Guessing this had to be Galati along the Ukrainian border. No way the Russians are dumb enough to do this on purpose.

Good. Wasn't posting it for the throwaway US comment, but for the fact that Europe continues to nut up a bit and not cave to intimidation.

Well this is quite the stance…

Quote:

"Shut up. This is just the beginning": Medvedev threatens Europe with new strikes after a Russian drone hit a residential building in Romania

Following the crash of a Russian drone into a residential building in the Romanian city of Galati, Dmitry Medvedev launched a new wave of aggressive threats against the EU.

The Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council called EU countries "participants in the war" against Russia and warned that similar incidents on European territory "will continue."

In a vulgar tirade, Medvedev wrote that Europeans should "shut up" and that citizens of EU states "will not be able to sleep peacefully," especially in areas where drones for Ukraine are produced.

He concluded with:

"This is just the beginning!"

Ukraine is the world leader in the development and production of UAVs and USVs, and is poised to also produce tens of thousands of UGVs this year.

"These efforts are being closely watched. Five years into an existential fight, Ukraine has become a global leader in ground drone technology. Kyiv is deploying these systems at a scale and pace that even the most advanced militaries can't come close to keeping up with."

It sucks, but given Russian mine deployment with utter disregard (and at times purposeful targeting) for civilians since day 1, I can't bag on Ukraine. Have you seen the sheer number of PFM-1s Russia spreads in populated areas, for example? Not sure what you do about it other than put yourself at a disadvantage by not deploying any anti-personnel mines at all.

Unless I am mistaken, isn't the highway targeted by these the one that Russia just announced would be off-limits to civilian traffic to allow more military transports to use it?

Correct. It's part of the R-280 "Novorossiya".

I took a trip through Google Maps today, and you can see many cities in satellite mode that are still rubble. Bakhmut, Siverskodonetsk (formerly Sievierodonetsk (**** Russia)), and Chasiv Yar, and more towns are completely blown through. Russia has been building over the ruins of Mariupol, but you can still see ruined structures.

**** Russia. May Putin get ****ed in hell for eternity once he goes there.

Tochnyi mapped how Ukraine systematically dismantled Russian logistics in occupied territory, from HIMARS forcing depot dispersal in 2022, to FPV drones creating a 35 km kill zone, to middle-strike drones now hunting convoys 150 km deep.

130 Russian logistics vehicles hit in May alone. Commands are now banning large convoys. Ammo depots pulled back over 100 km from the front. Every extra 50 km of supply route cuts convoy capacity by 33%.

Kerch ferry crossings nearly paralyzed. Mariupol and Berdyansk ports reduced to minimum. Key rail routes like Donetsk-Yasynuvata shut down by direct strikes on trains.

Russia is trying to build an "Azov Ring" via highways R-280, E58 and E105, but key nodes remain vulnerable, especially supply lines to Crimea via Chonhar and Armyansk.

All this death and destruction just to make Ukraine a vassal state of Russia once again.

"Nearly half a million Russian soldiers have been killed in Ukraine since 2022, a death toll exceeding total American losses in World War II, the head of Britain's top intelligence agency said Wednesday, relaying one of the highest fatality figures any Western government has put on Russia's war in Ukraine yet. Russia is now losing roughly 1,000 troops a day in killed and wounded along the front, according to Ukraine's General Staff."

This is unsustainable for Russia. It's time to start planning the endgame, for Ukraine.

Respectfully disagree. Plan away but this war continues IMO. Putin's only play is war because he can't survive peace. Putin wouldn't last 6 months if he settles for anything less than unconditional control of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk (Donbas), Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and a buffer zone near Kharkiv and Sumy.

Ukraine's only play is battlefield leverage for favorable peace terms - but then, Putin won't negotiate. And regardless of Ukraine's recent drone success, there's little evidence Ukraine can retake/hold their lost territories.

Sadly IMO, this war likely continues for another year ... or until Putin is replaced.

More and more it appears Putin's actions are focused on regime survival, rather than on conquering Ukraine.

He is "a leader with clear visibility who simply has no viable exit, for whom the war's continuation is not a strategy but a default, the least bad option in a situation where stopping creates problems he doesn't know how to solve."

"If Russia is no longer fighting to win, the war's end, whether through military exhaustion or a negotiated settlement, won't reveal an adversary returning to normalcy. It will reveal a system that used the war to complete a (domestic security) transformation it couldn't have accomplished in peacetime and is now prepared, in ways it wasn't in 2022, to survive what that transformation produces.

Whether that outcome was designed or defaulted into, the structural result is the same."
