I think Russia takes the southeast by tomorrow or so, and is then strategical positioned to move on multiple fronts.

That said, the best outcome in the interest of the US now would be a long, drawn out war/insurgency that drains Russia.
It seems unlikely they can securely consolidate any of the areas they have "taken". Going to be a meat grinder in their rear.
Yes it is and that is where we pass out javelins, Nlaws, land mines, and Stingers like candy. Fill this place up with deadly man portable, relatively concealable, hard hitting weapons.

If they're operating from the port cities, the north border, and the east separatist areas, there is no rear though. They can fight a war for a decade from those positions.

When they move in from there though - totally agree they may not be able to hold the territory and could deal with a long resistance.

It doesn't seem like Russia is doing much flying over there anyway.

Read a report that out of over 300 stingers fired by the Ukes, 280 or so have hit their targets.

I heard the former nato commander speaking yesterday about a "humanitarian" no fly zone.

I'm not sure how that'd work, but if he is talking about it, the current nato command probably is too.

I don't think this will happen, thank God. No Fly zones are supported by vermin like Kinzinger who are unaware of the history as to how they have been used to escalate conflicts.

Saw elsewhere that they committed <100 total airframes to the initial invasion. Legitimately still one of the biggest headscratchers to me and the only thing that makes sense to me at this point is that they simply can't operate that many at once.

Is it true that Russiki tanks blow their top turret off when they get struck/hit with projectiles?

I read that tanks of Russian design are prone to "cooking off" (see countless youtube videos of tanks cooking off in Syria). I also read that western designed tanks are not as prone to cooking off due to the design of the compartments used to store ammunition.

Also, the turret popping of is apparently called the "jack-in-the-box effect."

Yes. I think most tanks do when a thing akin to a sabo round penetrates the hull; the Javelins pop down from above and basically when the expansive energy of the warhead/heat sets off the ammo inside...bodies are vaporized and the turret blasts away. There's really no point in designing it to not pop off at that level of destruction anyway.

Javelins maybe, not stingers. That would have decimated the Russian Air Force. Decimated in the literal sense.

All tanks will. FYI turrets get pulled all the time for maintenance.

You knew to the thread? Russia has nukes. Putin is crazy. That's the answer, even if it stinks.

Some on here refuse to accept that reality.
I don't think it is that anybody refuses to accept that as a risk, but people are rightfully saying there has to be some limit to how weak you let that threat make you. Having a nuke can't simply be a limitless get out of jail free card for any nation that has them and has the broadest territorial ambitions. There has to be a point where simply the fact that a madman has access to nukes means it is worth fighting the madman and making him lose so that his own people take away his control over the nukes.

But there is a limit that seems to be completely ignored by some of you. That limit is being a NATO country + Sweden + Finland. That is the red line (so far) like it or not. Putin knows he can't touch those countries without getting the entire west involved and getting his ass kicked. It's ludicrous to think Putin is going to conventionally run roughshod wherever he wants to just because he invaded Ukraine.

Until he steps foot in a NATO country, the west is not going to give him any reason to use nukes while letting him ground to a halt and expend all his resources in non-NATO buffer states. We don't have to like that reality but that's the reality right now.

Could that stance change? Yes. But that's why we are doing what we are doing.

I'll be honest, weaponizing contracts with private companies or people seems like a bad plan.

It's up to the Russian people to stop this at this point. Apply pressure anywhere and everywhere. I don't think Russians will go as easily into despair as Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, and N. Korea have.

I don't think people realize how brainwashed the common people of Russia are. Imagine if the only news available to you was NBC and CNN.

The Russian people believe they are being treated unfairly by the west for a war against corrupt government thugs holding the Ukrainian people hostage. If anything worsening conditions is going to make them more fanatical in support of their country, not overthrow it.

I'm fully aware. Been to Russia a couple times and used to make 4-6 trips/yr to China. You might be surprised by how much people there actually know and see along with their desires to GTFO of Russia. Their loyalty to their older still living family members seems to be what keeps them there.

Tough call. Risk the entire country or

If it was the US and someone wanted Washington State and Oregon and a sizable population of those two states wanted to go or else the enemy was going to roll Dallas and Houston. I'd consider an offer then I would arm to the teeth and take them back later.

The Ukraine should have never let Clinton talk them out of their post Soviet nukes.

They faced a potential invasion by Hitler, imminently, which they would have struggled to defeat, which Putin at present does not pose to them. At least, from what little I have read, that is really the issue. The EU/all of their neighbors are financially sanctioning/cutting Putin off also, which was a bit different when the Axis was briefly running the continent.

Well said. Also, a lot of folks would be surprised at the common view among older Russians that The Ukraine is the "front porch" of Russia. It's not based on ethnic superiority or racism or "evil expansionism" or "brainwashing." It's based on historical reality and Russian patriotism. It's a viewpoint worth keeping in mind when we see reactions that make no sense to us as Americans.

This is a calculated statement just like the "putting all the nuclear units on high alert" statement was.

He wants to push the buttons of the west to get a reaction.

Remember that Belarusian tac map. Maybe Belarus gets the western half of Ukraine down to Odessa.
