Talking about New York. Three months minimum until a special election could be held and counted. More close to four to five months. So if the 100 day agenda is essentially gone for anything other than EOs and a budget bill and reconcilation process in May being down a few GOP members?
Those months being shorthanded for votes when the real work begins in the legislature is the concern.

In New York the rule is the special election has to be called within 10 days of a resignation and an election has to be held within 80 days following that. 90 days max. Without a primary the risk could be multiple Republicans trying to run and no one coalescing around a single candidate. We'll have to be careful to run one person and make them qualified, even though this is a gerrymandered very red district.

Only 20 of the 53 will be up for re-election in 2026. The rest will either be running in 2028 when Trump is leaving office, or will still be there when he's out of office.

A pick like this just seems so unnecessary. Plenty of qualified bulldogs out there wiyh MAGA cred who would have skated through confirmation. No reason to waste political capital or get into a bunch of infighting over these picks.

I suppose if his confirmation gets blocked he can jump back in. The timeline for a Florida replacement race is murky. Expected that DeSantis will act quickly but unlike NY, IIRC Florida law requires a primary.
They may try to appoint him in recess if he doesn't have the votes. The first recess is usually in late March. A long time for a position to be vacant.
