Hydraulic barriers were too much for NOLA.

Even Jersey barriers were too much for NOLA.

It doesn't get much more basic than a wheel loader and jersey barriers but it was simply too much.

The barriers were being repaired is what I've read
Read that as well. But if removed for repair, given they were put there in the first place to prevent traffic from entering, they should have put something there temporarily (heavy equipment), especially around a major holiday.

NO operates like your average, everyday third world ****hole...so there's that.

100% Nola Mayor office & city council been under democrat control for a while. Democrat controlled cities are a sh&tshow.
I would be surprised if New Orleans has EVER had a mayor that wasn't a Democrat. Maybe during reconstruction?

Bourbon is one of the most famous pedestrian streets in the world.

So to recap:

The most famous pedestrian street in the United States was left unprotected on NYE.

Even after a similar attack at a Christmas market in Germany, the leadership in NOLA failed to take even the most basic of protective measures.

Nothing can be more basic of a security measure than a concrete barrier, but they failed to do even that.

If someone is willing to give their life to kill a bunch of strangers, there's really nothing a free society can do about it.

Even if Bourbon had been barricaded, he would have just picked a different target. You can't physically protect pedestrians from vehicles in all cases. There's hundreds of people on the sidewalk of Canal street at all hours of the day and night. He could have easily done as much, if not more damage that way.

They said the vehicle crossed the border as well. It could have been rented in Pasadena, driven to Mexico, and driven back from Mexico.
But a post way upstream said the truck had 45 miles on it in Pasadena. Sounds to me like it was driven locally to the dealer or rental agency.

The barriers were being repaired is what I've read
This reeks of New Orleans incompetence. What needs to be repaired on a barrier? Does NO not possess other barriers that could have been deployed in the intermediary?
Even a couple of RVs blocking Bourbon street, would have stopped the attack. I am sure NOLA officials could find at least a dozen RVs owners willing to help, in exchange for a front row seat for New Years on Bourbon street.

Exactly right. If Bourbon st would have been barricaded, another street would have been found with plenty of people. You can't close an entire city off.

That is true but it is about limiting the head count. If you know there are going to be a lot of people gathered in one spot that is vulnerable it is not hard to put up barricades or a few dump trucks to prevent vehicle attacks. Much easier to prevent this style of attack vs explosives like the Boston one.

Maybe. But it's not uncommon for 50 or more people to walk in a big huddled mass to just cross Canal St. when they get the walk signal. Very real chance he could have collected a bigger body count by just going after that.

All things considered, I'm somewhat surprised the numbers are as low as they are.
