Water level is currently 158m. 16-17 meters below top of dam. Inflow isn't currently reported, but outflow shown to be 38,000 m^3/sec.

I feel for all the innocent people killed in China, but until they overthrow their government I can't really be that upset. They allowed their government to cause these kinds of disasters without recourse because of shoddy building and engineering practices and poor environmental planning.

the news is pretty silent, but says they are flowing 40000 cms from the dam, infilling at 70000, and the level is already at 168 m out of 175 top.... so there could be some serious issues. At best, i expect they'll have to open all gates which supposedly means flowing 60000... which sucks for everyone. at worst there could be an overtop or even failure, which i doubt but who knows.

It seems to me this damn is doing what it was designed to do. They are still controlling the outflow but, with the level of flooding they've had, there is only so much that can be done. Under more ideal conditions, they would reduce their outflow to prevent flooding downstream but it's reached the point they have to open up the gates and let the chips fall where they may. Still, they are much better off than if they had no control at all.

Three Gorges is performing as designed to prevent a flood surge, but reservoirs and flood zones upstream of it are at storage capacity so this new typhoon volume must be inevitably passed to Three Gorges, which is near capacity itself. I took a riverboat down the Yangtze and thru the Three Gorges as the dam was starting construction. While we were at dinner one evening, a body floated toes-up past the large viewing window. The question for me is whether the dam can hold up if it ends up going over the top. I'm not enough of an engineer to run calculations but it would seem that the lateral force at the very top is going to increase dramatically even with a few meters of water running over the top.
It won't go over the top of the damn. They should have a spillway off to the side so, if the level gets high enough, it will spill over, uncontrolled. It will spill over (uncontrolled) until the level drops back down below the spillway level. It should never go over the top of the damn.American Hardwood said:

I hope that wall would spread out inside the reservoir behind the damn such that by the time it reached the damn it wouldn't be a "wall" anymore but more like a large wave only a few feet high. Still could be bad even then depending on how much pressure is already on the damn.
