UPD is being ordered to keep at a distance from the protesters. They should have intervened last time and didn't. If you want a more active law enforcement agency that has authority to separate the two groups you need the state troopers to show up

Not true at all. My best friend works at UPD. As with any police department, their number one goal is to protect people and the rights of people, which includes their own officers. Property comes second. UPD is under staffed and under funded. If a mob comes for Sully and they don't have enough officers to defend him, they aren't going to let their officers get seriously hurt for property. Sure, they can call surrounding agencies and DPS for help if there is advanced notice of an event, but when these protests are a regular thing, who is gonna pay for all those officers? UPD can't pay their own officers a competitive salary, they sure can't afford to pay overtime rates to have 50+ police standing by just in case the mob goes after Sully on a regular basis. If they have the staffing and are able to prevent people from pulling down Sully, they will. They haven't been told to stand down, just to not get themselves injured when there is no threat to people.

Like I said, who is paying for all those officers overtime rates? Gotta figure at least $50 per hour per officer, probably at least 5 or 6 hours. You're looking at well over $10,000 to pay 50 officers (could require more, or less officers) to stand by just in case the mob makes a move. That's not including manpower to plan and set up an event like that. Unless the university is gonna foot the bill to protect Sully, which we know won't happen, UPD cannot afford to keep doing this. I've said it several times already, UPD is already under staffed and under funded. For comparison, Alabama and LSU, with a lot fewer students, have police departments nearly twice the size of UPD.

Apparently he has nothing to fear from administration for his remarks. I've emailed President Young often and among other things expressed concern that he ( Young) is being disingenuous concerning his non action. I asked him if any school officials have even spoken with this student.
If his assistant gives my correspondence a cursory glance before deleting I would be shocked, but may kick it around a minute for comedic fodder.
