somehow take credit for people acting kindly, in general, to most people from out of town. People that they actively hate and have zero connection to. Maybe they will finally wake up, but I doubt it.

It's almost palpable how much they hate "flyover" people, when they are so far showing to be the most generous and welcoming to our European and International guests.

I had the exact opposite experience. The people were very friendly and hospitable. Our hotel clerk helped us set up our train tickets to Levanto and called the B&B we were staying at to coordinate getting from the train station to the B&B. We had a wonderful time.

Saw a great one on Insta of a German dude in a bar, amazed at the plaques commemorating various American soldiers.

He said "can you imagine us commemorating Uncle Dolph serving in the First Panzer... hahaha". Then he sighs and says "Man, I'm so f-ing jealous..."

Yeah, this is it. This dude is a comedian and funny as hell.

What she is expressing is certainly true of Germans also. I have many friends with German mothers, and their mindset is very different than ours. Germans complaining about everything is a joke rooted in truth.

Proud to be an American. Proud to be a Texan. Last week I was in west Texas, and those people are even nicer than average Texans, but I knew that.

I was watching some different streams especially about Dallas. Europeans start with Waffle House, then a full tray at Terry Blacks for lunch and Texas Roadhouse massive steak for dinner and Cheesecake Factory for dessert. Guys, guys, guys! Don't have to eat all of that in the same day! We certainly don't.

The French are the ridiculous ones. Not a damn thing wrong sporting a Buccees hat. With the Buccee lovefest going on the World Cup is paying for our 2028 National Championship.

I had a manager who was French (but from the Belgium boarder) and very cool.
He loved living in America; he ended up living in Austin while here and had only good thing to say about America... except for the bread. He hated the bread the bread here.... which just meant every time there was a group dinner people kept getting extra bread amd rolls and giving them them to him

You know that the Buc-ees hat is going to be the must have apparel in Europe to prove you went to Texas for the World Cup.

Plus a pit stop for some snacks at Buc-ees. Not to mention what they might eat at the stadium. It is almost as if they are Oliver Twist asking for more please.

Every time I pass a Buc-ee's I'm automatically stopping for at least a half a pound of western style peppered.

And maybe a couple of free samples.

I'll tell you this. I love buc-cees.

But I also hate it.

Its a great place for a road warrior like me to be able to stop and get some bada** stuff for the road. Clean bathrooms, etc.

on the other hand, the parking lot and crowds are awful. They are anxiety inducing, blood pressure raising, stress magnets.

Only on the holidays. I find them reasonable on typical stops during the week.

And even when crowded, the check out lines are insanely quick. We stopped at a brand new one in middle-of-nowhere-Alabama on a road trip to Florida in March 2021 and they had to have traffic conductors and coned off lanes in the parking lot. The place was swarming and the lines were long. Felt like the whole county and then some decided to go there that day. It was pretty chaotic, but we were still in and out of there very quick.

People do not create a 2 billion dollar business on clean bathrooms alone. Those bathrooms may get people inside but it is the food and the branded merch sold that is the brilliance of their business model.

The root of her point is really about the slippery slope of freedom. We all give up a little of our rights every day with every law that gets passed. It is almost always something minor. But then it accumulates. And the more it does, the more you start to realize all of the freedom you have willingly given up over the years. That's where most of Europe is now. Its something young people also seldom realize because they haven't been around long enough to notice.

I don't know man, for a gas station, I can't think of anything that comes even close. I'm a big fan of their jerky and enjoy both the chopped brisket sandwich and pulled pork sandwiches. The homemade chips are delicious too and I don't know of any other places I can get the equivalent. Their breakfast tacos and burritos are great. I will never understand the people who slam their food...it's not designed to be a Michelin rated restaurant...just a place to get vastly superior food and snacks on-the-go compared to what the competitors (Love's, Valero, Exxon, etc.) are offering.

I think dunking on Buc-ees is just kind of a popular trend for some native Texans. I've got buddies who can't think of a nice thing to say about Buc-ees and I'll never get it.

If he was accustomed to bread leavened with sourdough at home, and even homemade bread, it makes sense. They use different grinds of flours in Europe (see 0, 1, and double 00 in Italy), and even if it is something as small as not using sugar to speed up the yeast, that can make a big difference over time.

The lack of sugar in bread is one of the reasons I think they refer to our bread as 'cake'.

Once you learn to take your time, laminated dough is actually pretty easy. I put off making croissants for the longest time because I was concerned about temp control. My concerns turned out to be unfounded.
