This is epically horrible, and yet it sounds like the authorities don't have many options. Its a triage situation. One can only hope in some ways they do get compensated. That's the other side of such a regime--they can certainly do it. But nothing makes up much for such loss. This is just heartbreaking stuff to read.

China is basically suffering right now from rains what Chiang-Kai shek deliberately inflicted on millions in 1938 just to interfere with a Japanese Army advance. He ordered the d ykes in the whole region involved blown up.
Wait, you are blaming Chiang Kai Shek for this? Confused.
I think he was saying the flooding is much like what Chiang Kai Shek did intentionally.

That guy's gone. I wonder if he was waiting for a rescue that didn't come or if he was checking things out for some reason and just got caught.

Water level is currently 158m. 16-17 meters below top of dam. Inflow isn't currently reported, but outflow shown to be 38,000 m^3/sec.

Now a typhoon!

"It was the first time in at least 70 years that water had reached the foot of the Leshan Giant Buddha, a 71-meter (233-foot) -tall statue carved into the side of a mountain in the eighth century."

Not over yet by a long shot. It will be interesting to see what happens along the lower Yangtze as this massive new rainflow works its way east........

I feel for all the innocent people killed in China, but until they overthrow their government I can't really be that upset. They allowed their government to cause these kinds of disasters without recourse because of shoddy building and engineering practices and poor environmental planning.

And would finish China's economic viability on the world stage for a decade or more. Might be why they are allowing Wuhan to party like it's the end of the world?

the news is pretty silent, but says they are flowing 40000 cms from the dam, infilling at 70000, and the level is already at 168 m out of 175 top.... so there could be some serious issues. At best, i expect they'll have to open all gates which supposedly means flowing 60000... which sucks for everyone. at worst there could be an overtop or even failure, which i doubt but who knows.

The CCP is keeping a tight lid on reporting, with emphasis on how it supposedly has everything under control.

Even under the best case outcome, there is far more damage done than they will ever admit.

It seems to me this damn is doing what it was designed to do. They are still controlling the outflow but, with the level of flooding they've had, there is only so much that can be done. Under more ideal conditions, they would reduce their outflow to prevent flooding downstream but it's reached the point they have to open up the gates and let the chips fall where they may. Still, they are much better off than if they had no control at all.

Googled up the numbers, apparently the normal flow from the Mississippi is <17,000 CMS, so we're talking 4.5x the Mighty Miss.

Although, it can't touch the Amazon, at 209,000 CMS.

Quote:

Before the completion of the Three Gorges Dam, water volume in the Yangtze was about 529,000 cubic feet (15,000 cubic meters) at the end of the Three Gorges region and up to 1,100,000 cubic feet (31,100 cubic meters) at its mouth, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica. These numbers have decreased somewhat due to the dam. The suspended sediment load (sediment that is carried in the water flow and never quite settles on the bottom) at the mouth of the river is about 478 million tons a year one of the highest sediment loads of any river on earth.

If it happened here, and the Dems had the executive, and both Houses, the Dems would have to up their game of propaganda quite a bit to feed the newsies 24 hour BS to placate Americans down stream they aren't going to drown.

As long as our resident Lefties weren't going to be the ones being flooded, they'd be here backing the government big time.

Three Gorges is performing as designed to prevent a flood surge, but reservoirs and flood zones upstream of it are at storage capacity so this new typhoon volume must be inevitably passed to Three Gorges, which is near capacity itself. The questions are whether Three Gorges will hold--it should--and, as you say, how much additional damage will be done downstream as it releases even more water.

Calculated 76000 cubic meters/sec to be 1.5 cubic miles of water flowing every day.

I took a riverboat down the Yangtze and thru the Three Gorges as the dam was starting construction. While we were at dinner one evening, a body floated toes-up past the large viewing window. Animated conversation ensued.

The question for me is whether the dam can hold up if it ends up going over the top. I'm not enough of an engineer to run calculations but it would seem that the lateral force at the very top is going to increase dramatically even with a few meters of water running over the top.

It won't go over the top of the damn. They should have a spillway off to the side so, if the level gets high enough, it will spill over, uncontrolled. It will spill over (uncontrolled) until the level drops back down below the spillway level. It should never go over the top of the damn.

While I am not an engineer so have no background but what if smaller dams upstream fail and it's a wall of water coming down?

That would be bad just because of the massive inflow it would create.

I hope that wall would spread out inside the reservoir behind the damn such that by the time it reached the damn it wouldn't be a "wall" anymore but more like a large wave only a few feet high. Still could be bad even then depending on how much pressure is already on the damn.
