Trump's window dressing -

do you think Elon and Vivek want a raised debt limit? I highly doubt it - reduced debt limit would force government's hand on cutting spending which is what Trump promised,

For two years? Damn right. Why go thru this **** every 3 months for the next two years. They want time to slash government.

I will not be surprised to see Trump attack Elon at some point on Truth Social. I fully expect it. He and Elon do not see eye to eye on spending and where we are as a country. There will be some good stuff done under Trump, but we are headed for financial disaster under him.
To be fair, we've been on the brink of financial disaster for 15+ years.

Chip Roy: 61.9%
Democrat challenger: 36%

He had no primary challenger.

Good luck primarying that, Trump.

Ben Shapiro had an interesting take on this budget battle.

Essentially, Trump, Johnson and the Dems already agreed to the bill. His theory is that Trump wants all the spending passed under Dems before he takes office and would like the debt ceiling limit removed, so it's not an issue when he's President.

Kinda sounds like trump

Weird, it's almost like I said this exactly and got roasted for it.

This is the principled conservative (and responsible) position.
They will have the opportunity to pass a conservative principled budget in March. Increasing the debt ceiling isn't about making room for more debt, it's about disarming the Senate democrats and preventing them from leveraging that for political gains later.

This…

It gives Trump's administration 2 years to operate without the constant threat of Ds trying to hold "government shutdown" over his head…

On the plus side, Congress can still cut taxes in their next budget…on the negative, it will allow Trump to take on debt to fund the measures he and his administration deem necessary…

Chip Roy just said Rs are jizzing themselves for getting a bill that's shorter in pages but adds $5T to the debt.

It doesn't add $5T…but it does open up the ability for Trump to do so if he sees fit…

If you believe that DOGE is going to do its job successfully, then you have to assume that billions and billions are going to be cut in the next two years which will offset debt spending, then in the long run, this bill works…

With that said…I don't think this passes…

Would have been better if this had been the first bill put forward…

What is PayGo. Sounds like it's an accumulated scorecard of 1.7T in mandatory cuts due to other increases that's now wiped clean to 0. Meaning no more 1.7T in mandatory cuts

Also, I don't know if Biden gave every federal worker a boost to their severance like was reported he may do, but if he cuts entire departments, the outlay in years one and two will spike.

Add the border deportations to that spike, and having no debt celing for the first two years would be a help to him.

There is so much broken. But let's go ahead and have folks stand in the way of the national mandate he has.

This is going to be very common with as small a margin as there is in the House. A single rep out of line or an absolutist voting against on principle will tank the legislative agenda.
So who is outta line Trump or Chip? I'll go with Trump on this issue. Debt will kill us as the worlds foremost economy, and probably already has. We are currently paying more To service the debt than we are on defense. Its insane.

Trump is going to cut government. He ran on it and has 2 great businessmen leading that effort.

Everyone without severe TDS knows this won't happen right away. So, why shutdown the government right when he takes office? Why keep doing these over and over until he can do something?

It's grandstanding. Create chaos to try to derail actual progress for Trump to do what his mandate from the people is.
He ran on cutting the govt in 2016. What cuts did he achieve during his 1st term?

There were cuts until COVID hit. However, he admits he should have done more. DOGE is a great start. Let outsiders recommend the cuts.

He may call him a RINO, but the proper term is TDS. Standing in the way of Trump's mandate from the entire US because of his hatred of Trump.

I think in the grand scheme of things, the most prudent path for the Rs would have been to pass this bill…begrudgingly, but passing it would have put this on Schumer and the Senate…

Now Schumer has the upper hand here…

You think Chip Roy has TDS, or you think Trump thinks that?

Hopefully Trump understands that a mandate is not the same as being coronated.

Roy is not doing this because he "hates Trump". Get a clue!

Roy is doing this because he's a principal conservative! Apparently something you don't understand!

If you want to disagree with Roy's approach here, that is fine. Republicans can disagree on the best path here.

But what you can't do is completely lie about Roy's motives!

I appreciate that Chip is making a principled argument, but I think it's one that needs to wait until March…

Seems pretty clear this bill accomplished two major things…removed a ton of pork, and it gave Trump the room to maneuver his agenda through the first two years with no threat of debt ceiling hanging over his head…

I think in the long run, Chip's move was misguided…

This was not the hill to die on at this time…

lol. Then what I'd his plan for severance, massive deportation? What bill did he introduce that cuts pork, he's doing nothing but putting obstacles in the way for Trump to fix all the **** that congress passed while he was there.

He is unwilling to let Trump fix what the American People gave him a mandate to fix. Many of these things will cost more up front in order to fix and see the long term benefits.

Because he's not offered anything but "reee shut down the government".

There is never a "good time" to have debt ceiling discussions. In 2 years, you'd say "well we shouldn't do anything right before midterms". And so on. There will always be an excuse.

What is DOGE going to cut that makes the ceiling issue a moot point? Social security? Medicare? Defense? If not, we will continue to have debt ceiling votes every other year.

It can cut quite a bit that greatly slows our ascension toward it…

No, it's never going to go away…but if we want the Trump agenda executed, there may not be any other way to do it…

This is not good Trump. Chip Roy is one of my favorite people in Congress. I hope he challenges Cornyn in 2026 instead of Paxton.
