Senate is gonna have a field day marking all this up. They're going to try and force the House into a lot.

Why do some folks here want a Govt shutdown?

How does anarchy sound? Do you want us to become Pakistan or Syria?

This is as idiotic as the "defund the police" kooks who then demand the police to find their stuff.
It seems you don't know what happens when FedGov "shuts down".

It has minimal/zero impact on most people's lives. Dems will go squealing to the significantly less influential msm. There will be some manufactured sob stories. Bring it on!

So how about shutdown for ever. You support that?

Has anyone mentioned dissolving the federal gov?

That's fine. It will be abundantly clear whose fault it is that there govt is shutting down and the Republican senators can play ball come January

Am I naive to think that once a week the house has a marathon spending proposal day. Majority must be present and sponsor presents for 30 minutes.

Structural reforms in the spending legislation process like this is only way to cut or get spending under control. If you want to train Pakistanis on safe sex practices, include it in your presentation to the public.

Can you help me understand who is actually affected by this shutdown? Worst I can come up with is people will miss a couple paychecks that are guaranteed to get paid back. That's significantly better than the private sector where you can miss a few paychecks and then never get paid by that company again at any time. Sorry if I don't lose any sleep over people that don't have an emergency fund set up for these situations.

I feel worse for the people that had a vacation planned to a national park and get that ruined. They don't get back pay on their vacation time they used up.

I have friend who is a crop scientist for the USDA. The last October shutdown came at a critical time for an in-lab plant experiment. She was locked out, but did manage to sneak in and make her observations, only because the building was shared by TAMU.

That's how it should be, with every congressman on the record. Glad they are doing this. By breaking it all down into separate bills, the conservatives, that stood up, may end up being able to cut some spending after all.

While I agree, it is up to each new session of Congress to write their rules as on session cannot bind future sessions. So that would be a session by session vote for that rule, or to abandon it for that session.

According to all of the MSM (hit) pieces, the shut down is because there were 38 Republicans that voted no, they ignore the 197 Democrats that voted no.

In my book that makes this the Democratic shutdown, because you know, I CAN COUNT!

Blue star.

I prefer to think.of it as a bi-partisan shutdown.

So literally no different than getting laid off in the private sector except they will get back pay when it's over. Put me in the "shut it down" camp.

I'm sure Amazon is hiring all sorts of seasonal workers now if times are tight. Learn to code = learn to deliver.
No, not the same at all. One gets laid off because the work is no longer there. The other is locked out by politicians who refuse to don their job and threatened with disciplinary action if they do go to work.

If I was a federal worker, I would be all over finding temporary work like that. Considering they get back pay, you would end up making more money than if the government stayed running.

Unbeknownst to most, the debt ceiling was suspended in Jun of 2023. As a result, Joe Biden and congress could spend on Ukraine without worry about the debt ceiling being a hurdle. The UniParty suspended the debt ceiling with a purpose.

We don't need a CR. We need congress to do their job and pass an actual budget every year that clearly states the priorities and line items and dollars allocated by department. Everything else is theater.

I just had a visit from my childhood friend who is a lawyer and a staunch democrat. We had a brief conversation since we hadn't seen each other in a year, and then I mentioned DJT. My friend never gets rattled but always tows the democrat lines (or is it lies?). He blamed the pending government shutdown on Trump, and I reminded him that his boy, President vegetable, is the president, not Trump. Then I thanked him for acknowledging that Trump has more power out of office than Biden does in office. He decided it was time to go, and I dropped the final bomb about Biden bragging that he was the great unifier and that the only thing he built back better was his wallet...

...and away he went without comment.

My husband had a federal government job for 45 years. In that entire time he never missed work due to a shut down. His job was considered essential so he went to work as usual.

It means my in-laws and mother don't get their social security and health care benefits, it means people go without the basic essentials they have earned from decades of work. Missing a check or two and getting it "later" isn't an option for diabetics and people on fixed incomes. A shutdown impacts millions of people who have earned benefits that the government provides, and it is the elected officials job to keep the government functioning.

I've read in a couple of places that the Thursday vote was always doomed to failure, as it required a 2/3 majority rather than a simple majority.

So this vote was always going to happen? If so, Chip Roy and co. may end up being geniuses for getting the CR passed without the debt limit extension.

Also should note that the extension doesn't HAVE to be in this bill. Yes, the debt limit as a whole is suspended until Jan. 1st. But, once reimposed, we're not set to hit the ceiling until mid 2025. Plenty of time to slash unneeded government waste enough to justify a ceiling raise mid-year.

He's wrong. Social Security and health care benefits keep going out during a government shut down. Always. Also, essentional government functions continue.

Government payroll does stop, unless specifically exempted by Congress. (It should be noted that in the last shutdown, Democrats voted NO to a bill filed by Ted Cruz to pay Coast Guard personnel. Other military branches were covered.)

Essential government employees continue to work. Nonessential employees go home. EVERYONE gets back pay after-the-fact whether they kept working or not.

It is wasteful. And it is a pain in the ass. That's why NO ONE should vote against a clean, no frills CR.

It was posted that Procedurally after the 2/3 votes failed

the bill could be passed on a second vote with a simple majority but Jeffries, the Ds, and the freedom Caucus were not able to be convinced to change their vote on the Trump backed bill with the elimination of the debt ceiling

So now we're going to give the same bill as yesterday a try without the debt ceiling provision?

It will be interesting to see what happens, especially if all the Republicans vote yes...

The 38 Republican no votes will have to sign on to the Farm/Disaster funds in exchange for dropping the debt ceiling provision.
