Ukraine: Day Three
"Project Leaflet and I were invited by Task Force 31 to observe some training with a unit that had just formed. Made of mostly untrained volunteers, and a few veterans of the eastern front, I was eager to speak with them.
I pulled a man aside during the training, Nazar. A rather tall, handsome looking guy - literally a male model and actor before the war. I spoke with him about his experiences in the trenches, and what it was like to go to war for the first time.
He described to me how horrifically loud trench warfare can be. He told me how terrifying attacks by Russian soldiers can be because of the extremely dense enemy fire. He told me about how a Russian tank shot and missed him by 5 meters. After our interview, I walked back toward the group of soldiers with Nazar.
He spoke to me about how he feels like he never left the trenches. How at night clubs, he feels the vibrations of the music and it sends him straight back. A man I could tell who was deeply affected by the war. He told me, "The war will never leave you."
Just a few moments later, the unit received news that their training schedule was to be shortened by a great deal. An uncomfortable, dangerous amount. Nazar looked at me, and I looked at him. He was going back into what he described to me as, "Hell made by human hands." He said to me, "We will go anyway."
The level of bravery I witness daily here is something extraordinary humbling and something I won't ever forget. Soon after, Atlas handed out generous donations of cold weather gear. Gear which would soon, very soon, keep these men warm in the trenches.

"I don't know what they (Russians) were actually doing. We know that they have great issues with communication and we were advancing rapidly. They seemed to have been retreating not knowing that we were there and we did not fire at them - at that moment we already had our PKT (MG) jammed and so was our cannon. You could not see on the video from when the fighting first started, but we fired our machine guns and grenades and then the problems started.
When they drove past us, it was hard to believe it ourselves. We didn't fire at them cause our whole tank gun was jammed and so was our rusted grenade launchers at the front of the tank. So I rolled back a bit and gave the signal to the infantry to work on the enemy vehicles.
The first car that drove by didn't have people in it, just the driver and he waved at us with his hands cause he thought we were allies. They did not understand we were Ukrainians, and then suddenly we obliterated them. Destroyed them and left. In moments like these, they do not surrender.
Emotions in this situation are ones that you never experience before. In those five minutes you just don't understand and are in surprise that you could have died so many times and lived. In battle I did not process this. I see that the ammo box ignited in front of me, how the tank was hit - fragments, bullets - but after I was seeing that the cover (MG) was hit, I also saw that a bullet hit 10cm from the box with grenades that was on rear of the tank. The emotions… surprise that you are alive. That you are happy. Happy to be alive. Happy for your loved ones, for your country. That you can continue fighting."

It looks like a minor thing, and in terms of land it is. But from a Russian perspective it's a big problem. They now have to shift their already overstretched forces to address a new front, small as it is. They also have to shift forces to protect other coasts under their control

Amphibious operations can have a strategic effect above their weight. If I was less disciplined about the use of the word strategic than is my wont, I'd say they're inherently strategic like the air lubbers do about airpower. (But I don't like that phrase.)

Also, the Black Sea Fleet could attack the beachhead from behind, or least bottle it up. But by doing so, it will expose itself to shore-based missile fire. Horns of a dilemma.

this forces russia to prioritize crimea over its efforts in the east (which aren't going well) and the south (which are entirely defensive at this point). perhaps ukraine can cause another collapse in those conditions.
