This is the most likely answer. They aren't getting rid of Gaetz either way.

Maybe they are taking a flyer on Gaetz and it he doesn't get confirmed he can just take his seat back in January and it will be harder for them to say no to whoever is next.

Maybe next is DeSantis and Gaetz runs for Florida Governor after DeSantis is confirmed.

God, I pray so. Resigning his current term only to how up for next term in January is BS. Might be legal and Johnson will have no choice but to seat him. But such useless chaos.

Trump still needs to pull his nom though.

We shall see, but I have to believe there was a plan already in place…deals were already cut…

Maybe it was a "we will compromise on Thune, but he needs to call a recess for Gaetz to assume his role as AG without confirmation, and to make House members happy, we will back Johnson without a fight, and we will make it harder to remove speakers moving forward…"
