major Russian missile strike on Ukrainian infrastructure. Will be very interesting to see if there is an Ukrianian response on like kind Russian assets.

Typical Russian MO. Ukraine attacks military targets and Russia attacks civilian targets in response. As usual, Russian government and military is trash.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Ex-Soviet Osa SHORAD vehicles adapted to fire air-to-air missiles, creating a "fire and forget" air defense capability and tapping a much larger stockpile of missiles.

Ukraine ramps up production of the upgraded Neptune-

https://www.rfuplus.com/articles/insider-annual-long-neptune-game-changer-for-ukraines-defense-strategy

Since the beginning of the war in 2022, various reports have indicated that the Neptune missile has undergone updates and enhancements to transform it into a ground-to-ground missile, improving its range, payload, and guidance and navigation systems. This new version has informally been dubbed the "Long Neptune" as Ukraine confirmed a series of successful strikes on Russian territory along 2024. These strikes, attributed to the Long Neptune, include targets such as a fuel depot and a Shahed drone storage facility in the Krasnodar region and an S-400 anti-aircraft battery in Tarkhankut Cape, Crimea, among others.

The Long Neptune has an increased range from 300 kilometers to 400 kilometers and its payload has increased from 150 kilograms to 350, significantly increasing its destructive power. The improved guidance systems now incorporate modern satellite and inertial positioning technologies, improving its navigation and targeting capabilities, and making them less vulnerable to Russian electronic countermeasures. Initially designed to be launched from a ground vehicle, work is underway to develop an air-launched variant as well, capable of being launched from fighter-bombers such as the Su-24.

Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the revamped R-360 Neptune is now in mass production, with 100 units to be manufactured by the end of 2024 and an order for 3,000 missiles placed for 2025.

Bashar al-Assad's fall points to a direct lesson: Russia's growing weakness.

"Vladimir Putin's Russia now resembles the Soviet Union in the 1970s. While it is still assertive and interventionist abroad, its economy at home is increasingly weak and distorted by its conversion into a wartime operation. But just as the external expansionism and internal mobilization could not mask Soviet decay forever, so today Putin's bravado should not scare us. Think about it: If Russia were winning in Ukraine, would Putin threaten to use nuclear weapons?"

I think it was Ambrose who told the story of a captured Korean during WWII. He had been conscripted by the Japanese, then captured by the Russians, captured again by the Nazis, conscripted, then captured by the Allies. May have a few details wrong...

This is going to sound like a totally bul**** story made up under the influence of alcohol but I'll share it anyway.

I have a friend who's father was a Bulgarian that left the Bulgarian Orthodox seminary to join the Bulgarian army before the outbreak of WW II. He spoke English, German, Russian, and Greek. When the Nazis invaded, he was conscripted as a translator in the Wehrmacht and sent to the eastern front. When the Nazis began to retreat west, he was captured by the Red Army and conscripted as a translator. In the confusion at the end of the war in 1945, he manged to shed his uniform and "surrender" to Britiah forces. The post-war Soviet bloc government in Bulgaria declared him an enemy of the state in absentia and sentenced him to death. He married a Polish girl and they migrated to Vietnam from where they applied for residency in the US on the basis of an invitation to work for Werner Von Braun at Redstone. The whole family sailed from Vietnam to Melbourne, FL and arrives one day before the State Department visa offer expired. My friend grew up in Huntsville among the old German rocket scientists in the 1960s. I would be suspicious of the whole story if his name was not on the founder's plaque at the space museum.

Sounds like the Ukrainians have been getting a little training from the Mossad. All that is missing is cell phones blowing balls to jelly.

Drones carrying drones.

"The Ukrainian Navy (VMS ZSU) recently revealed a completely new type of USV which adds several previously unseen features. This new design, as yet unnamed in public, adds small aerial drones, and possibly mines, to the capabilities of USVs. And it has already proven them in action."

Every war has something about it that accelerates weapons development (and subsequently countermeasures) that changes how wars are fought to some degree.

Clearly Ukraine has accelerated the development and use of drones and UAVs to a degree and at a speed that I can't immediately recall having seen in prior wars. It's truly remarkable and has to have planners at the Pentagon and elsewhere racing to catch up.

Pentagon update on Russian advances.

"Though Ukraine is losing ground in the east, especially around the key logistical hub of Pokrovsk, it would take several years before Russia could capture the entire Donetsk region based on the current pace of the conflict, a senior military official told The War Zone Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, Ukraine can hold its Kursk salient for at least the next few months despite increasing Russian pressure and the influx of North Korean special operations troops who are starting to take heavy casualties there, the official said."

Second such shipment. Russia is struggling to provide enough guns domestically.

"The M1989 "Koksan" is a long-range self-propelled artillery piece developed in the 1980s. Its western designation references the year of its first public appearance. Known for its range and firepower, the M1989 is a weapon system designed for heavy bombardment and strategic artillery roles."

Yeah they have a decent range and they're self propelled but even firing in bridgade strength is going to be difficult if they're reload time really is 5 minutes. As soon as that starts falling if there are any fire finder radar around you're going to get swarmed by drones PDQ. And to my knowledge the NORKs don't have any kind of specialized anti-HARM artillery ammunition. So in a heavy attack those are going to get 3 to 4 rounds off prior to getting swarmed. Dangerous tool but I don't know how much they'll change things on the ground.

In addition to fearing the subversive effect of a free, democratic and prosperous Ukraine on his doorstep, Putin's other motivation to invade is straightforward robbery.

Scroll to the maps. "Will Trump let Putin get Ukraine's $26 trillion in gas and minerals?"
