He resigned the 118th congress.

Not the 119th where he is congressman elect Gaetz

Has anyone seen if he is going to take the seat in which case the ethics report would likely be restarted and released (I assume the investigation would have to be reinitiated by the new Congress)?

If he does, he's right back in the ethics hot seat.

so then if Paxon is next, do they scream piss and moan about prior accusations that had been cleared before and kill that one too?

Probably. Hence why do that? Paxton and Gaetz are 2 of the only candidates I can think of that would be tough to get confirmed.

posted this in the other thread but:

MTG and Grassley should release all of the covered up payments and investigations. Let's have a true bonfire on the Hill. Then Trump release the Epstein lists once in office and all the evidence that goes with that.

That's why I don't think he wants the seat and why the push to keep the investigation report from being released. The fact he immediately resigned the seat when nominated definitely makes one wonder what is in the report because I see no other reason why he immediately resigned other than to try to keep the report secret.

This is DC so we know it will be leaked by someone, likely a Dem, in the near future.

I'm wondering if this was all a play by gaetz to drop out of the house without openly dropping out before the report was released

I think it more likely that this way a play by Trump and establishment Republicans to get Gaetz out of the house for good. Trump can blame other republicans while the other republicans blame Trump...meanwhile the only one that got played was Gaetz.

That's my gut feel as well. Basically washed out the ethics report and anything else that could have stuck to him.

Some real life friends/acquaintances were speculating about that. End the committee's actions, and serve as a stalking horse to piss people off and make "the real pick" more acceptable.

Seemed far-fetched to me, but maybe not.

That's exactly what it was. Cover for Gaetz to resign from the House with plausible deniability that he wasn't running from the ethics charge. Reward for the thing that Trump prizes most: loyalty.

Help me understand here….2 no votes from Rs & Trump has to make another selection?
I think you're going to see resistance build such that enough R senators privately say "there's no way I'm voting for him," and then word will be discreetly passed to the Trump team to let them know that Gaetz needs to withdraw his nomination, or if they push it forward it won't pass in the Senate. That saves Trump the embarrassment of a rejection and allows him to get another pick moving forward.

Gaetz on the other hand, has to deal with the rejection and move on. As I posted earlier, there's a bit of karma in that for him.

Just my opinion. Could be wrong. We'll see how it plays out.

In a world of the self-absorbed and self-interested, Gaetz stands out as someone who is willing to derail Republican initiatives to serve his own purpose: expunging an ethics investigation.

The results of that ethics investigation will continue and be forwarded to the Senate for review. The information the DoJ/FBI has in relation to his ties to sex trafficking will make its way to the Senate in similar fashion. He will be subject to extensive testimony and continual investigation. As he has to tell the truth, he will be in trouble from the git-go.

This appointment is the Sessions choice on steroids. But I don't believe he will ever be approved by the Senate.

I have a hunch that you are categorically wrong…

Good thing you didn't put money on that hunch.

Gaetz was DOA.

In Bondi and Blanche, we now have competent agents for real reform and change ready to take control without baggage or distraction from day one.

Can you show us something in her resume that proves Bondi is capable of delivering"real reform"?

Citizenfreepress linked the article below claiming to be the whole story behind Matt Gaetz:

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1859748387291107797.html

It's pretty convoluted, with multiple characters you will be familiar with. File it under "the truth is stranger than fiction", assuming it actually is the truth.

We need more like him. He cut McCarthy's head off. McCarthy promised individual spending bills in exchange for the support of the Freedom Caucus. He broke his promise. The Freedom Caucus took his head off. Don't lie and promise to govern conservatively just to get a leadership role. McCarthy and those like him are the ones that need to slither back to their holes. At worst, Gaetz is just a horndog.

SIAP - looked for this but didn't see it in any other threads.

Gaetz has officially announced that he will not return for the 119th:

Quote:

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said Friday he will not return to Congress after resigning his House seat last week, despite withdrawing Thursday from consideration to be President-elect Trump's attorney general but added that he is "not going anywhere."

"I'm still going to be in the fight, but it's going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress," Gaetz told conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, later adding that is a "pretty poetic time" to let Florida's 1st District have new representation.

There was a question about whether Gaetz may try to return to Congress for the 119th Congress, and whether he would want to, given the careful wording in his resignation letter last week.

But he put an end to that speculation.

"I've got other goals in life that I'm eager to pursue, my wife and my family. And so I'm going to be fighting for President Trump. I'm going to be doing whatever he asks of me, as I always have," Gaetz said. "But I think that eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress."

....

"Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere. I'm not taking off for like, you know, tropical excursion for the rest of my life. I am here to help save this country," he said Friday.

"We need a leadership structure under President Trump that's going to allow for durability of our movement and the ability to continue this great realignment of our politics. So I'll play a part in that. I plan to be a big voice," Gaetz added.
