I doubt it. I think in the beginning she was a means of escape for him from his life of 'duty', while at the same time bringing attention to himself. He also seems a bit mentally fragile, allowing him to easily buy in to her victim complex. People like her start to believe their own lies after awhile making it their 'reality'.
