What I’m hearing privately from a few key GOP senators: yes, they’d prefer to not have a messy fight over Gaetz. Not their favorite. But they also don’t have a lot of energy for pushing back. Trump runs the show, they say. If Gaetz can reassure them, they’re open to backing him.

We'll find out soon enough. Susie isn't going to hang around very long if Trump starts cutting her out of the process. She set her boundaries and I don't anticipate she'll back off from them.

Given that the nomination is likely DOA, this was likely done as a way to reward Gaetz for being a loyalist, and give him an excuse to resign and keep the House from releasing the report on him and subsequently have to face the firestorm on that (hence Gaetz immediately resigning his seat).
He will either be rejected by the Senate or he will be recess appointed which will give him cover for a while and allow him to keep collecting a federal paycheck for a bit longer.

With all the information coming out right now, this seems to make the most sense. Help the guy get out of his jam and then appoint someone else.
