As a gov (DoD) employee, I understand y'all's frustration. I'm also a taxpayer.

I am dedicated to my job and the mission of my organization. I don't want to be shut out of work, and I don't want "free" days off due to automatic back-pay. It's ridiculous.

But I'm just a flea on the big dog's back. It's the politicians that my frustration/anger is directed at, and I hope yours would be, too.

If I could be king for a minute, i'd put a provision in place that if the government ever shuts down, even for a second, every Representative and Senator holding office at that moment would be ineligible for re-election. Bet that would fix this problem.
I'd like to see it changed to where if the government shuts down, there is no backpay except for those employees deemed critical and required to work during the shutdown.

Why do some folks here want a Govt shutdown?

How does anarchy sound? Do you want us to become Pakistan or Syria?

This is as idiotic as the "defund the police" kooks who then demand the police to find their stuff.

Government shutdown is only "nonessential" positions who get back pay when government reopens. Unfortunately it doesn't include inessential personnel like members of Congress who should work for no pay and no backpay until they get their act together.

The stupid part is that if Congress would do their primary function, which is passing a real budget, then government shutdowns would not ever be an issue.

It seems you don't know what happens when FedGov "shuts down".

It has minimal/zero impact on most people's lives. Dems will go squealing to the significantly less influential msm. There will be some manufactured sob stories. Bring it on!

From what I've noticed, some people are just so miserable in their lives that they just want everything else to go to sheet so the "others" whom they hate will be made miserable to match their miserable lives as well. "If I can't have a happy life, no one can " mentality.

Then there are the others whose lives are so privileged that a shutdown wouldn't affect them, so to them, it's a joy to see others suffer.
There are in fact two things, science and opinion; the former begets knowledge, the later ignorance. Hippocrates

tactics.

This, plus Congress takes a 5% reduction in their office budgets. Then, a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget, with a Congressional penalty of no pay for them.or their staff.

The media is already rolling out the sob stories, I heard one this morning about a fed family that is one missed paycheck away from foreclosure. Apparently, having an emergency fund in place never occurred to them.

It means my in-laws and mother don't get their social security and health care benefits, it means people go without the basic essentials they have earned from decades of work. Missing a check or two and getting it "later" isn't an option for diabetics and people on fixed incomes. A shutdown impacts millions of people who have earned benefits that the government provides, and it is the elected officials job to keep the government functioning.

Why would a spending bill need to be passed to fund Social Security? Are you implying Social Security isn't already fully funded and the Social Security trust fund is some sort of giant Ponzi scheme!?

SS and SSI checks still get deposited (as they are part of mandatory spending). Medicare/Medicaid still provides healthcare coverage for those eligible (again, part of mandatory spending). The VAs still remain open. Where is this narrative coming from that if the federal government shuts down that all government activities stop (as one poster claimed, anarchy)?

You are correct, SS isn't impacted, however, the last Govt shutdown in 2018 caused major headaches for my father in laws health care. Bottom line is these buffoons both D and R are elected to govern, to compromise, negotiate and work together to get things done. Unfortunately, the days of Lloyd Bentsen and Phil Graham working together FOR Texas in spite of differing political parties are over. Our elected officials are more concerned with sound bites, fund raising, social media exposure, and running for reelection 24/7/365 than actually trying to get things done.

Can you help me understand who is actually affected by this shutdown? Worst I can come up with is people will miss a couple paychecks that are guaranteed to get paid back. That's significantly better than the private sector where you can miss a few paychecks and then never get paid by that company again at any time. Sorry if I don't lose any sleep over people that don't have an emergency fund set up for these situations.

I feel worse for the people that had a vacation planned to a national park and get that ruined. They don't get back pay on their vacation time they used up.

Gov't shutdowns or threats to allow a shutdown are part of the negotiations. The original bill is a steaming turd of pork barrel giveaways and needs to go down. The public was given a day to read 1500 plus pages. If Dems and establishment Rs want to keep things like $3B for a football stadium I welcome them to die on that hill.
