This is great news. That must mean the rest of the border is secure, right?
No, I don't care what CNN or Miss NOW said this time

There's no reason to have a wall anywhere from Del Rio to Fort Quitman. People who know the area, Republican and Democrat, generally agree on this.

They started construction yesterday apparently.

https://biologicaldiversity.org/w/news/press-releases/federal-contractors-begin-border-construction-in-big-bend-national-park-2026-08-06/

"Bulldozers broke ground today on border barrier and road construction in Big Bend National Park amid widespread bipartisan opposition. Videos shared with the Center for Biological Diversity show contractors plowing through native vegetation along the Rio Grande's riparian corridor, with the iconic Santa Elena Canyon visible in the background."

"Opposition to the project spans the political spectrum. All five sheriffs along the Big Bend border region have opposed barrier construction, saying the region's mountains, canyons, desert and Rio Grande already provide a formidable natural barrier. All 14 Texas border county judges have called for greater transparency and border security measures better suited to the terrain. Seven former Big Bend National Park superintendents have urged DHS to reject the waivers. Last week, the Texas land commissioner sent a cease-and-desist order to Customs and Border Protection and federal contractors for illegally clearing state land for border wall construction."

This is so unnecessary. That area has never been a hotspot for illegal border crossings (unless you count the random cows and horses that wander back and forth).

There is no wall going up in Big Bend NP. Some roads and surveillance yes.

Feel free to side with Mother Jones and AOC on the issue based on a headline.

I'll stick with the Trump admin until further notice.

Typical MAGA that will do whatever Trump tells him.

He won't see the wall from his golden throne in Mar-a-largo, so he doesn't give two ****s about it. Typical Trump.

This won't move the needle for any MAGAT "conservatives," though. They'd rather conserve Trump's freedom to make billions of dollars on memecoins instead of conserving the natural wonder of our land.

Y'all know a wall wouldn't be going up if the democrats weren't enemies of the state?

I grew up north of Big Bend and don't agree. I thought seeing Border Patrol helicopters and trucks chasing people was just normal life.

Specifically within the park its pretty minimal. Within the entire Big Bend sector there were about 3100 apprehensions in 2025 (down 74% since 2023).

And keep in mind the Big Bend Sector is massive. It covers 165K square miles including all of Oklahoma

Even if they stick to their "Smart Wall" idea, bulldozing new roads all across the park just isn't necessary.

Until Democrats enforce the border, its necessary.

Is Big Bend National Park a hotbed of illegal and cartel activity? I was under the impression it was a pretty safe place and had almost zero crossings due to the geography.

More curious about the ROI and opportunity cost side (in terms of whether money could be spent more effectively).

I know, I know.....expecting a politician to spend tax dollars wisely....I was clearly born yesterday.

Anyone going anytime soon? I'd rather see some real pictures with locations before we start to condemn everything border wall related. Hell, that could just be some standard road grading.

I went before it became a haven to the neuvo-bougie who love them Terlingua and Marfa, and once since.

And as with all things, the privileged and entitled do, they ruined everything that made that part of Texas unique and special.

Trump can build a twenty-foot wall around that entire part of Texas for all I care now.

That area used to be a real gem to this state. Used to.

What did they do there?

I grew up out there and now live in Arizona. Harsh terrain and difficult conditions don't seem to be an obstacle.

Good to know. I was planning on running an ultra-distance trail race there early next year, but sounds like I may need to do a bit more research on whether that's a good idea.

There's a ton of other fantastic places to race, so if Big Bend isn't a great option, I'll just replace it with something a bit further north.

No, it is not. I've hiked, backtracked and driven the roads there for over 30 years. I rarely hike/backpack marked trails. I've camped in very remote places. I've see one "illegal". He was riding his horse back to Mexico after having purchased groceries at the Rio Grande Village store.

There is nothing south of there and it's a long way north to any "civilization". Yes, there are and have been illegal crossings. Here's what happens. The coyote gets them to the river south of Terlingua. They're almost dead. He points to the Terlingua lights and says "there's Midland" and leaves them. They never make Midland or anywhere else north of Terlingua.

The eminent domain of forcing landowners off their property to build the national park was to preserve it. What they are doing now is irresponsible and breaks that original promise.

If you haven't been there and spent time there and walked the land you can't possibly understand the potential damage this will do.

You mentioned you're an ultra runner. There is a guy on the Health & Fitness board who is too. I helped support his canyon to canyon run at Big Bend a few years ago. I was out there at 3am, alone, along the river waiting for him and his partner to arrive and refuel. I felt totally safe and would do it again. Do your run!

People are acting like there are no existing roads in the region and one new gravel one somehow is ruining the entire Big Bend.

Thank you for sharing both your experiences and your perspective with me, much appreciated.

With even Big Bend now being wrapped up into political debate, it's nice to hear from someone who has spent significant time there (and enjoyed it and felt safe). I trust your perspective far more than I would of any politician, lobbyist, contractor, etc.

That's also cool that you helped support one of the Health & Fitness ultra runners on his run. Even when you have your gear, a plan, etc. it's always nice to have a friend / supporter out there.

My plan is to race in Colorado in a couple weeks (where I'll likely DNF or finish way back), then Palo Duro Canyon in October, and then Big Bend in January.

So in other words it's either a beautiful place where one can safely camp, hike, run.

Or it's packed with cartel members and murderers, and I'm unlikely to make it out alive.

Well, glad I got that cleared up. I won't add you or jja to my team if I go haha.

Just don't go taking milky way photos at 1am <10 miles from the border in the middle of nowhere you'll be fine

Are there any Texag posters in the area that can actually confirm what's going on.

For the record building a wall there is a horrible , if nothing else it's bad on return on investment

Given that the race takes place almost all within 10 miles of the border, goes into the middle of the night and that entire part of Texas is the middle of nowhere, sounds like I'm doomed for sure.

All kidding aside, it's probably still much safer to run on the border at 1:00 am than to run the 3-Mile loop at Houston's Memorial Park on almost any day of the week.

Apologies if I've derailed into a short safety discussion about Big Bend National Park rather than political debate between Republicans and Democrats. I'll exit now and hop onto some sites whose focus isn't political.

It is if they charge me a fee to drive down them and I get to see more of the park
