Chip Roy: 61.9%
Democrat challenger: 36%

He had no primary challenger.

Good luck primarying that, Trump.
I am 100 percent on Chip's side, but there would be a bunch of very rich Republicans who would be willing to try to primary Chip if they got Trump's endorsement. Fredericksburg is the richest city in Texas with the highest median home price.

Chip is 100% correct if…IF you believe DOGE will get nothing done…

To me, that's the disconnect…you either believe DOGE will do its job or you don't…

The reason they have been pushing DOGE is to rein in wasteful spending…

I think Chip Roy is a stud…love the guy…think he lost sight of the big picture on this one…

We will have better foreign policy under Trump. We will be better on social issues. We will be better on taxes.

Unless a miracle happens, spending in 2025-2028 will be greater than it was in 2020-2024.

DOGE is not going to have the authority or Trump's support to touch like 80% of the budget. They will help on the margins and be a nice campaign ad for Republicans.

But anyone that thinks it is the magic bullet is naive at best.

DOGE gave a blanked stamp of approval on $110B for new spending on disaster relief. I would have liked to see DOGE scrutinize that $110B to see if it's really necessary.
FireAg

The big issue isn't the $110B for disaster relief…

The issue is taking the debt ceiling away for two years…

But if you don't, you handcuff Trump from dealing with things like deportation and border protection…

We are literally in a spot where we are going to have to spend more now to make things better later…

That's the hard reality…

Does that mean we'll be in even greater debt than we are now?

How will that affect inflation (if at all)?

We'll be 40T in debt in 2 years. Annual deficits already around $2T. Interest expense is rising fast and the Fed slowed down their rate descrease. Trump needs at least $100B for deportation. His tax cuts will reduce revenue the first year like they did in 2018. Mandatory spending is only going to increase. Tariff revenue will be offset by giveaways to minimize the initial jolt.

I have little faith in doge cutting or having a plan for what matters. They'll celebrate cutting something like sec education in Pakistan.

Stock market gains taxes and reduced interest rates will reduce the debt. Only way

This is going to be very common with as small a margin as there is in the House. A single rep out of line or an absolutist voting against on principle will tank the legislative agenda.
So who is outta line Trump or Chip? I'll go with Trump on this issue. Debt will kill us as the worlds foremost economy, and probably already has. We are currently paying more To service the debt than we are on defense. Its insane.

Trump is going to cut government. He ran on it and has 2 great businessmen leading that effort.

Everyone without severe TDS knows this won't happen right away. So, why shutdown the government right when he takes office? Why keep doing these over and over until he can do something?

It's grandstanding. Create chaos to try to derail actual progress for Trump to do what his mandate from the people is.
He ran on cutting the govt in 2016. What cuts did he achieve during his 1st term?

There were cuts until COVID hit. However, he admits he should have done more. DOGE is a great start. Let outsiders recommend the cuts.
Upward trend during the Trump admin.

I understand that Chip and company don't want to take the debt ceiling away as a bargaining chip. My guess is they revise this with an adjustment on the date for the debt ceiling. But that still has to get through the Senate and reconciliation. Good luck. Might have to wait for the new Congress and worst case delays the Senate from nominations. I think this is a waste even if I understand why Roy is putting his foot down. It's also a good selling point in Texas to go against Cornyn.

Chip said DOGE can't do it alone.

The problem was the Speaker waited til the last minute to show a bill, and even one that apparently R's had not even seen.

And THEN the bill was 1150 pages of crap.

Chip is NOT the problem.

Yeah, like I said, I think this is the wrong hill to die on for Chip Roy et al…

I think it's going to cost much more to do what needs to be done to fix the immigration issue than people realize…

The other things he notes in that tweet are also a concern, but I think the big dollar elephant in the room is cleaning up and cleaning out illegal immigrants…

If by massive spending you mean tax cuts then yes. Tax cuts count as spending in the weird world of our federal govt. Also there has to be some new spending in Trump's next term.....how you gonna deport 15M illegals and finish the wall

These "stalwart conservatives" that don't want to support Trump need to be primaried. Chip Roy ( and the rest of them) are idiots. They refuse to "read the room". Do they not understand what Trump, Vivek and Elon are going to cut?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the "conservative movement" died with Rush Limbaugh.

Trump isn't a conservative. The party is morphing into a pragmatic and populist party. You will never get more than 30% of the country to vote for conservative candidates. "Conservatives " like Chip Roy, will no longer win national elections.

Common sense will win the day. No woke BS, no DEI, America First, strong borders, no foreign wars. Abortion, and other conservative lines in the sand are losing propositions. It is what is is. Adapt or die. .

Pat Buchanan is/was a conservative populist as was Reagan. Trump is a conservative populist, however, he realizes that there is far more to conservatism than simply trying to freeze spending. He wants to get his spending on the wall, defense, etc. and then take the chainsaw to some of the Dems garbage. At this point I am far more concerned with the border, defense, Ukraine handouts, trade, etc. than with shutting down the government due to spending. There is likely little that Trump will spend that I am actually against.

It's very easy. Cut spending elsewhere. There's no reason why all spending must go up, unless we are just liberals who want money spent slightly differently.

Hard to believe any one hold what one said on Jan 13, 2021 just in the wake of the absurd Jan 6th and in the midst of all that confusion, and how bad it all looked -- against him.

No, it looked terrible, and at the time he was reacting as many did. Has he acted like a Rino in 2023 and 2024?

Chip Roy a RINO??? That is not a serious take. Proud to have voted for him on multiple occasions.

The only thing that might be wrong here is that Trump wanted the breathing room and to claim this as a win. That doesn't mean it is fiscally responsible or conservative. It kind of reminds me of Rand stumping against a few things early in Trump's first term… sometimes you might need to take the less than perfect win when you can.

Yep. Just look up the The Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 which Kevin McCarthy and Biden's staffers conjured up that suspended the debt limit until January 2025. So as the tweet says there currently is no debt ceiling, but it slams down come 1/25.
